Obama: Senate Bill Will Provide Amnesty For 11M

From the Weekly Standard:

Obama in Mexico: Immigration Reform Provides Citizenship for 11 Million ‘In This Country Illegally’

By DANIEL HALPER | May 4, 2013

In his weekly address filmed this time in Mexico City, President Obama touted his efforts to reform the immigration system. He made sure to say the "bill is a compromise," and included this gaffe, "It would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally."

We hate to argue with the Weekly Standard, but where is the gaffe? Or is it that Obama and the rest of the Democrats say the bill is not amnesty?

The president said he brought up the topic because it "affects both our countries." …

"The truth is, right now, our border with Mexico is more secure than it’s been in years.  We’ve put more boots on that border than at any time in our history, and illegal crossings are down by nearly 80 percent from their peak in 2000." …

And never mind that border crossings have doubled or even tripled since the talk of amnesty has resumed.

"This bill is a compromise, which means that nobody got everything they wanted – including me.  But it’s largely consistent with the principles I’ve laid out from the beginning." …

Meaning, amnesty.

"It would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally." …

Or maybe the gaffe is that Obama is lowballing the figure. Since everyone knows they will bring in their families and friends, via ‘chain immigration.’

Anyway, how much do you want to bet Obama and his handlers thought this weekend would be the ideal time to go to Mexico? They probably thought they could join in all of the celebrations of Cinco de Mayo.

And never mind that Cinco de Mayo is really only celebrated in the US. And, in fact, it was only popularized here to sell beer.  (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

I can no longer comment on this with civility

I assumed the gaffe was using “illegally” to describe residence status of the precious undocument democrats.

  3. Kytross says:

The gaffe was that he is speaking in Mexico and said ‘this country.’ There aren’t 11 million illegals in Mexico. I doubt there are 11.
