Obama Has Smaller Fallback Reform Plan

From the Wall Street Journal:

Obama Readies a Fallback Health-Care Proposal

Scaled-Down Plan Would Expand Insurance to About Half as Many People as Pending Bill Envisions

FEBRUARY 24, 2010

President Barack Obama will use a bipartisan summit Thursday to push for sweeping health-care legislation, but if that fails to generate enough support the White House has prepared the outlines of a more modest plan.

His leading alternate approach would provide health insurance to perhaps 15 million Americans, about half what the comprehensive bill would cover, according to two people familiar with the planning.

It would do that by requiring insurance companies to allow people up to 26 years old to stay on their parents’ health plans, and by modestly expanding two federal-state health programs, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, one person said. The cost to the federal government would be about one-fourth the price tag for the broader effort, which the White House has said would cost about $950 billion over 10 years

That is to say, they are just going to expand SCHIP and Medicaid. (Which we have always said were just the stalking horses for full-blown national socialized medicine.)

But what does any of this have to do with Mr. Obama’s original reasons for calling for reform? He has always insisted that we needed to lower medical costs and to make sure all Americans would get coverage.

But this fallback plan does meet these two goals. But, of course, neither does his ‘big plan.’ And neither do either of the bills before Congress.

It should be painfully obvious now that it simply does not matter what is in this ‘healthcare reform’ bill. The important thing for Mr. Obama is to get the camel’s nose under the tent.

The rest, such as the public option and every other leftwing desire, can (and surely will) come later.

Which is why it’s so dangerous having McCain in that damned meeting. He’s a sucker for “compromise”.

J.D.Hayworth is watching every move McCain makes at this “Dog & Pony Show”. Go ahead Progressives, use the Reconciliation process. By going this route the Progressive/Democratic Party will become extinct after 2010. Mark my words.

Expanding medicaid is just going to drive the states in the poor house, quicker and more deeply than before. Of course, if this happens there will be just that many more goverment toadies to supervise the expanded role. That will probably be chalked up as more “jobs saved/created” under obama stimulus 2/health care reform/takeover.
