Obama To Send Up To 1200 NG To Border

From a deeply saddened New York Times:

Obama to Send 1,200 Guard Troops to Mexico Border

May 25, 2010

LOS ANGELES — President Obama will send up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the Southwest border and increase spending on law enforcement, yielding to demands from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers there that border security be tightened, administration officials said.

Democrat lawmakers were demanding this? Who are these racists?

By the way, note the “up to.”

Mr. Obama is expected to make the announcement Tuesday, the officials said, after a meeting with lawmakers.

Homeland Security officials said that the troops would provide support to law enforcement officers already working along the border by helping observe and monitor traffic between official crossing points, and would help analyze trafficking patterns in hopes of intercepting illegal drug shipments. They performed similar tasks in an earlier deployment along the border from 2006 to 2008, when they also assisted with road and fence construction. The troops have not been involved directly in intercepting border crossers

The National Guard are probably being sent down there to keep the local police from doing any ‘profiling.’

Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat from southern Arizona, praised the decision. Ms. Giffords is expecting a strong challenge for reelection, and was an early proponent of sending troops to the border.

“The White House is doing the right thing,” she said in a statement announcing the move. “Arizonans know that more boots on the ground means a safer and more secure border. Washington heard our message.”

So the only politician quoted by the New York Times is a Democrat who is suddenly gotten religion now that he is in a tough re-election fight?

For the record, here what Ms. Giffords (represents the Tucson area) had to say to NPR about Arizona’s “message”:

Rep. GIFFORDS: Well, SB-1070, the next immigration law that was passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Brewer is directly a reaction to crimes like the Krantz murder. However, SB-1070 does absolutely nothing to secure the border. It pulls together some state laws and some local law enforcement that asks for what unfortunately will probably result in U.S. citizens being required to show proof of citizenship, but really does not take the necessary steps that we need to take in order to secure the border.

Too bad The Times doesn’t give credit where it is due — like to the courageous Republican, Governor Jan Brewer and the legislators who passed SB 1070.

But when have they ever done that?

bet the National Guard troops Obama’s sending to the border won’t be allowed to carry weapons.

    • proreason says:

      absolutely. no weapons.

And the chances of any troops getting to the border are remote anyway.

This is purely a grandstanding ploy to try to peel off a few votes from moderates.

The illegal voters know the Moron doesn’t mean it.

      There is always a catch:

1200 troops, but not until 2016.

1200 troops added 1 each day for 1200 days.

1200 troops, but they won’t do anything.

1200 troops, but with nerf sticks.

1200 troops, but without any sort of training to do their job.

~That is how to pacify the populace, and the critics will have to expend 1000x more energy investigating whether the policy is effective, prove it to the people again, get people outraged AGAIN, and by that time years will have passed, and people will move on to some other issue.

But I thought we are not defined by our borders, just our bonds.

  3. JohnMG says:

These troops are forbidden by law from performing law enforcement duties. They are another use of presidential power to do as Pro says.

The moron needs votes for repeal of DA-DT, “finance reform”, and a whole host of other aspects of his agenda. There isn’t a sincere bone in hos body.

  4. GetBackJack says:

    2,000 miles of border.

    1,200 National Guardsmen.

    2000/1,200 = .6 manpower per mile.

They don’t seem to have thought their cunning plan all the way through.

  5. oldswimcoach says:

If the state calls them up they can enforce the law, if they are federalized they can’t. In fairness, Bush did a simular thing, for a simular reason (appearances without actually doing anything). It would be interesting though if the the president declared the illegals crossing the boarder an invasion force (which they are), and allowed the use of escalating force to thwart illegal border crossings. Never happen of course, but I can dream…

    • JohnMG says:

You’re correct, coach. If he federalizes them, which he has done, then he also has to pay them, not the state. So it is a token move and he’s hoping the general public is too stupid to know. On that count he’s probably right. After all, they were gulled into voting for him, weren’t they?

  6. FCAFlyer says:

Ramos and Compean – and this travesty of the highest magnitude was performed intentionally by Bush. They could have been and should have been pardoned immediately for shooting a an illegal, violent Mexican drug smuggler in the ass (non-lethal hit – he was back smuggling drugs in short order).

  7. Mithrandir says:

The marketing campaign is right on course.

Anything Obama does has a positive spin doesn’t it? He now plays both sides of the fence.

    1. Enforcing immigration laws is racist. (Democrats cheer)

    2. I am sending he National Guard to enforce immigration laws. (Democrats cheer)

The sad news is, people will fall for such shallow nonsense, and they know it.

  8. mr_bill says:

More symbolism. Liberals live on symbolism, they are a “symbol-minded” people, to quote George Carlin. Here we have a flacid, ineffective president who thrives on empty gestures, who by this action is confirming what we already know about him. He is sending these Guardsmen to “show” he is doing something–not actually do anything, its just for appearances.

Some say Neville Obama is oblivious to the public opinion, but he is very aware of it. He knows an electoral tidal wave is heading toward D.C. this November and one of the hot-button issues is immigration. He wants the appearance of a “moderate” so he can say “see, I’m helping,” but he also wants an escape hatch to he cal tell illegal intruders and their advocates “I sent those Guardsmen, but I made sure they couldn’t do anything to stop you.” He will wink and they will snicker and they will both believe they have Americans hoodwinked, again.

    Duplicity on parade.

Too bad real solutions are NEVER offered.
Here’s what to do. in 2 easy steps:
    1) We are being invaded. Because of that, station 50k Marines along the border with orders to shoot anyone crossing the border.

    2) Make hiring Illegals a Felony punishable by real time in a “pound-em-in-the-ass” prison and fines starting at 25k per day per illegal. Make both those in the HR department culpable and also make the CEO and Board of Directors culpable as well. It would stop this invasion overnight.

True Story – I did some consulting work for a company that did hearing testing primarily at Meat procession plants. One of the problems they had was “validating” these tests. The vans would pull up to the factory and test the employees and somehow there would be 25 or so “Jose Gonzalez” another 25+ “Juan Valdez’s” all somehow with the same SSN and the same birthday. When you looked into this further, there would be several others from different plants that were using the same SSN and had the same name and birthday. This is why we are having problems with illegals. These are not jobs NO ONE will do, but good paying jobs that people have made hiring illegals as part of their business plan.

    • proreason says:

And that is why you know Republicans are as eager to get the illegal votes as the Dems are.

And btw, I can support amnesty. All they have to do is pay back ALL taxes of any form for their entire life in the US, plus fines for breaking the law, file for resisdency and get at the back of the line for citizenship. Unless they have a misdemenor of any kind or can’t speak passable English, in which case they walk back to their home country.

But they should be able to get work permits if they aren’t criminals. But no tax credits, and SS must be withheld, plus they should have 10-25% of their wages withheld for the priviledge of being here (to the states, not the feds). And they have to pay for all public services. And their employers must pay stiff fines for violations. The 10-25% would be waived after a year or two in the citizenship process, provided they are making progress and their English is improving.

Gee, I’m feeling like a compassionate conservative now. I think I deserve a hug, or at least a chocolate bar.
