Obama Praises Karzai, Karzai Suspends US Talks

From the BBC:

Obama praises Karzai’s ‘courageous’ Taliban peace talks decision

18 June 2013

US President Barack Obama has commended Afghanistan’s President Karzai for his "courageous" decision to engage in talks with the Taliban, in a bid to end the conflict in his country.

The US has also confirmed it will participate in direct peace talks with Taliban representatives.

In reality we have been involved in talks with the Taliban for some time now, on and off. And giving them money. But how can we negotiate with the Taliban, anyway? They know we are leaving Afghanistan next year. All they have to do is wait us out.

Speaking at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland, Mr Obama said he did not expect the process to be "easy or quick", but that "we must pursue it in parallel with our military approach." …

These ‘peace talks’ are just window-dressing as we run for the exit. Or what the Obama administration calls ‘optics.’ Which are usually optical illusions.

From the Associated Press:

Karzai suspends talks with US over Taliban move

June 19, 2013

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Afghan president on Wednesday suspended talks with the United States on a new security deal to protest the way his government was being left out of initial peace negotiations with the Taliban meant to find ways to end the nearly 12-year war.

How could they be "left out," when Mr. Obama just praised Karzai for his courageous participation? (What are we paying him for, anyway?)

The move by Hamid Karzai could derail the peace process even before it has begun.

In a terse statement from his office, Karzai said negotiations with the U.S. on what American and coalition security forces will remain in the country after 2014 have been put on hold.

The statement followed an announcement Tuesday by the U.S. and the Taliban that they would pursue bilateral talks in Qatar before the Afghan government was brought in.

"In view of the contradiction between acts and the statements made by the United States of America in regard to the peace process, the Afghan government suspended the negotiations, currently underway in Kabul between Afghan and U.S. delegations on the bilateral security agreement," Karzai’s statement said…

Isn’t it odd how the AP neglects to mention Mr. Obama’s fulsome praise of Karzai? And his ignorance of the fact that Karzai opposed this move.

Meanwhile, we have this ‘on the ground’ report, from the Associated Press:

Afghan Taliban say they killed 4 US troops

By AMIR SHAH | June 19, 2013

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban claimed responsibility Wednesday for an attack in Afghanistan that killed four American troops just hours after the insurgent group announced it would hold talks with the U.S. on finding a political solution to ending the nearly 12-year war in the country.

Actions speak louder than words.

The deadly attack underscores the challenges ahead in trying to end the violence roiling Afghanistan through peace negotiations in Qatar with militants still fighting on the ground.

But bear in mind that we have been fighting the Afghan War exactly the way Obama and the rest of the left wanted us to fight a war. With European allies and with very strict rules of engagement. And look at how well it turned out.

There will only be peace in Afghanistan when the Taliban get back into power. And now there is no one to stop them.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the insurgents fired two rockets into the Bagram Air Base outside the Afghan capital, Kabul, late on Tuesday. American officials confirmed the base had come under attack by indirect fire — likely a mortar or rocket — and that four U.S. troops were killed.

Also Tuesday, five Afghan police officers were killed at a security outpost in Helmand province by apparent Taliban infiltrators — the latest in a string of so-called "insider attacks" that have shaken the confidence of the nascent Afghan security forces…

Who just yesterday were given complete control of Afghanistan’s security.

But it turns out Obama is right, after all. The war on terror is over. The terrorists have won.

  1. Nice to know the US Government arranged to spend sixty eleventy trillion dollars, kill nearly 2,500 and wounded nearly 30,000 of our best and brightest and wear out the military in order to capitulate to ragheaded stone age murderers.
