First you have to assume that we would have spent $170 billion per year in Iraq for each year of the next 10.

Then you assume that goes away. Keep your eye on the pea now. Presto, he “saves” nearly 1.5 billion.

I think will be fools if we leave Iraq, but because of the strategic value of the country and the huge investment we have made in American blood. It’s a certainty that if/when we leave that region will blow up again and become just as dangerous as it was before we went in.

“Let’s go, Marines!” cried Sgt Stryker as the ramp of the Higgins boat crashed heavily into the surf. He and his platoon, including irritating twit Pvt Conway, rushed forward onto the beach and …found themselves staring at a man in a suit and tie who was chewing gum.

“What the – who are you?” demanded Sgt Stryker.

“Hi! I’m Barack Obama!” announced the stranger. “I want to be your next president!”

“Sez you! Out of the way, pilgrim” growled Stryker. “We got a job to do!”

“Listen; I’m here on a fact finding mission to find a way out of this unfolding disaster into which we were so recklessly led by an ideologically driven and out of touch Administration in thrall to their Halliburton paymasters…”

“Cram it, pal. That’s traitor talk. Now move aside”.

“Hold on, Sarge” said Pvt Conway. “Let’s hear what he has to say”.

“Yeah, hear my positive message of change” said Obama. “We need to find a way out of this unending and open ended commitment and confront the real enemy we face”.

“Real enemy?” demanded Stryker as mortar shells crashed and 7.7mm machine gun fire whipped all around them. “Who do you think the Japs are?”

“They’re only a distraction fabricated by the White House cabal for their own political ends” said Obama. “Our real enemy is…Finland!”

“Finland?”

“Think about it. What’s in Finland? Reindeer! The Finns own all the reindeer and that puts them in a position either to embargo our access to reindeer or to push the price of reindeer to impossible levels. What do we need reindeer for? Christmas! That’s right, Christmas; our most important national holiday and the foundation of our economy. How can Santa drive his sleigh without reindeer? No reindeer equals no Santa equals no Christmas equals no presents under the tree equals no Christmas shopping equals no economy equals national disaster – and all because of those rotten Finns hogging all the reindeer!”

What he says makes a lot of sense, Sarge” mused Pvt Conway. “A lot of sense”.

“My friends, we need reindeer independence to become our main national priority” urged Obama “and meanwhile we need a timetable for phased withdrawal from the Pacific so all you guys to get back in your boats and stuff and drive straight to Helsinki and march up to Lapland and get us our reindeer back!”

“Hel-whatsie?” wondered Sgt Stryker.

“The Finnish capitol, Sarge” said college boy Pvt Conway helpfully. “Located on the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki is this young nation’s seat of government and its primary population center, with almost 5 million people living in the city or its environs. Founded in 1550 by King Gustav I of Sweden and originally known as ‘Helsingors’, the city is a vibrant hub of enterprise, commerce and culture…”

“Shuttup!” roared Stryker. “We’re moving out!”

“To Finland?” asked Conway hopefully.

“Hell no! We’re gonna take this lousy piece of rock and then we’re going on to Tokyo!”

“That’s not a strategy to keep us safe” said Obama as enemy shells crashed nearby. “Short term success on the battlefield means little without political reconciliation and that isn’t happening. Look at this place – reconstruction has hardly begun! We still remain blindly committed to a thoughtless ‘us versus them’ mindset that shuts down any possibility of constructive dialogue…”

“BANZAI!” screamed a Japanese soldier, who suddenly jumped from his spider hole and rushed toward them furiously, flourishing a gleaming Samurai sword. “You die, Amelican! You die! BANZAI!”

“Uh oh” said Obama.

“He’s all yours, bub” said Sgt Stryker.

“Ulp” said Obama.

There’s no other reason to announce this from Lejeune other than to stroke his huge ego. The amount of work they have to go through to have him on that base is enormous. There’s a reason Bush wasn’t base hopping for eight years.
This is a cheap way to get support from Marines. They don’t want to be an occupying force in Iraq – or anywhere – but they do want an enemy to kill, like in Afghanistan. So he’s guaranteed some applause, but still, what the heck is he going to say to a bunch of Marines? He has absolutely nothing in common with any of them. Okay, maybe smoking.
He needs some good CinC photo ops, though, so they’ll gather huge numbers of troops, no doubt, and show him lording over them. He doesn’t begin to deserve that honor. What an arrogant fool.
