Obama To Ban ‘Assault Rifles’ – For Mexico

From an elated CNN:

Obama, Calderón: Assault-gun ban could curb border violence

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) — Reviving a ban on assault weapons and more strictly enforcing existing gun laws could help tamp down drug violence that has run rampant on the U.S.-Mexican border, President Obama said Thursday.

Speaking alongside Mexican President Felipe Calderón, Obama said he has "not backed off at all" on a campaign pledge to try to restore the ban. It was instituted under President Clinton and allowed to lapse by President George W. Bush.

"I continue to believe that we can respect and honor the Second Amendment right in our Constitution — the rights of sportsmen and hunters and homeowners that want to keep their families safe — to lawfully bear arms, while dealing with assault weapons that, as we know here in Mexico, are used to fuel violence," Obama said

Calderón said that the link between Mexican drug violence and the U.S. ban on 19 types of military-style semi-automatic rifles — which lapsed in 2004 — is clear.

"From the moment the the prohibition on the sale of assault weapons was lifted a few years ago, we have seen an increase in the power of organized crime in Mexico," Calderón said.

He said that more than 16,000 assault weapons have been seized in the crackdown on drug traffickers, with almost 9 in 10 coming from the United States

Obama said he has asked Attorney General Eric Holder to study how current gun laws are enforced and whether loopholes in some can be tightened. He said laws already on the books should restrict the flow of weapons into Mexico…

Obama commended Calderón on the steps his government has taken.

"But I will not pretend that this is a Mexican responsibility alone," he said. "A demand for these drugs in the United States is what is helping keep these cartels in business. This war is being waged with guns not purchased here but in the United States."

Obama is to travel later in the week to the summit for meetings with Latin American leaders. While on the trip to Latin America, Obama said he seeks to engage in talks with the region’s leaders as equals.

"Times have changed," Obama said Wednesday.

He refused to criticize the leaders of Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, who have taken measures to change their constitutions to extend their holds on power.

"I think it’s important for the United States not to tell other countries how to structure their democratic practices and what should be contained in their constitutions," he said. "It’s up to the people of those countries to make a decision about how they want to structure their affairs." …

Just as was foretold by ourselves and others.

Mr. Obama is using the Mexican drug wars as an excuse to begin banning guns.

And the Constitution be damned.

"But I will not pretend that this is a Mexican responsibility alone," he said. "A demand for these drugs in the United States is what is helping keep these cartels in business. This war is being waged with guns not purchased here but in the United States."

We must be the new Bush.

It is always our fault.

"Times have changed," Obama said Wednesday.

He refused to criticize the leaders of Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, who have taken measures to change their constitutions to extend their holds on power.

Why would he criticize them?

They have the same regard for constitutions that he has.

"It’s up to the people of those countries to make a decision about how they want to structure their affairs."

Unless we’re talking about ‘global warming’ or poverty, of course.

Last time I checked the definition of an “assault rifle”, the distinguishing characteristics had to do with appearance, not function. Thus, if “assault rifles” were banned, a manufacturer could still make and sell such weapons by making minor modifications not affecting their ability to kill people.

Does this seem sensible to anyone?

    • Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

Yeah JDB, you’ll have the same firepower. The only problem is you’re gonna need a lot of clips or mags when they limit them to 3 round capacity. Between prohibitive taxation on ammo and limiting ammo capacity, you’re going to be put at a serious disadvantage if/when push comes to shove.

  2. Odie44 says:

If anyone wants to see a direct correlation in gun control – it’s this: When you limit the guns in America for any reason – it will bite you locally first, then nationally in elections. Oh – and add the caveat – “we are respnisible for Mexico’s problems” due to gun laws just adds fuel to the gun lobby and gun owners in America.

Remember folks – our own country arrests, detains and levies fines on border ranch owners and border patrol agents – while handcuffing their ability to protect their person and property, through “tort law”, via guns.

    2010 can’t come soon enough.

  3. RightWinger says:

I didn’t know that the US was a mass producer of AK-47s. Oh, we don’t produce them? I’m sure Lil’ Barry will rush right over to China and tell them to stop or else he will get the UN involved.

I’ve never had any interest in owning a gun for home protection, but I’m seriously giving it second thought now.

  4. U NO HOO says:

“almost 9 in 10 coming from the United States…”

The guest host on Beck just said that the quote is a lie.

    • Odie44 says:

Yep – yet still repeated ad nauseum in the MSM. 90% of “traced” guns come from the USA: primarily because – the USA traces guns, whereas the non traced guns, accounting for 85% of all guns in Mexico come from thin air or something…

Playing word games with gun owners and the gun lobby won’t go over well, especially when blaming America for
      Mexico’s problems.

