Obama To Terrorists: Hang On ‘Til 2010

Obama to end combat operation in Iraq by August 2010

By Ross Colvin

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Six years after U.S.-led forces invaded Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein, President Barack Obama will announce on Friday the withdrawal of all U.S. combat forces by August 2010, administration officials said.

The 19-month timetable marks a historic juncture in an unpopular war that has proven enormously costly to America and defined the presidency of George W. Bush. It has been a huge drain on the Treasury, cost the lives of some 4,250 U.S. soldiers and severely damaged America’s standing in the world.

"The president will announce that the current combat mission in Iraq will end on August 31, 2010. At that point, the remaining forces in Iraq will undertake a new mission, a more limited mission," a senior administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Obama is due to make the announcement at Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps base in North Carolina, from where 8,000 Marines are to be deployed as part of a troop buildup in Afghanistan to arrest the deteriorating security situation there.

For many war-weary Americans, however, the Iraq war, a major issue in last year’s presidential campaign, has been dramatically overshadowed by a deep recession that has left many battling to make ends meet and millions jobless.

Some 35,000 to 50,000 of the 142,000 U.S. troops now in Iraq will remain to train and equip the Iraqi forces, protect civilian reconstruction projects and conduct limited counterterrorism operations, the official said.

As U.S. troops draw down, Washington will put more focus on a regional diplomatic strategy and greater efforts to encourage Iraq’s leaders to strengthen a fragile political stability to prevent a resurgence of the sectarian bloodshed that erupted in 2006 and killed tens of thousands of Iraqis.

By the end of 2011, the aim is to have "zero" U.S. troops in Iraq, in line with a military pact signed between the two countries, the official said. Asked whether the drawdown was irrevocable, another official said Obama reserved the right to revisit any plans if it was in the U.S. national interest…

Iraqi defense officials said a 19-month timetable was a faster drawdown than they would have liked but that it was acceptable if Iraq’s security forces, still lacking much military hardware, could equip themselves in time.

Note how al-Reuters does their best to begin the first rewrite of history:

The 19-month timetable marks a historic juncture in an unpopular war that has proven enormously costly to America and defined the presidency of George W. Bush. It has been a huge drain on the Treasury, cost the lives of some 4,250 U.S. soldiers and severely damaged America’s standing in the world.

Something tell us this will not be the view in the long run.

For many war-weary Americans, however, the Iraq war, a major issue in last year’s presidential campaign, has been dramatically overshadowed by a deep recession that has left many battling to make ends meet and millions jobless.

In other words, once the War In Iraq was won, Reuters and the rest of the media decided to talk us in to a recession.

(An obvious strategy we noted more than a year ago.)

As U.S. troops draw down, Washington will put more focus on a regional diplomatic strategy and greater efforts to encourage Iraq’s leaders to strengthen a fragile political stability to prevent a resurgence of the sectarian bloodshed that erupted in 2006 and killed tens of thousands of Iraqis.

Yes, diplomacy always works in situations like this, especially in the Middle East. We’ve seen succeed time and again.

By the way, please also note how Reuters save mentioning until the final paragraph that Iraqi defense officials think this is happening too soon:

Iraqi defense officials said a 19-month timetable was a faster drawdown than they would have liked…

Wouldn’t you think that would be an important point to tell their readers early on?

Obama has just given al Qaeda all the encouragement they need.

    From Fox News:

Obama Sets 2010 Date for Ending Iraq War

Combat operations in Iraq would end on Aug. 31, 2010, when the U.S. military footprint in Iraq would be no fewer than 35,000 and no more than 50,000, according to officials who met Thursday with the president

    By Major Garrett

President Obama told top leaders in Congress on Thursday that he will end combat operations in Iraq on Aug. 31, 2010, putting a halt to all U.S.-led counterinsurgency efforts and transitioning the mission in Iraq to training, advising and engaging in limited counter-terrorist operations, congressional sources tell FOX News.

The president is expected to deliver a speech Friday at the Marine base in Camp Lejeune, N.C, in which he will order an immediate drawdown of the 142,000 Marines and Army personnel in Iraq. He has set a goal of reducing the U.S. military footprint in Iraq to no fewer than 35,000 and no more than 50,000 personnel after that date, congressional leaders were told.

The president met at the White House with top Democratic and Republican congressional leaders, as well as the leaders of the National Security and Foreign Policy committees to explain his decision.

The president told lawmakers troops that remain in Iraq after Aug. 31, 2010, will carry out new missions and will be trained and organized in a way that de-emphasizes combat-readiness and intensifies the focus on these three missions:

    * Train, equip and advise Iraqi security forces
    * Support civilian operations in Iraq aimed at reconstruction, redevelopment and political reconciliation
    * Conduct targeted counter-terrorism missions.

