Obama Misses Deadline On $100M Cuts

From the Wall Street Journal:

Remember Obama’s Promise to Cut $100 Million in 90 Days?

Jonathan Weisman reports on the White House.

July 20, 2009

Three months ago, when President Barack Obama announced he was extracting $100 million in spending cuts from his cabinet secretaries, the reviews were not terribly kind, not with a budget well in excess of $3 trillion and a budget deficit shooting toward $1.8 trillion.

But the president had a deadline to keep: “As part of his commitment to go line by line through the budget to cut spending and reform government he will challenge his cabinet to cut a collective 100 million dollars in the next 90 days,” the White House fact sheet proclaimed.

Well, on this, the 91st day, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki and White House budget office spokesman Ken Baer released identical statements when queried about the results. “The recommendations have been gathered by the Cabinet Secretary who will be reporting them to the President shortly,” they said in separate responses. When pressed, Psaki said we should see the exact cuts “in the coming days.”

With Democrats blanching at tax increases to pay for national health care, and the deficit officially over $1 trillion, Obama may want to put a few extra zeros on the total.

Note that this article is four days old.

Being the fair-minded folk that we are, we thought we would hold off on posting this until the White House had its “coming days” to put out a report.

But four days later, there is still no report.

Moreover, at the same time back in April Mr. Obama made another dramatic pledge:

"In the coming weeks, I will be announcing the elimination of dozens of government programs shown to be wasteful or ineffective," he said. "In this effort, there will be no sacred cows and no pet projects. All across America, families are making hard choices, and it’s time their government did the same."

Many weeks have passed and we have yet to hear about the elimination of any government programs – let alone dozens of them.

And yet this from the same Mr. Obama who was just lecturing us on the importance of keeping deadlines.

(Despite having missed his own mid-summer budget deadline, and Guantanamo report deadline…)

It’s almost as if his words have no meaning.

    tsk tsk tsk

    All you naysayers.

The facts are that he DID “challenge his cabinet” in the promised timeframe.

But they didn’t perform up to his expectations.

Bush must have misrepresented how tough it would be to change government.

Luckily we have a reformer as POTUS who issues a lot of challenges and makes a lot of promises.

That’s absurd. He cut the Iraq war. He cut Gitmo. He cut the F-22. He cut the nonexistent CIA program to kill Al Qaeda. He cut GM and Chrysler. Those are just a few of the wasteful programs he’s cut so far.

oh couldn’t even make back pocket change .000000003 of the deficit.

Sorry i’m late on this, i hope readers of this article pass it around the web, it’s very necessary that we expose this liar for who he really is. I’m a democrat and i know many of you are not but i think we share a common goal, and that is to get america to see who this fraud really is. First i voted for Hillary (yes, i know many of you probably don’t like her, but at least she had experience and knew what the heck she was talking about) and then i voted and campaigned for john mccain. Showbama is the worst thing that could have happened to us right now. Personally i want him to resign, but at very least he needs to go down as the worst president of all time so we don’t ever elect another empty suit like him again.
