Obama: McCain In The Pocket Of Big Oil

From Obama’s high minded, post politics campaign and ABC News:

New Obama Ad. McCain “In the Pocket of Big Oil”

August 04, 2008

Jake Tapper

As Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., kicks off a week focused on energy, his campaign will on Monday begin running a new TV ad that attacks Sen. John McCain as “in the pocket of big oil.”

“Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets,” the narrator says as the screen reads: “$143 Billion in Profits Over the Last Year.”

As the ad cuts to a photo of McCain, the narrator says: “Now Big Oil’s filling John McCain’s campaign with $2 million in contributions,” citing the Center for Responsive Politics. “Because instead of taxing their windfall profits to help drivers, McCain wants to give them another $4 billion in tax breaks.”

This claim, cited on screen as the handiwork of the liberal Center for American Progress, is an apparent reference to McCain’s proposal to cut corporate taxes — for all companies, not just oil companies — from 35 percent to 25 percent.

As the camera pulls back from the photo of McCain to reveal him standing with President Bush, the narrator says, “After one president in the pocket of big oil, we can’t afford another. Barack Obama: A windfall profits tax on big oil to give families a thousand dollar rebate. A president who’ll stand up for you.”

“I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message,” says the candidate.

UPDATE: McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds writes to say, “Barack Obama’s latest negative attack ad shows his celebrity is matched only by his hypocrisy, after all it was Senator Obama, not John McCain, who voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill that was a sweetheart deal for oil companies. Also not mentioned is the $400,000 from big oil contributors that Barack Obama has already pocketed in this election.”

Of course our watchdog media will be up in arms about this negative ad, just like they were about McCain’s ad calling Obama a “celebrity.”

Any minute now.

Am I the only one wondering why we keep getting “rebates” on taxes? Wouldn’t it be more efficient, not to mention more effective, just to lower taxes in the first place?

Or am I expecting too much sense from politicians?

Exxon Posts Record $32.36 Billion Tax Payment

According to CNN, Exxon Mobil once again reported the largest quarterly profit in U.S. history Thursday, posting net income of $11.68 billion on revenue of $138 billion in the second quarter.
That profit works out to $1,485.55 a second.

]Buried in the story we also find that “In addition to making hefty profits, Exxon also had a hefty tax bill. Worldwide, the company paid $10.5 billion in income taxes in the second quarter, $9.5 billion in sales taxes, and over $12 billion in what it called ‘other taxes.’”

MP: In other words, Exxon Mobil paid (or at least collected) $32.361 billion in taxes in the second quarter, which works out to $4,114 in taxes per second. Another way to look at it - Exxon paid (or collected) almost $3 in taxes ($32.361 billion) for every $1 in profits ($11.68 billion)…

The Magic Popolo is again relying on the ignorance of the masses to spread this word. Too bad Obama many of us are literate and others can write the words we read. The WSJ has an article saying big oil is not the largest of the profiteers.Chemicals profits 12.7%.Computers profit 13.7%.Pharmacueticals 18.4%.Beverages and tobacco 19.1%.Obama campaign spreading BS 100%. So let us take from the largest profiteer. Obama