The president told lawmakers the plan, which ends combat operations 19 months after he was sworn in as president, represented the consensus advice he received from Defense Secretary Robert Gates; the Joints Chiefs of Staff; Army Gen. Ray Ordierno, the top military commander in Iraq, and Gen. David Petaeus, head of U.S. Central Command. …

The Iraqi insurgency is over, and the insurgency won.

Anyone want to make bets on what time on September 1, 2010 the elected Iraqi government is killed en masse?

All al Qaeda need do is lay low and stockpile weapons until then.

I don’t understand all this talk of an “unpopular” war. This war is incredibly popular in my house.

“Obama is due to make the announcement at Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps base in North Carolina, from where 8,000 Marines are to be deployed as part of a troop buildup in Afghanistan to arrest the deteriorating security situation there.”

There’s no other reason to announce this from Lejeune other than to stroke his huge ego. The amount of work they have to go through to have him on that base is enormous. There’s a reason Bush wasn’t base hopping for eight years.
This is a cheap way to get support from Marines. They don’t want to be an occupying force in Iraq – or anywhere – but they do want an enemy to kill, like in Afghanistan. So he’s guaranteed some applause, but still, what the heck is he going to say to a bunch of Marines? He has absolutely nothing in common with any of them. Okay, maybe smoking.
He needs some good CinC photo ops, though, so they’ll gather huge numbers of troops, no doubt, and show him lording over them. He doesn’t begin to deserve that honor. What an arrogant fool.

    • Liberals Demise says:

What is he gonna say to a bunch of Marines?

“I am here to tell you guys that I’m starting my 2012 Campaign for ‘King of the Hill’ here at Camp Obama. You guys look sharp in those outfits you got on. I was thinking of joining the Marines but when I heard Hillary was turned down for bad eyesight, I said to myself that I can’t really help you snappy dressers because of the hemorrhoid I married. You all know Michele don’t you? After all these years…..she’s still my very own pain in the ass, hahahaha!!”

What a leader he is! What a warrior! From the meaty outcrops of Hamburgter Hill to the war torn jungles of Yoko Ono, there he is – handing out white flags, disarming the troops and telling the enemy that all they have to do is wait us out…but we all saw it coming. Here’s one from last summer, taken from the Artboy Archives:

ONLY IN AMERICA: the Legend of Barack Obama” is fightin’, laughin’ and lovin’ in “The Sands of Iwo Jima”!
Starring JOHN WAYNE as the tough-as-nails, hard chargin’ “Sgt Stryker”, JOHN AGAR as the sensitive, smarty pants college boy, “Pvt Conway” and introducing BARACK OBAMA as the charismatic, hoop-shootin’, Kennedyesque “Barack Obama”!

February 19, 1945: The volcanic island of Iwo Jima is furiously blasted by American warplanes and naval batteries as thousands of Marines approach the beaches in wave upon wave of landing craft.

Hidden in tunnels and bunkers carved deep into the volcanic rock, the Japanese garrison endure the bombardment almost unscathed. They wait and they watch, and as the first Americans approach the beach they creep forward to take up their firing positions…

“Let’s go, Marines!” cried Sgt Stryker as the ramp of the Higgins boat crashed heavily into the surf. He and his platoon, including irritating twit Pvt Conway, rushed forward onto the beach and …found themselves staring at a man in a suit and tie who was chewing gum.

“What the – who are you?” demanded Sgt Stryker.

“Hi! I’m Barack Obama!” announced the stranger. “I want to be your next president!”

“Sez you! Out of the way, pilgrim” growled Stryker. “We got a job to do!”

“Listen; I’m here on a fact finding mission to find a way out of this unfolding disaster into which we were so recklessly led by an ideologically driven and out of touch Administration in thrall to their Halliburton paymasters…”

“Cram it, pal. That’s traitor talk. Now move aside”.

“Hold on, Sarge” said Pvt Conway. “Let’s hear what he has to say”.

“Yeah, hear my positive message of change” said Obama. “We need to find a way out of this unending and open ended commitment and confront the real enemy we face”.

“Real enemy?” demanded Stryker as mortar shells crashed and 7.7mm machine gun fire whipped all around them. “Who do you think the Japs are?”

“They’re only a distraction fabricated by the White House cabal for their own political ends” said Obama. “Our real enemy is…Finland!”

    “Finland?”

“Think about it. What’s in Finland? Reindeer! The Finns own all the reindeer and that puts them in a position either to embargo our access to reindeer or to push the price of reindeer to impossible levels. What do we need reindeer for? Christmas! That’s right, Christmas; our most important national holiday and the foundation of our economy. How can Santa drive his sleigh without reindeer? No reindeer equals no Santa equals no Christmas equals no presents under the tree equals no Christmas shopping equals no economy equals national disaster – and all because of those rotten Finns hogging all the reindeer!”

What he says makes a lot of sense, Sarge” mused Pvt Conway. “A lot of sense”.

