Obama Speaks Under Arafat Photo On West Bank

From the Weekly Standard:

Obama Speaks Under Arafat Banner

By DANIEL HALPER | March 21, 2013

At a press conference today in Ramallah [which is a Palestinian city on the West Bank], President Barack Obama addressed the assembled journalists while standing under a Yasser Arafat banner.

"Hope everyone saw presser. If not there, it was notable that Obama and Abbas spoke from under a banner bearing pictures of Arafat and Abbas. Also another big banner was hanging on wall nearby with Abbas kind of superimposed on Arafat," the White House pool reporter notes.

It’s pretty amazing that the White House pool reporter would even bother to note this. He must be new.

But for once we have an honest ‘optic,’ from the White House. Though, to be fair, Obama might have thought it was a photo of Ringo Starr.

Arafat, as the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting [CAMERA] has noted, "is known to many as the “father of modern terrorism.” …

CAMERA notes, "In fact, groups under Arafat’s direct or indirect command – including Fatah, Black September, Tanzim and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade – were responsible for hundreds of bombings, hijackings, assassinations and other attacks, including the 1972 murder of 11 of Israel’s Olympic athletes in Munich, the 1973 murder of the American ambassador to Sudan, Cleo Noel, and the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship (resulting in the murder of wheelchair-bound Leon Klinghoffer)."

Not to mention the billion or so dollars Mr Arafat pilfered from the poor Palestinian people.

Meanwhile, lest we forget, here is a flashback to a May 2012 report from CNS News:

Georgetown Says It Covered Over Name Of Jesus To Comply With White House Request

May 7, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – Georgetown University says it covered over the monogram “IHS”–symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ—because it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the “IHS” monogram that had previously adorned the stage at Georgetown’s Gaston Hall was still covered up–when the pediment where it had appeared was photographed by CNSNews.com.

“In coordinating the logistical arrangements for yesterday’s event, Georgetown honored the White House staff’s request to cover all of the Georgetown University signage and symbols behind Gaston Hall stage,” Julie Green Bataille, associate vice president for communications at Georgetown, told CNSNews.com…

On Wednesday, CNSNews.com inspected the pediment embedded in the wall at the back of the stage in Gaston Hall, where Obama delivered his speech. The letters “IHS” were not to be found. They appeared to be shrouded with a triangle of black-painted plywood.

Pictures of the wooden pediment prior to Obama’s speech show the letters “IHS" in gold. Many photos posted on the Internet of other events at Gaston Hall show the letters clearly…

Roman Catholics traditionally use “IHS” as an abbreviation for Jesus’ name…

IHS are the first three letters of "Jesus" in Greek (Ίησους, in Greek capitals ΙΗΣΟΥΣ). And we can’t have that!

‘The future must not belong to those who would defame the prophet.’

    Great catch, Steve.

The juxtaposition is violent –– Arafat versus Jesus.

The murder of Leon Klinghoffer certainly has to be one of the most heinous and cowardly crimes in memory. The Munich massacre by Black September is yet another.

Interesting to see that our merciful and all-forgiving President is now OK with that, and has decided to let bygones be bygones.

By the way, contrary to the impression left by most news reports, including the one from CNS News above, the covering-up at Georgetown University for Nerobama’s economics speech was not limited to the Jesus “IHS” monogram above the dais in Gaston Hall. Also covered up there were the Christian cross, the painting of three female figures symbolizing morality, faith, and patriotism, and the Jesuit motto “Ad majorem Dei gloriam” (To the greater glory of God).

These coverings-up and removals were unprecedented in the history of Georgetown University. Over the years many persons of national and international stature have spoken at Gaston Hall and other University buildings, including thirteen other U.S. presidents, but never before have such draconian measures been taken or even contemplated. Even Hillary Clinton didn’t dare go that far.

All thirteen prior U.S. presidents, from Abe Lincoln to Bill Clinton, spoke from the steps of Old North. It is unknown why Nerobama chose to switch the traditional venue from Old North to Gaston Hall, although I am tempted to believe it was because Old North adjoins and faces the Dahlgren Chapel of the Sacred Heart, and it would have been a stretch to demand that the University demolish the church.

In addition, security precautions went well beyond those taken for other presidents who have previously appeared at Georgetown.

Early on the morning of 14 Apr 2009, the Secret Service and DC police roped off a large perimeter for the President’s appearance, closing down a vast area which encompassed the main part of the Georgetown University campus, including most of the classroom and administrative buildings, as well as residential areas outside the campus walls. All University buildings in the general vicinity of Gaston Hall were placed on lock-down.

No signs of Christianity were left visible within this roped-off part of the campus, except the Dahlgren Chapel and the statue of Archbishop John Carroll, the University’s Jesuit founder.

“And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws….” Dan. 7:25.

Georgetown University is a private research university in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1789, it is the oldest Jesuit and Catholic university in the United States.

no outcry from the state media.
    no constitutional issue here.

  3. “He must be new”

    Priceless, Steve
