Obama Lectures Us On The Threats To Our Rights

From an irony proof Associated Press:

Obama balances threats against Americans’ rights

By LARA JAKES and JULIE PACE | May 24, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — Forecasting the changing nature of threats against the U.S. for years to come, President Barack Obama says "America is at a crossroads." And so, too, is his presidency’s counterterrorism policy, which has long struggled to balance protecting the nation from terror attacks while upholding Americans’ rights.

And here we were thinking Obama was the biggest threat to Americans’ rights. (Such as the right to freedom of the press, religion, speech, assembly, to bear arms…)

The Obama administration this week acknowledged that four Americans have been killed — three of whom were not specifically targeted — in secretive overseas drone strikes against al-Qaida extremists since 2009…

And never mind the right to due process.

And in a wide-ranging speech Thursday, Obama warned that Americans must be vigilant against increasing homegrown threats from within, including from fellow citizens like the surviving suspect in last month’s Boston Marathon bombing…

Maybe they should be called ‘imported threats,’ rather than homegrown. Which makes you wonder why the government keeps importing so many ‘refugees’ from Muslim countries.

It is an awkward position for the president, a constitutional lawyer, who took office pledging to undo policies that infringed on Americans’ civil liberties and hurt the U.S. image around the world.

Instead, he defended on Thursday his continued and expanded use of the spy drones, which have killed thousands of terror suspects and civilians, in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. He hinted in the speech that he would give law enforcement officials new authority to seize suspicious communications within the United States.

On top of his aforementioned onslaught against the freedom of the press, the freedom of religion, speech, assembly, the freedom to bear arms.

And Obama defiantly promised to push forward with his longtime goal of closing the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where 166 terror suspects are being held — but said it’s largely up to a resistant Congress to get it done…

Obama’s sole goal is to give the terrorists in Gitmo the right to civilian trials. That is, he wants to expand the rights of the enemies of our country, enemy combatants, while limiting the rights of our citizens.

"In the years to come, we will have to keep working hard to strike the appropriate balance between our need for security and preserving those freedoms that make us who we are," he said…

Sure, we need balance when it comes to national security. But if Obama’s re-election hangs in the balance, then any and all freedoms can be infringed.

But of course this speech was nothing but a sideshow, anyway. Its solely purpose was to distract us from his scandals. And his handlers thought a speech on terrorism would play well, since his handling of terrorism still polls well, for some odd reason.

Meanwhile, we have this sideshow of a sideshow, from Reuters:

Obama in heated exchanges with Code Pink anti-war protester

By Roberta Rampton | May 23, 2013

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The woman who interrupted President Barack Obama’s speech on counterterrorism policy on Thursday is well-known around Washington as a perennial protester on national security issues.

And yet she is let into a non-public event. Some might say it is ironic that Obama was giving a speech on security but he couldn’t even secure the room. But that would be a mistake.

This was clearly staged to make it seem like there is tremendous ‘grassroots’ opposition to Gitmo. When in reality keeping the terrorists there is is wildly popular with the US public.

Medea Benjamin, a founder of anti-war women’s group Code Pink, began demonstrating years ago on Capitol Hill, becoming an almost routine presence at hearings where high-ranking officials of the Bush administration appeared to talk about the Iraq war.

She is a routine presence because the Democrats use her, just like Obama used her here. To pretend that they are being pushed from the left. Her partner and co-founder of Code Pink is Jodi Foster, who is a major donor and bundler for Obama.

On Thursday, Benjamin got into an argument with Obama, interrupting his remarks at the National Defense University repeatedly to urge him to take faster action in releasing detainees from the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"You are our commander in chief. Close Guantanamo Bay!" Benjamin shouted toward the end of Obama’s address.

"Why don’t you sit down and I will tell you exactly what I’m going to do?" Obama replied. "Let me finish my sentence.["]

If this had not been staged staged, she would have been removed at this point. But she was allowed to stay and to continue.

He called on Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers and went on to discuss other steps toward closing the prison. He said he was lifting a moratorium on detainee transfers to Yemen.

"Release them today!" Benjamin shouted. "It’s been 11 years!" "Let me finish," Obama said. "This is part of free speech. You being able to speak, but also me listening, and me being able to speak."

He was able to continue for a bit but then Benjamin demanded to know why a teenager had been killed by a U.S. drone.

"Can you tell the Muslim people their lives are as precious are our lives? Can you take the drones out of the hands of the CIA? Can you stop the signature strikes?"

By this point, the Secret Service was leading her away…

Obama then drew hoots of laughter when he announced he was about to go off script. "The words of that woman are worth paying attention to," he said.

"Obviously I do not agree with much of what she said, and obviously she wasn’t listening to me in much of what I said. But these are tough issues," Obama said.

QED.

By the way, Code Pink, which, again, was co-founded by one of Obama’s top five bundlers, is both a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4).
