Obama Extends Oil Drilling Ban 7 Years

From an elated New York Times:

U.S. Halts Plan to Drill in Eastern Gulf

By JOHN M. BRODER and CLIFFORD KRAUSS
December 1, 2010

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration announced on Wednesday that it had rescinded its decision to expand offshore oil exploration into the eastern Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic Coast because of weaknesses in federal regulation revealed by the BP oil spill.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said that a moratorium on drilling would be in force in those areas for at least seven years, until stronger safety and environmental standards were in place. The move puts off limits millions of acres of the Outer Continental Shelf that hold potentially billions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas.

The eastern Gulf will only be off limits for the US. Cuba and the rest of the world will have free rein.

The decision essentially reverses the much-disputed drilling plan announced in March, which would have initiated environmental studies and exploration activity in previously untouched areas off the Gulf Coast of Florida and along the East Coast from Florida to Delaware.

Remember how Mr. Obama was hailed for this ‘bipartisan’ deal on off shore oil drilling? Remember all the nuclear power plants he was going to give loans and permits to?

Lies, all lies. Like so much else from this administration.

“As a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, we learned a number of lessons,” Mr. Salazar said in an afternoon briefing, “most importantly that we need to proceed with caution and focus on creating a more stringent regulatory regime.” ..

Which is more or less a description of the Obama administration. Of course it is trying to destroy the US oil industry.

Other potential drilling sites in the Arctic will be studied before any leasing decisions are made for 2012-2017, Mr. Salazar said

So the Arctic, that is Alaska, is also off limits.

The government estimates that the eastern gulf contains 3.7 billion barrels of oil and 21.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, while the Atlantic coast has 3.8 billion barrels of oil and 37 trillion cubic feet of gas. Taken together, that is roughly comparable to Norway’s proven oil reserves and Canada’s proven gas reserves

That’s okay. We don’t need that oil. Let the rest of the world soil their hands with it.

We will run our economy on Mr. Obama’s pixie dust.

    STOP BEING SURPRISED!

This is what lawyers DO! Stop voting for lawyers!
    1. They love LONG drawn out discussions.
    2. They love to present evidence, pick apart evidence.
    3. The love the battle, the fire, the debate, the haggling.
    4. They love micro-managing everything so that you have NO CHOICE but to get your lawyer to argue about every bit of minutia of every day life.
    5. They love control, and they love having you take it from them, if you can, then they like the game of retaking it back.

It’s a very enjoyable game to them. They don’t make anything, run a business etc, it’s all
about control, and keeping it from you. –That is how you can explain the stupidity of this administration…..lawyers screwing around with your lives.

Oh but OUR lawyer, we voted for, is not a scumbag, it’s the other guy’s lawyer—no dummies, they are ALL sh*tbags! This is what you get: Obama, Biden, Clinton, Holder….lawyer-state people.

Very salient point, Mith. One that I mentioned sometime last year which didn’t get much notice. However, I’m very much in agreement with you that elected people who are lawyers actually feel most “productive” by arguing. That is their comfort zone, their safe area when they feel they are actually important. It’s also a false pulpit for them since the ends justify the means and they cannot see it for the folly that it really is. “The Art” they love dabbling in merely serves to tick off those who cannot express themselves in legalese. And in the end, they have felt they have “accomplished” much for “all the effort they expended” to make it happen. To them work=talk. And it’s even greater “work” because of the specialized art of bullshitting in lawyer-speak. Yet they never take into account the fact that for the last four years they have been preaching to the choir and only re-affirming to each other with knowing head-bobs that they are all of the same mind anyhow, thus achieving nothing and swaying the opinion of no one.

The proof of that is in the craptacular legislation they have passed and shoved down the throat of a very dissatisfied nation and calling it “landmark”. It’s landmark alright, just as the landfills and the slums and crime-infested areas are “landmarks”.

I often said they get their rocks off by simply blabbering to the media and to each other for the opportunity to demonstrate their “superior intellect” which, to me, most often ends up an occasion for them to talk down to the masses from their high horse. No more, no less.

It won’t last 7 years because Obama and his ilk will be out of office in two more years.

This is all very disappointing. But do we still have the western Gulf?
