Obama Greets ‘Counterpart’ Hugo Chavez

From a delighted Reuters:

U.S. President Barack Obama greets his Venezuela counterpart Hugo Chavez before the opening ceremony of the 5th Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain April 17, 2009.

This is a bit more than a simple handshake, is it not?

Mr. Obama is Mr. Chavez’s “counterpart” all right.

From China’s news service, Xinhua:

Obama, Chavez exchanges greetings before Americas summit opens

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, April 17 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Barack Obama and his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez exchanged greetings with smile outside the venue of the Fifth Summit of the Americas here Friday.

Pictures and TV footage issued by the summit’s organizing committee showed that Obama and Chavez shook hands and exchanged greetings with very relaxed smile minutes before the opening ceremony of the summit on Friday evening.

Reports here said that Obama offered greetings in Spanish, while the Venezuelan president replied in English

Ah, yes, that sophisticated multi-lingual Mr. Obama.

Both commies, they should hit it off well. Maybe they can both add each other to their Blackberries too.

Yo! S’up ma brutha. What be up in da V-waila?

Honestly, the black stick makes me want to wretch, eat it so I can wretch again. It’s that sickening.

His little act is just beyond the beyonds.

One has to keep mulling over the words:

Section 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.

    It CAN happen here.

But through us, four generations will remember.

  5. jobeth says:

That’s quite a “handshake”. Wonder if they hung in the same “hood”.
They seem a bit too friendly for me…but what do I know, I’m only a right wing extremist who loves her country.

    Today, Chavez, tomorrow…the Castro Brothers,…then……

  6. Colonel1961 says:

Hold on! Chavez is shorter – how come he’s not bowing to him?

    from Dictionary.com
    Colluding – 1. to act together through a secret understanding, especially with evil or harmful intent;
    2. to conspire in a fraud.

    The picture says it all.

  8. canary says:

Notice Obama’s seductive clasp and winding fingers, wrapped around a hand thats fingers are pulling away, repulsed, trying to escape the intimate gesture.
Only the seducer uses his other hand to aid in drawing it’s prey closer to his beating heart.
Notice Obama’s demure face, half-closed eye-lids, persed lips, showing immense pleasure and satisfaction. He’s never displayed such affection in public, not even with his wife. One more country to laugh at America’s King Obomi.
add a little music for perfection

  9. Celina says:

This is disgusting. My FIL lives there and the man can only afford to call his son once or twice a year. A man who has almost never been unemployed who is in his mid-50’s. Not some shiftless layabout.

  10. heykev says:

I’m sure they have a lot to talk about since they have so much in common. Both are committed communists after all.

  11. ChePibe says:

Speaking as someone who has lived in three South American countries for just under two and a half years (mostly Argentina, thus the nickname), but never Venezuela:

The handshake displayed is quite common in Argentina, Chile and Peru. It is generally considered less formal, but does not necessarily indicate a particularly friendly relationship.

Shaking hands and generally “saludando” is a big deal in Latin cultures generally and Latin America in particular. Shaking hands like this often occurs in two phases – a “normal” handshake at first followed immediately by the “thumb shake” of sorts seen here. Occasionally, however, the “thumb shake” precedes the normal handshake.

In any case, it looks like Obama wasn’t expecting a handshake of this form, and I can’t blame him – it’s quite informal, and certainly not something done between heads of state. Chavez likely did it for two reasons, a) to show he’s “one of the people” and not so stuck up as to shake hands normally and b) to show thinly veiled disrespect to Obama.

Of course, the bigger question is why on earth Obama’s meeting and shaking hands with the louse in any case.

    • canary says:

oh. Thank you for the latin lesson. I see that handshake done in the US all the time. Saw another picture, Obama is smiling with teeth showing, and Obama’s has the handholding gesture smack against his heart. Chavez’s arm is stretched outreached, refusing to inch in closer, while Obama is pulling on him. Chavez looks pretty red in the face in that pic too. Course since Chavez called Obama ignorant and weak, prehaps he was totally, taken off guard with the genuine warmth Obama showered him with. Maybe Obama thought he was suppose to kiss Chavez on the cheek. Forgot which country leader that is.

All those reporters there yet not a one heard the exchange, we only have “reports” to go on?

Yeah OK, duuuhhh….., something smells to high heaven here and it sure as hell isn’t BO’s new puppy-hide shoes. ;o)

I’m surprised Barry didn’t speak Venezuelan. Isn’t that what they speak there like they speak Austrian in Austria?

Send OSoros to Venezuala. It’s already a banana republic.

  20. canary says:

Saw a 3rd photo. Obama would not let go of Chavez’s hand even when he turned to face the podium. Chavez face was more red faced and startled with disbelief, by this unwanted intimacy. I think Obama was doing his ole create a smoke-screen method. We get it okay. The world loves Obomi.

But this photo of Chevez and Mahmoud Ahmadineha just BLOWS the top off any affection towards our prissy Pres Obmama. Mahmouds killing of young men is just for a smokescreen. Chevez smile is genuine in this pic

I love it… A leader who’s genuinely capable of intelligent, informed dialouge with other world leaders…And check this out folks…He didn’t stumble on any of his easily pronounced words, or left anyone (capable of critical thought) in the US reeling with embarrassment..

Very glad I voted for him and I can’t wait to do it again….

  22. proreason says:

Powerline reports and has a picture of Chavez handing OSoros a copy of “a book by a Uruguyan leftist named Eduardo Galeano: The book’s title translates as The Open Veins of Latin America; the subtitle is Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent.

It’s the second article down at the moment.

He has no problem with bowing to a guy, or playing finger puppets with some dude; but can’t quite kiss the beautiful French First lady… I’m still thinking a little gay.

    • canary says:

In no way am I bashing gay’s, but there is something about him. And Cuba has always had the largest male gay population. Obama appears to be smitten. but, Chavez is already taken by Iran’s Mamahmoud
