I won't be voting in the US elections as i'm not American. I can offer the insight that your nation right or wrong is the worlds most powerful - as a traditional anglo new world ally of the US it seems fair to consider ourselves - as New Zealanders - as part of the US global empire. We have autonomy of course and our own democratic process but - as the credit crunch demonstrates - we are hugely effected by what happens in the US and the whole globe is affected by your mismanagement of your economy and of course any ill conceived US foreign policy - whatever the nuances of that might be.

If the US wants to own its mantle as light of the world and even simply do a good job of being the most powerful nation with at least some air of benignity then having presidential candidates who even give a damn what the rest of the world thinks about US leadership of said world is essential.

Unlike you Americans I breath a sigh of relief that Obama has travelled and sought to discover opinions of the US from outside the US. Distance brings perspective and if you want to be the leader of the world you need to get out of your own back yard and see what the world actually is.
