The way it currently looks, I’ll be doing a bunch of intensive training through 2010, including OCS (I’m currently E-4 but being groomed for officer rank), jump school, and Transportation and/or Civil Affairs officers’ training. It seems my first assignment will involve building schools for girls in remote areas of Afghanistan, where i’ll probably have to be dropped in because the insurgent activity is so treacherous. I’m excited and have gotten my wife to a peaceful place about it all, since we are both aware that my assignment will be extremely high risk.

Building schools for girls is meaningful to me, because my Puerto Rican and Filipina grandmothers were both the first female generations to be taught reading and writing back in the 1920s, specifically because the US Army built schools for girls and broke with Spain’s policy of forbidding female literacy on a large scale. I have a photo of my Filipina grandmother in the eighth grade, with a bunch of other Filipina girls, and very pale American Christian missionary and Army officer at the center of the pic. Whatever the feelings people have about American “imperialism,” I am happy that by building girls’ schools in Central Asia I will bring my family’s history full circle, and it is an honorable endeavor. I have come to believe, anyway, that regimes/cultures that oppress females to disgusting extremes are usually the same ones that terrorize their neighbors, so women’s rights are an excellent focus for the US as it intervenes in Afghanistan.

I am glad that you all have been so diligent! Even with my whirlwind schedule I have been able to check in with S&L 3 or 4 times since the summer. You are making conservatives proud!

And I hope you all can fight for Sarah Palin, who is coming under such unfair attacks by the people around me. It is inspiring and disgusting all at once.

Do you know your first assignment yet? We thought about you during the Ft Hood attack and shameful aftermath. God bless those heroes. Personally, I think that one is fully on the administration. The bad stuff about Hasan started coming out last December. I’m speculating higher ups in the admistration knew about him and said to let it lie. I can’t believe the agencies would ignore red flags waving that wildly.

Now we are busy blocking the fascist takeover of American Health Care. And of course, we all love Sarah. She is really the only national political figure who doesn’t pussy-foot around the issues. You gotta love her.

My brainstorm for 2012 is TWO women. Sarah and either Michelle Bachman or Liz Cheney. Unbeatable!!
