Obama Offers $1.3B To ‘Latino Farmers’

From an elated Associated Press:

AP source: USDA offers discrimination settlement

By BEN EVANS (AP) – May 25, 2010

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Tuesday offered $1.3 billion to settle complaints from female and Latino farmers who say they faced discrimination from the Agriculture Department.

The proposal comes as Congress is poised to approve a $1.25 billion settlement with African-American farmers in a similar discrimination case. The agency also is negotiating with Native American farmers over another lawsuit.

Notice that the “female and Latino farmers” payoff had to be $50 million more than that for the black farmers. So apparently at least the combination of female and Latino trump blacks as a ‘minority.’

Details of the latest offer were provided to The Associated Press by a Justice Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the settlement has not been finalized.

Goodness knows, the US taxpayer should not be allowed to hear about Mr. Obama’s largess before it is a done deal.

The Latino and female farmers, whose lawsuits were filed a decade ago, have sought a larger settlement, and Stephen Hill, an attorney representing Latinos, suggested the cases remain far from being resolved.

Under the proposal, the government would reach out to farming communities to make women and Latinos aware of the settlement. Successful claimants could get a maximum of $50,000, but the awards could be lower depending on how many people win claims…

Yes, the government has to let these poor victims know they were discriminated against.

Thousands of minorities and women say local USDA offices for years denied them loans and other assistance that routinely went to whites.

Sure they did. Dividing $1,300,000,000 by $50,000 (the estimated payout per head given below) means that at least 26,000 female and Latino farmers were ‘discriminated’ against.

According to most estimates, there are at most 2 million farms in the US. Just how many female and Latino farmers are there in the US, let alone how many have applied to the USDA for loans?

Besides, the last time we checked, the US Department Of Agriculture was a government agency. When have you ever heard of a government agency discriminating against blacks, women, Latinos or Indians Native Americans? Isn’t the opposite to be more likely the case?

But, if it can happen at the USDA, who is to say it won’t happen when the government runs healthcare? Will we be talking about billions of dollars for settlements in healthcare discrimination a few years from now? Of course we will.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has emphasized resolving the cases and closing what he calls a "sordid" chapter in the agency’s history.

"We have made significant progress on addressing USDA’s civil rights record and look forward to providing substantial relief to Hispanic and women farmers in an expedited manner," Vilsack said in a statement.

Meaning, they hope to pay this group off as well, before the all important mid-term elections. After all, $50,000 a vote is pretty cheap by DNC standards.

Along with the black farmers case, Congress currently is considering a $3.4 billion settlement reached by the Obama administration with Native Americans over lands trust funds mismanaged by the Interior Department.

Naturally. They vote, too.

And, after all, it’s only taxpayers’ money.

Wow! Killing two birds with one stone. Redistribution of wealth and securing a voting block.

or more accurately, “it’s only evil white capitalist taxpayers’ money.”

Well, I can see the problem. Looking at the photo…she’s out there working in the heat in that darn black outfit. Goodness….that’ll cause heatstroke right there. I can tell she’s already not right because of the lack of ears of corn in her arms. All she has are stalks and husks. “El maiz, el maiz!!!” Maybe she misunderstood.
