Kilmeny: I remember my dad telling stories about - as you said - the real great depression, and one was his father's prohibition of taking any kind of Government assistance. He told my dad 'We'll eat rat turd sandwiches before anyone gives me a penny.' Glad to see folks with the same courage of their convictions as my grandfather had. A hell of a man and a great (first generation) American. Cheers to you!

Oh, I know what you're saying, proreason. There's probably a lot I'd do that I hated, just to keep the kids taken care of. However, being blessed (or cursed, say some) with one of those hardheaded temperaments that cause long suffering people such as my parents to say "Why do you always do everything the hard way?!", I prefer to sink or swim, all by myself, because once you sip the Kool Aid it gets harder and harder to say no.

Kilmeny, you might enjoy some of the things Gov Mark Sanders of South Carolina has been saying lately.

http://hotair.com/archives/2009/02/09/video-mark-sanford-on-the-new-savior-based-economy/

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/11/17/sanford-dont-bail-me-out-bro/

The reason I bring it up is that although Gov Sanders is adamently opposed to this Depression Stimulus, he also will NOT say that he will turn down money for his state from it. INMO, there is no inconsistency in that. Like him, I'm opposed to government hand-outs, but if I qualify for one, by golly, I'm gonna take it. I've paid in more than my share, and if I don't get something out, then it will just go to some deadbeat.

As you have described your situation, I think you should go get your share (i.e., health insurance, help with utility bills). It doesn't obligate you to lick The Moron's boots, and I know you won't.

Dear Mr. President:

I just happen to be in one of those demographics that you profess to be so worried about taking care of. A single, unemployed mother, with no health insurance, and while I don't have a mortgage I can default on (sorry about that!) I do have quite a stiff little property tax bill every six months. Without a solid work history behind me, I can only find employment in the service-style industries, all of which are currently cutting back to save money. This being winter in New England and all, I've been paying over $600 a month for heating oil, $300 a month for electricity, and a few hundred dollars per for a man to plow my driveway and shovel snow off a leaky roof that badly needs replacing. I am behind in my oldest daughters' school tuition payments, and my savings are running out.

My problem is this: The government won't leave me alone.

I don't want your help, basically. I don't really need it, much as I appreciate the sentiment you attribute to your impulses to hand me money. It's mighty generous of you to give it to me, seeing as how some of it is mine anyway, but it's not necessary. You're interfering with my right to choose the way I want to live.

I am a single mother not because I decided it might be fun to have a few babies, but by the choices of both me and their father. I decided on my own to hold off getting a health care policy, figuring that for now it was a better option to pay for visits myself. My home has been in the family for a few hundred years; I live in it because I love it and well, if it occasionally needs a new roof or maybe new plumbing, those are the breaks in life. And if it takes my kids out of a basically useless local school system, I will flip burgers to the end of time to pay for their private, more rigorous school.

All I ask, Mr. Pres., is that you quit taking my own money to pay for programs that are supposed to benefit me that I never wanted in the first place. I would rather live in an unheated apartment in the middle of winter while earning $15 a week, as my grandparents did during the <i>real</i> Great Depression, than have you hand me a check and pat me on the head as if I was incapable of taking care of myself, thank you very much. You know where to put that $500.

I feel as though I've fallen down the rabbit hole. Do I drink this Kool-Aide or is it that Kool-Aide to get smaller, I don't remember now. I am fortunate to have a relatively recession-proof job and my only child is grown and gone although we do support my mother-in-law and my mother. My 401K like everyone else's is in the crapper and our savings our pretty low but I can't complain. I'm just afraid that something bad (actually worse) is going to happen and not only will my wife and I go down but take our mothers with us, that scares and pisses me off at the same time. I thought Clinton was bad because you could tell he was in love with being president but didn't really want the responsibility that went with the job but Obamy doesn't even want the job, he just wanted to win. He's so damned proud to tell everyone "I won you know, I won cause you know, uh, ah that I you know won! So nanny, nanny to you." I've known 12 year olds who were more mature. I'd like to give him some change he could believe in.

I know this has been mentioned, but it needs to be said again: people were actually allowed to count unemployment checks as qualifying income for these so-called loans! I miss the old days when being unemployed meant 'wait until you get your ducks in a row before asking for a mortgage.' Silly me...