    • Gila Monster says:

As others have pointed out on previous threads, Fox News has proven the “9 in10” figure to be a blatant lie.

      http://tinyurl.com/cdaxwu

In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told FOXNews.com, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

“Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number on it that would make it traceable, and the U.S. effort to trace weapons really only extends to weapons that have been in the U.S. market,” Matt Allen, special agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told FOX News.

In 2007-2008, according to ATF Special Agent William Newell, Mexico submitted 11,000 guns to the ATF for tracing. Close to 6,000 were successfully traced — and of those, 90 percent — 5,114 to be exact, according to testimony in Congress by William Hoover — were found to have come from the U.S.

But in those same two years, according to the Mexican government, 29,000 guns were recovered at crime scenes.

In other words, 68 percent of the guns that were recovered were never submitted for tracing. And when you weed out the roughly 6,000 guns that could not be traced from the remaining 32 percent, it means 83 percent of the guns found at crime scenes in Mexico could not be traced to the U.S.

Less than 1 in 5 is a far cry from “9 in 10”. Looks like the Mexican government is getting their talking points from the libtard anti-gun lobby at the DNC, just like the Obama administration.

As we all know, a lie repeated often enough becomes the pseudo-truth, at least in the weak minds of liberals.

  5. catie says:

And Barry’s American Apology 2009 Tour continues.
Yes, all the assault rifles come from the good old USA and they all go straight to Mexico.
Right Winger, I have had a gun for my personal protection for over 20 years. Many of my friends thought it strange or odd but since about March, three have purchased guns and gone to the range and taken classes to learn how to use it properly. The thing of it is, is that outside of military folks who use assault rifles in their jobs, I don’t know anyone who owns one. It seems that it’s just the criminals who do and they aren’t going to purchase guns by the law anyway. Once again, the law abiding citizen gets screwed.

  6. Enthalpy says:

Just for the heck of it, lets find out where these guns came from and how they got there in the first place. Presently, we have laws that prevent people from crossing our borders illegally. Presently, we have laws governing the purchase of weapons. Presently, we have laws preventing the importation and distribution of illegal drugs in our country. Presently, we have laws preventing the use of those drugs in our country. Presently we have a war on drugs in our country. Presently, we have armies of Federal and state enforcement officers seeing to it that these laws are obeyed. Presently, our Federal government sees to it that we, the citizens of the United States, do not abuse those people who have crossed our borders illegally (due to the fact that our government has failed to enforce the laws in the first place). Presently, our governments supply health care, legal council, housing, housing loans, education, drivers licenses, and social services of all kinds to these illegal aliens. Presently, our governments are working towards amnesty for those same people so that they have proper care after they retire. And, one state congresswoman from Mass. is working to provide the vote for them in her state. We have all of these laws, and where have they gotten us?

Our President wants to ban assault weapons. What’s next?

  7. JohnMG says:

……..”But I will not pretend that this is a Mexican responsibility alone,” he said. “A demand for these drugs in the United States is what is helping keep these cartels in business……”

THIS quote from an admitted drug-snorting, dope-smoking, pill-popping community organizer whose stock-in-trade is keeping the populace stirred up for his own nefarious purposes. I wouldn’t follow this SOB to the top of the Empire State Building even if it was to push him off the roof.

    Or how about this one?

…..”I think it’s important for the United States not to tell other countries how to structure their democratic practices and what should be contained in their constitutions,…..”

OK, so get the hell out of Mexico! And while you’re at it, start upholding the Constitution–as written–of the country to which you’ve been elected and to which your oath requires of you to execute. And Barry, in case you have to have it spelled out for you, you’re not supposed to execute the Constitution (as in killing it), you’re supposed to execute the tenets of the document itself.

Can the intentions of this clown be less obvious? I think not!

  8. U NO HOO says:

“”I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, PRESERVE, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.””

    ‘Nuff sed?

  9. Confucius says:

America also has an appetite for oil, but I don’t see anyone smuggling that in by gunpoint.

  10. David says:

I continue to believe that we can respect and honor the Second Amendment right in our Constitution — the rights of sportsmen and hunters and homeowners that want to keep their families safe — to lawfully bear arms, while dealing with assault weapons that, as we know here in Mexico, are used to fuel violence..

You know, I’m no “Constitutional Law Professor” but I don’t remember reading anything about hunting or personal property protection in the 2nd amendment. I am pretty sure that the only issue really considered is the security of a free state. Perhaps Obama’s distastes for that idea has led him to change the text.

  11. Anonymoose says:

Hmmm…….I had been thinking Barry was going to hold off on gun control at least until the after 2010 elections, as the ’94 ban contributed a lot to the change in Congress, but I guess he just can’t resist. It doesn’t help the media is jumping in tune and not caring a wit about the truth.