“My friends, we need reindeer independence to become our main national priority” urged Obama “and meanwhile we need a timetable for phased withdrawal from the Pacific so all you guys to get back in your boats and stuff and drive straight to Helsinki and march up to Lapland and get us our reindeer back!”

    “Hel-whatsie?” wondered Sgt Stryker.

“The Finnish capitol, Sarge” said college boy Pvt Conway helpfully. “Located on the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki is this young nation’s seat of government and its primary population center, with almost 5 million people living in the city or its environs. Founded in 1550 by King Gustav I of Sweden and originally known as ‘Helsingors’, the city is a vibrant hub of enterprise, commerce and culture…”

“Shuttup!” roared Stryker. “We’re moving out!”

    “To Finland?” asked Conway hopefully.

“Hell no! We’re gonna take this lousy piece of rock and then we’re going on to Tokyo!”

“That’s not a strategy to keep us safe” said Obama as enemy shells crashed nearby. “Short term success on the battlefield means little without political reconciliation and that isn’t happening. Look at this place – reconstruction has hardly begun! We still remain blindly committed to a thoughtless ‘us versus them’ mindset that shuts down any possibility of constructive dialogue…”

“BANZAI!” screamed a Japanese soldier, who suddenly jumped from his spider hole and rushed toward them furiously, flourishing a gleaming Samurai sword. “You die, Amelican! You die! BANZAI!”

    “Uh oh” said Obama.

“He’s all yours, bub” said Sgt Stryker.

    “Ulp” said Obama.

Regardless, I DO hope we pull out, cut and run, retreat, surrender, what ever the heck you want to call it, I call it getting-out-of-that-welfare-country-and-allowing-those-idiots-to-kill-each-other, so we can save our people’s lives and our money.

I don’t care about arab countries, or their problems. We have plenty of bombs we need to get rid of, if they cause us problems, we should just bomb them until they are not a problem anymore.

    • catie says:

So now you’re here. I see you’re still on the band wagon about how terrible Iraq is and I don’t think you really like the military that much either no matter what you pretend. It’s all about money for you isn’t it? I know you claim to care about their lives but really, what’s your skin in the game? If I remember correctly you had no one or maybe it was a neighbor or some distant cousin or former friend? I received an email after this speech from the father of a friend of ours who was KIA. Just saying that it seems to be following the Bush timeline but he hoped that his son didn’t die in vain and that if we leave and it falls apart, he fears for those people who will be left behind.
This little gem: I don’t care about arab countries, or their problems. We have plenty of bombs we need to get rid of, if they cause us problems, we should just bomb them until they are not a problem anymore.” is really telling. You complain about the war and yet you want to bomb everyone into oblivion until they’re not “a problem” for you. Wow, simply stunning.

    • proreason says:

I’ve no idea about brad’s like or dislike of the military, but his frustration with the Iraqi’s and Arabs is certainly understandable.

I think will be fools if we leave Iraq, but because of the strategic value of the country and the huge investment we have made in American blood. It’s a certainty that if/when we leave that region will blow up again and become just as dangerous as it was before we went in.

As for the Iraqi politicians, they are scum and ingrates. The people may be a different story.

  8. proreason says:

You really really have to wonder if The Moron intends to defend our country.

The Iraqi government should be shopping for their gravesites.

  9. pdsand says:

Where are the howls of hypocrisy? He got elected in part on his claim to get all troops out in 16 months.
And what, pray tell, is a combat troop versus apparently a non-combat troop? If he can get all the “combat troops” out, what will the remaining 50,000 people in U.S. armed forces uniforms around the place be? Will the commanders go down the line and pick the puny looking ones to stay behind? Only Soldiers on profiles and pregnant women?
On a more serious note, I’m sure he’ll enact some sort of RoE that says these troops will not fire unless fired upon, etc. etc, because that has always worked SO WELL!

  10. Right of the People says:

I agree we need to get out of Iraq and go next door to where the REAL problem is, Iran. Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran. Kill them all, let Allah sort them out.

    10-7

  11. proreason says:

Guess how The Moron plans to save $2 trillion over the next two years?

First you have to assume that we would have spent $170 billion per year in Iraq for each year of the next 10.

Then you assume that goes away. Keep your eye on the pea now. Presto, he “saves” nearly 1.5 billion.

The rest of the “savings” is done by…….keep your eye on the pea………Increasing taxes.

……….as the War on America continues……….

  12. doctor tecate says:

What’s the general opinion of Patraeus, Gibbs and McCain? They’re on board with this plan.

    • Liberals Demise says:

Are the fleas bothering you again, doc?
McCain? Who gives a gerbils nipple what he thinks anymore?
Patraeus? The clodhopper of a President had us losing the war before the General opened his mouth. Obla bla is a cut and run clodhopper so….what are you? An Obamanation, too?
