Obama Gives LGBT Protections — Law Already Provides

It hasn’t been all golf and gala luncheons for Obama. He has managed to throw yet another symbolic sop to some of his major donors and bundlers.

From a cheering Associated Press:

Obama gives protection to gay, transgender workers

By NEDRA PICKLER | July 21, 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Monday gave employment protection to gay and transgender workers in the federal government and its contracting agencies, after being convinced by advocates of what he called the "irrefutable rightness of your cause."

"America’s federal contracts should not subsidize discrimination against the American people," Obama said at a signing ceremony from the White House East Room. He said it is unacceptable that being gay is still a firing offense in most places in the United States…

Of course, nobody can ever cite an example of anyone being fired because of being a homosexual. But that doesn’t matter.

Obama also amended an order signed by President Richard Nixon in 1969 to prevent discrimination against federal workers based on race, religion, gender, nationality, age or disability. President Bill Clinton added sexual orientation, and Obama will include gender identity in a change that will immediately take effect.

In other words, discrimination based on sexual orientation was already against the law. But, as we said, Obama needed to do something symbolic for the heavy donors in the ‘gay community’ with the midterms coming up.

From the Daily Caller:

Obama’s LGBT Executive Order Threatens Religious Liberty, Say Advocates

By Kate Patrick | July 21, 2014

Unwilling to wait for Congress to pass the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, Obama signed an executive order Monday prohibiting organizations with federal contracts from discriminating against employees who identify themselves as gay, lesbian, or transgender.

For religious freedom advocates, that could pose a major problem. Obama’s order does not provide an exemption for religious organizations, whereas the ENDA bill before Congress does.

Carmen Fowler LaBerge — president of the Presbyterian Layman Committee… who defines herself as pro-traditional marriage, believes Obama’s executive order for LGBT non-discrimination will actually discriminate against religious organizations with federal contracts…

“I’m going to assume that the president signed what he signed in order to prevent ENDA from passing with religious exemption, because then the two would be in direct conflict,” LaBerge told TheDC…

Is there any doubt? Obama and his donor pals in the gay community won’t tolerate any exemption for religious belief. That would be blasphemy.

One Response to “Obama Gives LGBT Protections — Law Already Provides”

  1. I have never seen in any part of the Constitution which states .. equal access and treatment before the Law except for Blacks, Gays, etc.

Show me that wording and then we’ll talk.
