Obama Knew About ISIS Since 2012, But Refused To Act

From McClatchy News, of all places:

US and Islamic State: ‘We did see this coming’

By Jonathan S. Landay | July 24, 2014

WASHINGTON — Like the rest of the world, the U.S. government appeared to have been taken aback last month when Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, fell to an offensive by jihadis of the Islamic State that triggered the collapse of five Iraqi army divisions and carried the extremists to the threshold of Baghdad. A review of the record shows, however, that the Obama administration wasn’t surprised at all.

In congressional testimony as far back as November, U.S. diplomats and intelligence officials made clear that the United States had been closely tracking the al Qaida spinoff since 2012, when it enlarged its operations from Iraq to civil war-torn Syria, seized an oil-rich province there and signed up thousands of foreign fighters who’d infiltrated Syria through NATO ally Turkey.

The testimony, which received little news media attention at the time, also showed that Obama administration officials were well aware of the group’s declared intention to turn its Syrian sanctuary into a springboard from which it would send men and materiel back into Iraq and unleash waves of suicide bombings there. And they knew that the Iraqi security forces couldn’t handle it…

Lest we forget, back in 2012 Mr. Obama was campaigning on how he had Al Qaeda on the run. So, naturally, he had to pretend this Al Qaeda off-shoot did not exist.

The testimony raises an obvious question: If the Obama administration had such early warning of the Islamic State’s ambitions, why, nearly two months after the fall of Mosul, is it still assessing what steps, if any, to take to halt the advance of Islamist extremists who threaten U.S. allies in the region and have vowed to attack Americans?

That is not a hard question. Obama wants to see the democracy that Bush created in Iraq fail. He wants to make sure no good comes from the War In Iraq.

In fresh testimony before Congress this week, McGurk revealed that the administration knew three days in advance that the attack on Mosul was coming…

And he still refused to do anything to help Iraq.

“This was a very clear case in which the U.S. knew what was going on but followed a policy of deliberate neglect,” said Vali Nasr, the dean of Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and a former State Department adviser on the Middle East…

"Neglect" is being far too kind. The administration is practically co-conspirators with ISIS.

In fact, The Hill has an article about these requests:

Royce: US ignored calls to strike ISIS for months

By Kristina Wong | 07/23/14

The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs panel Wednesday blasted the Obama administration for failing to act quickly against a Sunni extremist group, saying it had ignored Iraqi calls for drone strikes since last summer.

During a hearing on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) said the administration knew six months ago that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS or ISIL) had established armed camps, staging areas and training grounds in Iraq’s western desert and its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was threatening to attack the U.S.

"However, what the Administration did not say was that the Iraqi government had been urgently requesting drone strikes against ISIS camps since August 2013," Royce continued. "These repeated requests, unfortunately, were turned down,” he said. “I added my voice for drone strikes as ISIS convoys raced across the desert.” …

And, of course, Obama is still ignoring Iraq’s requests.

From the Agence France Presse:

US still mulling Iraq request for militant drone strikes

July 24, 2014

WASHINGTON: Washington is still weighing Iraq’s request to launch air strikes against Islamic militants, but is working to boost the Iraqi army as it battles the extremists, a top US diplomat said Wednesday. After spending billions of dollars on building up and training the Iraq military, the United States was shocked when the Iraqi army melted away in face of a sweeping offensive in June by the jihadist Islamic State (IS) and allied Sunni groups…

Obama has his priorities. And saving Iraq is not one of them.
