Obama Retakes Pres Oath – Without Bible

Tucked away in the Reuters “Business & Finance – Deals – Regulatory News” section:

Obama takes oath again after inauguration mistake

Wed Jan 21, 2009

By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON, Jan 21 (Reuters) – Out of "an abundance of caution," U.S. President Barack Obama took the oath of office a second time on Wednesday at the White House because a word was out of sequence when he was sworn in on Tuesday.

Chief Justice John Roberts, who first administered the oath to Obama on Tuesday on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, administered it again to the president on Wednesday in front of reporters and a few members of the president’s staff.

"We believe that the oath of office was administered effectively and that the president was sworn in appropriately yesterday," Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told a hastily gathered group of journalists, quoting a statement from White House counsel Greg Craig.

"But the oath appears in the Constitution itself and, out of an abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath a second time."

Then Gibbs ushered reporters into the Map Room, where Obama was waiting, smiling, along with the chief justice. The president visited with journalists and then stood next to Roberts and took the oath again.

During the ceremony on the steps of the Capitol on Tuesday Roberts accidentally switched the word order when he administered the oath, saying "I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully," instead of, "I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States."

Obama, who briefly interrupted the chief justice by starting the oath before Roberts finished reciting the first part, then repeated back the line as Roberts had said it.

On Wednesday, Obama joked with reporters that he wanted to do it again for fun.

"We decided, you know, that it was so much fun!" he said.

Then Roberts asked him if he was ready to take the oath.

"I am. We’re going to do it very slowly," Obama said.

Obama raised his right hand, Roberts administered the oath in the right order, and Obama repeated it correctly.

"Congratulations again," the chief justice said after they were finished.

"Thank you sir," Obama replied as staff members applauded.

Maybe it was the presence of the Bible that threw him off the first time.

Maybe he didn’t want to get struck by lightning while placing his hand on the Bible because he knew he was lying the words he spoke.

  2. Souris_Optique says:

The first oath was valid, despite a transposition of words that did nothing to change its meaning, and it WAS taken with his hand on the Bible, which is, btw, not required for the oath to be valid.
Herbert Hoover messed his oath up considerably worse, and did not retake it at all.

“I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully,”

    Sounds right to me.

  4. Confucius says:

Of course it had to be done again. Democrats always re-write history until it’s just “right. He couldn’t go down in the most historic day of all history flubbing it up on Day One.

Personally, I think the flub up was God paying him back for the Saddleback Civil Forum.

  5. dulcimergrl says:

I’ve been noticing that the MSM is reporting the Chief Justice flubbed it, not He Who Must Not Be Named. Typical! :-(

  6. proreason says:

Well, give Roberts credit. He tried to give us a card to play when unemployment hits 25%, and China annexes Japan.

  7. AmericanIPA says:

An “abundance of caution” should be able to produce a proper birth certificate for the Community Organizer in Chief too, shouldn’t it?

  8. 1laidbackRN says:

I saw a clip of Biden taking a shot at Chief Justice Roberts over it. It’s so great that this new government has introduced us to a new age of bi-partisanship. We now have two grown men with the mentality of 12 year olds leading this nation. Thank you America for listening to the likes of Oprah, Ellen and Lindsey Lohan about who to vote for.

Biden oath joke gets icy reception

By Ben Feller, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON – No joke: Barack Obama had to take the presidential oath twice. No, seriously Joe, no joke.

One of the small but memorable moments to emerge from Obama’s first full day in office Wednesday came when Vice-President Joe Biden offered up a quip that did not seem to thrill his new boss. Those who have followed the vice-president’s long career as a senator chalked it up to Biden being Biden.

The scene happened when Obama asked Biden to swear in some senior staff members of the new administration.

“Am I doing this again?” Biden said. He was apparently referring to the fact that he had already sworn in members of Obama’s cabinet earlier in the day, including some people who were in the room in front of him at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

“For the senior staff,” Obama clarified. “For the senior staff, all right,” Biden responded.

And then Biden said this: “My memory is not as good as Justice Roberts, Chief Justice Roberts.” The line drew an “oooh” from the audience, the kind one gets after serving up a zinger.

Chief Justice John Roberts, as millions of people saw Tuesday, had slightly flubbed Obama’s original oath, which prompted Obama to do the same.

Obama did not laugh or even smile at Biden’s line. His look and body language were serious. Cable news outlets replayed the moment prominently.

Biden is known for sometimes getting himself in trouble with his words – or as critics would say, shooting from the lip. Obama knows this, saying Biden has a penchant for “rhetorical flourishes.”

BOM BOM BOMMMM!!! (the “Oh shit!” music from Space 1999)
      The One was ‘not amused’.

Biden has a penchant for “rhetorical flourishes.”

Ah yes. I recall President Bush being looked on with such fond amusement too…

  9. AmericanIPA says:

I’m sure the MSM will hold him accountable and he will never make another cheap shot again. He will also, no doubt, ever say anything stupid again.

When small, unimportant, and unintelligent people think they get something on someone who is a hundred times their superior in every way, this is how they try to get even. Biden is a nobody who has charmed, kissed ass, and bullshitted his way to the top. To assume he has any shame remaining is beyond ridiculous. John Roberts earned his position as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court through actual hard work and intelligence, which Biden is too petty to understand.

The guy got one freaking word out of sequence on the first of these oaths he has ever administered, and he’s a dunce to Joe “gaffoligist” Biden. You’re a peach, Joe.

  10. GuppyNblue says:

I think the ghost of Lincoln just couldn’t tolerate Obama swearing in with his Bible. So now he has sworn in with no Bible, right? Sometimes it’s the little things that mean so much.

    • jobeth says:

Have you ever watched a dog mark his territory?…. I think that is what was going on when he used Lincoln’s Bible. That being done he no longer needs it.

  11. wardmama4 says:

-‘His look and body language were serious’- I’m thinking of the movie Dave – I suspect that our intrepid, looselipped VP is about to find himself on a 4 year tour of all the third World countries – to keep his mouth as far away from The One ™ as possible. . .

You know I heard an interesting caller on talk radio today – If The One ™ is as addicted to his Blackberry as the Obamamedia says he is – that poses a very serious problem for the Secret Service as they are GPS enabled and can be tracked down to a very narrow range. Can you imagine being the one forced to take away the Blackberry from The One ™ – bet that they made Michelle do it!

“…execute the office of the President…” I guess it depends upon the meaning of “execute”,

“His look and body language were serious.”

Sorry, no. In truth, he actually gave Biden a very nasty, irritated look.

  14. U NO HOO says:

Biden’s remark about Roberts was just a joke. Far tamer than what Bush has been getting for eight years. I would have said the same thing in friendly company. As soon as the liberals retire and maybe one conservative justice retires, has to happen in the next eight years of Obama reign, Roberts will be a foot note.

Obama looked really peeved. A little on edge actually. Maybe Obama’s chickens are coming home to roost, so to speak, Obama realized what he had done choosing the Slip-of-the-Lip-in-Chief. Ironic that Biden shouldn’t hurt Roberts feelings but a botched abortion can be left to die, because that is what the woman wanted.

I try to like Obama but then I remember stuff.

So far I don’t like a thing about him except that we’re three days closer to the ’12 elections.
