Obama To Demand Panel For BP Payouts

From the Politico:

President Obama to demand third-party panel for BP payouts

By: Mike Allen
June 13, 2010

President Barack Obama plans to use a meeting with BP executives this week to demand that they create and fund an escrow account and accept an independent panel to handle damage claims by individuals and businesses hurt by the Gulf disaster, a White House official told POLITICO.

Yes, this is what Mr. Obama does best. Demand things – especially “panels.”

Obama wants BP to set aside funds to pay damage claims, to be “paid out under fair, efficient, and transparent procedures administered by an independent third-party panel established just for this purpose,” the official said.

The announcement is the latest effort by the White House to be sure BP, not taxpayers, wind up with the bulk of the bill from the nation’s worst environmental calamity.

Isn’t it touching how concerned Mr. Obama suddenly is about we taxpayers? Or is it even more important to him to destroy BP?

The White House has become exasperated with BP’s handling of claims, which the administration says has been slow and clumsy.

How ridiculous. Since the oil spill is still ongoing, how can anyone know what their final damage is going to be? Any preliminary claims are going to be largely a waste of time.

"We’ve been very concerned about the claims process. This is not the core function of an oil producing company,” Admiral Thad Allen said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” "One of the things we’ve been talking about is an independent third party to administer a fund to make sure this happens quicker.”

You see, retired Coast Guard admirals are experts on all things. Unlike mega-corporations like BP, with their armies of lawyers and vast experience with settling damage claims.

Gulf coast governors have also pressed for a streamlined claims process, and for BP to pay out for the secondary costs of the spill, such as its impact on tourism – a goal that could be aided by a third party system for determining payouts, rather than submitting claims to the oil company…

The White House official said: “The president will make clear that he expects, and that if necessary will exercise his full legal authority to ensure, that BP sets aside the funds required to pay individuals and businesses damaged by this massive spill. And that those funds will be paid out under fair, efficient, and transparent procedures administered by an independent third-party panel established just for this purpose.”

Yes, there need to be more middle men. And, hopefully, they will be radical leftwing college professors, union heads (like Andy Stern) and members of objective ‘think tanks’ like the Center For American Progress and the Sierra Club.

What could be more fair than that?

With $1M in campaign contributions from BP, there’s only one reason for setting up the panel – to find a way to let BP off the hook with plausible deniability for TCO.

At last, the man of action acts. And what are those actions:

    – form a committee
    – demonize his “opponent”
    – declare he is protecting people’s “rights”
    – blame somebody else
    – get people really angry

Why, it’s almost like he is running for emperor again.

The only thing that’s different is that, so far at least, we don’t know who he has extorted money from.

  3. mr_bill says:

I have not heard of one single account of BP not paying a legitimate claim. On the contrary, they have been quite liberal in their payments of claims and we have heard such from countless news stories. If there had been a problem, the MSM would have been all over it and nero’s regime would have made reference to a specific example, but they didn’t because this is bunk. Its just another way for tyranny to slip its hand [further] into private industry.

    • BannedbytheTaliban says:

No doubt that BP will be on the hook for maybe billions in fraud. I’m sure there are some who didn’t get enough Katrina money who are still looking for their handout.

“I’m sure there are some who didn’t get enough Katrina money ”

Some as in about 400,000, including about 100,000 who only moved back to Lousiana until, oh, about early April 2010.

      Justice.

  4. bill says:

This oil spill will go down in history as massive regulatory failure. From the approving of original single casing well design, to the MMS cluster-you-know what that ensued after drilling started.

How about we demand Obama do his job and take charge of the containment and cleanup. And how about all those MMS waivers you gave to the Deepwater Horizon, especially the environment planning for disaster waivers.

Besides, don’t courts usually find you guilty first? Obama demands smacks a lot like Chavez demands.

I hope there is a real trial, then we can see all.

  5. Right of the People says:

Any reason to form another government entity. Of course there must be tons of left-wing academics out of work who need a job. These could be another dozen “jobs” his stimulus program has created.

  6. Mithrandir says:

WOW! Well, people LOVE lawyer shows, they LOVE electing lawyers, people LOVE to send their kids to law schools.

This is what lawyers do! Hello? McFly!

    ~Micromanaging
~Reorganizing the English language to suit their needs
~Smearing opponents instead of opposing ideas
~Lecturing the jury (the American people)
~Forcing people into a situation in which 1. Your REALLY screwed. 2. You are just slightly less screwed.

What in the world did you expect when people elected Obama, Biden, and off in the corner Hillary, Bill, and somewhere under a rock, John Edwards—ALL LAWYERS!

    • proreason says:

Lawyers are one of the root causes of the problems this country has.

      – marxist idealogues
      – the new aristocracy
      – journalists
      – intelligencia
      – politicians
      – lawyers
      – race baiters
      – unions

in approximate order. The shit flows downhill in the list

  7. BigOil says:

Settling disputes through a court of law has become an antiquated concept in the Age of Obama. What could be more fair than a group of unaccountable liberals with the power to dole out a company’s money?

Tyranny…Obama style. Use fellow travelers under the guise of independent panels to implement your dictates.

BP is about to get their own death panel.