Our 401K had an early withdrawal penalty something around 10%. I should have taken it all out last year, because by leaving it in, I now paid a penalty of 62%. That leaves me with the ability to sustain myself for six months at best, and since the stimulus package wont be creating anything resembling jobs, and there will be no tax relief, I have about three months left before I will not be able to pay my mortgage.

Every job opening in my area, even run of the mill journeyman positions instantly attracts over 200 applicants, all very much younger than myself, and willing to work for literally any wage offered, and because of that, my 40 plus years of experience is tacitly ignored because I am "too old" in their eyes to do the job anymore, because the jobs expect one to work double shifts, with no overtime, and zero benefits...and people are taking them. I am in a world of shit, yet since I am a white, male boomer past my prime, and I dont have my union card or my democrat voter registration card, I flat do not qualify for anything from anybody.

Even MacDonalds has a waiting list of over three thousand applications this year alone, and trust me, nobody is quitting, and everyone who is employed and being taken advantage of by employers knows that there are hundreds of people who would be all to happy to see them go. Thus, the employment prospects here are zero. As it is in the rest of the nation...via jobsites and craigslist....there is nothing out there in my line of work. Where is the financial assistance for people like me?

I'll tell you where. Studying global warming, or rewarding ACORN for tilting the election, and paying back unions and other organizers....billions and billions of dollars going to people who arent going to lose their houses, but who kissed the right asses to remain in power. I dont qualify for a damn thing....unless I get arrested for a crime. Then I dont need a house, or insurance, or anything...the Government will give it to me for free!

Same goes for my wife, who suffers from Lupus....her medicine costs over 1500 dollars a month. Her employer changed insurance providers again...now we have a 3000 dollar deductible to contend with...so where will she be in three months? She doesnt qualify for any assistance either....so yeah, I got a real hard sob story for Obama, except I dont fit his idea of a toe the line socialist democrat, my demographic isnt on the "help scale", and I am pretty much screwed.

And Obamy is showing up in my area today to tell us all how we must "endeavor to percevere" and find some job, any job to pay for his stimulus giveaway.. Ok, end of sob story....I have been in worse situations before, and I will get myself out of this one......but I wanted to share what Obama is hoping his voter base will share....and watch and see.

People like me will never be used as an example of the contrived economic meltdown, and this pie in the sky "recovery" that will give no relief to the people who need it, but reward those who smooched the proper tubes to get it. I am sick of all of the bullshit....I need relief Mr President. Why dont you look at me when you talk? Oh, yeah, people like me dont exist in your utopian world. I am a freakin dinosaur. I actually want to work.

The problem with these morons is that they are too hip for the rest of the world. They think that you can twitter, blackberry and web site your way through problems. Cute slogans, bumper stickers, sloppy wet rhetoric - like that rediculous "volunteer" site he's pushing on television ads. Like nobody ever volunteered before obama thought it up -
They really think that this kind of thing is going to fix something. It's classic liberal form over function so they can pat themselves on the back and drink another glass of merlot and sniff at how superior they are to the same people that are stupid enough to whine on their idiot web site.

I am so angry now about all this stuff I can't even see straight. For the first time in my life I'm sorry to be an American...ok - not really, but I am pretty pissed off.

I don't really have a sob story to share - although my 401k has been severely damaged because of irresponsible people who bit off more mortgage then they could pay back - who is going to bail me out?

Barry will access the O'bots at anytime to push his "agenda"::

"President-elect Barack Obama announced the formation of a new group known as "Organizing for America" that aims to continue the grassroots advocacy that the former Illinois Senator began in his presidential campaign.

"As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead," Obama said in a video message e-mailed to supporters (and reporters) this morning. "That's why I'm asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities."

"It's clear that Obama recognizes the power that his email list, which boasts more than 13 million names, represents in American politics and is working to ensure it stays within the control of a small group who are charged with protecting the Obama brand."

Submit your sob stories of crisis? What is this some sick joke from the Obama camp? It's called life. It happens non-stop and it's not fair, but then again life was never fair to begin with. And yet there are many who accept this simple fact and press on, enjoying what successes come their way. While I accept that circumstances do arise that are beyond a persons' control, most actions are the result of either good or bad choices on an individuals part. If you make a bad decision it isn't Uncle Sam's nor the population's responsibility to bail you out. The old saying is true, 'A lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on mine.' If you fail to plan you can count on failing. It's that simple.
