Obama: Paint USA Purple – With SEIU!

From candidate Obama’s remarks to the SEIU in Nevada on January 15, 2008:

Senator Obama & SEIU Nevada Members

[Our transcription:]

Obama: … All of you deserve our thanks, but you know, words are cheap.

Crowd: Yeah!

Obama: Everybody — there is not a candidate, a Presidential candidate, a Gubernatorial candidate, a Congressional candidate who won’t tell you that they’re pro-union when they’re looking for their endorsements.

Crowd: That’s right.

Obama: They’ll all say "We love SEIU." But the question you gotta ask yourself is: Do they have it in their gut? Do they have a track record of standing alongside you on picket lines? Do they have a track record of going after the companies that aren’t letting you organize? Do they have a track record of voting the right way, but also helping you organize to build more and more power? And some of you know, I come from an organizing background so I know

Crowd: Wooooo!

Obama: I’ve been working with SEIU before I was elected to anything. I was a community organizer, at SEIU. Local 880 and myself, we organized to make sure that homecare workers had basic rights, I organized –- we organized voter registration drives. That’s how we built political power on the south side of Chicago. I kept on doing it in Illinois, and now the time has come for us to do it all across this country. We’re going to paint Nevada purple and we’re going to paint the nation purple with SEIU.

Crowd: Woooo! Yeah!

Obama: So, let me just close by saying this: You know, when I started this campaign, folks said it couldn’t be done.

Crowd: Huh.

Obama: Just like, when you started organizing, a lot of folks said you guys couldn’t get organized.

Crowd: That’s right.

Obama: But we have defied the odds. Because we understand that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they are given a chance, when they are organized, when they are together and unified, nobody can stop ordinary folk. Nobody can stop the American people. And if you believe in this campaign –

Crowd: I believe.

Obama: If you believe in the capacity for change, then there is nothing that we cannot do. We will get the Employee Free Choice Act passed, so that everyone [unintelligible]. We will have a Department of Labor that actually believes in labor. We will have a President who doesn’t choke over the word ‘union’ or when you say "unionization." We are going to create a health care system that works for every American so that everybody has coverage and the providers, the people who provide care are decently compensated and have good working conditions. That is our obligation and that is what I’m going to be fighting for when I am President of the United States of America.

Crowd: Woooo!

Obama: But just remember this, I can’t do this by myself. Change in America does not happen from the top down. It happens from the bottom up.

[This is from another video clip of this same event, but is not in this one: I would not be a United States Senator, had it not been for the support of your brothers and sisters in Illinois. They supported me early. They supported me often. I've got my purple windbreaker from my campaign in 2004.]

And so, we’ve just got, what, four more days? Four more days, four more days of knocking on some doors.

Crowd: We do it.  Victory!

Obama: Four more days of working the precinct.

Crowd: We do it.

Obama: Four more days of making sure all your co-workers are caucusing. Four more days and Nevada can stand up and say "We are not going to settle for what the cynics tell us we have to accept. We are going to get out there and show America that the time for change has come." SEIU, I am glad you’re with me. Let’s together change the country. (Leading crowd in chanting) S-E-I-U, S-E-I-U, S-E-I-U … Thank you, SEIU. I love you guys!

Now we know why his lips are so purple. And what he is talking about when he talks about ‘turning the country purple.’ And why he wears a purple tie.

It has nothing to do with promoting the bi-partisanship blending of red and blue. And, as we have said all along, it never did.