Never mind that crime hasn’t skyrocketed since the ban lapsed, the economy has had more influence than guns.

Never mind this is a symptom of a larger breakdown in the government in Mexico.

Never mind you can’t buy grenades and rocket launchers here.

Never mind the full auto assault rifles they’re harping about are coming from countries other than the US.

Never mind that no one’s come across hordes of straw purchasers buying guns to ship to Mexico.

Just never mind. Barry will ban guns and somehow that will make it all right. The situation won’t change a bit but the media will start reporting a different tune on cue.

  12. 12 Gauge Rage says:

He couldn’t resist could he? He was just chomping at the bit for any gun control opportunity and now he’s found it. What a lot of gun control idiots fail to realize is that it’s not just guns but the whole Constitution that can be modified or done away with. Every right in the Bill of rights is closely interlocked with the others. The First Amendment is backed up by the Second. The Second Amendment puts teeth into the First and so forth. The Left can say they’ve heard this argument before but it’s true. If you do away with one amendment, how much easier will it be to do the same with the others. BTW, my .22 rifle is all black, semi-auto, and has a ten round magazine. By those definitions it too is considered an assault rifle. I guess I’d better start stockpiling on .22 ammo. Hey, it’s cheap. For now.

  13. BillK says:

    Isn’t it funny?

The media has been running multiple articles just this past week deriding those who are running out to buy guns and ammo fearing new gun control legislation stating that Obama had no interest in it.

    Then we read this.

    Coincidence?

Why do I not quite believe that?

But that “reduce drug demand” part?

Nah, there’s no way to do that, it’s like stopping teens from having sex!

Just decriminalize it – free blow for all!

  14. AmericanIPA says:

What an insipid traitor this man is. He’s actually running around the world telling his hosts at every stop that all of their problems are America’s fault. Half of them probably believed that anyway, but the president trashing his own country? What an embarrassment he is to the American people.

  15. mybrotherkeeper says:

Friends, I must confess I am a bit afraid. I live in an area that could become pretty dangerous. As we all know, the outlaws have no problems getting automatic weapons; such things as money, laws, and government tracers won’t affect them.
Goofy is doing his best to screw up the country so law-abiding people have their hands full just taking care of their kids and grandkids, let alone having the wherewithal to defend themselves against such weapons and criminals.

  16. Rusty Shackleford says:

This ass-clown has really made my day. I was genuinely hoping he’d invoke the ire of the gun-owners of this nation, most of which are very good at gun safety, aware of and obey gun laws and operate under a strict code of non-violence. A self-imposed discipline, to be sure.

But, right of the American people to “keep and bear arms” is of no interpretive character. Not to me, not to millions of other Americans.

Let’s just see….if/when this ban occurs…..just how the gubbmint is planning on taking away the ones we already have. Gonna use your campfire kids there Herr O-bow-ma? Or are you gonna get some muslim terrorists to do it for ya? I don’t have any…but if they come to my house to look, they are going to get a healthy sampling of “civil disobedience” in their nuts.

How about some black teenagers who are simply “trying to make a living”?

Given that he is slowly working toward the obvious, it can’t be long before he gets the civil war he so desperately wants. But, he’ll get more than he bargained for. If he thinks the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is a problem, try it in the streets of the US. Or, is that what he wants? So he can mobilize the military under the pretense that “the people won’t surrender their guns”.

Well, just “press to test” that Barry The Bungler….just you try it.

Remember….uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. And that’s not referring to the big black oaken sailing ship in the harbor. It’s the words that for over 230 years this nation has lived by. I know….it’s “just words” to you but to us, a really huge number of us….they actually mean something and the tea parties were just a warmup.

I hasten to think that the ramping up of more foundation-wrecking on your part has something to do with the unanticipated and large disagreement of conservative Americans who think you’re a Marxist communist idiot who is so surrounded by his own stink that you have no idea just how bad you really smell.

    You’ve never had a job
    You lie about everything
You think you’re smarter than anyone
You have abused your privilege at every turn thus far
You say one thing and do another
You tell others how they should act while ignoring your own words
    You talk down to everyone
You can’t formulate a coherent thought without a cue card.
You have questionable relations, questionable background and well, let’s face it, questionable taste
    You suck at people skills
The only thing that impresses you is…….you
You blame everything on someone else, as would a child
You think that you can do no wrong
You…….and YOU alone then…..will bear the full responsibility of what you’re doing. I don’t care who apologizes for you; Who tries to deflect the blame; Who tries to explain it all away.

    I HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE.

    BARRY

    HUSSEIN

    OBAMA

    YOU!

  17. canary says:

GilaMonster/you are right. It is old news, that Mexico lied about the 90%, and so that makes Obama the biggest liar, or the dumbest president we’ve ever had. And I picked up on Obama recent statement, he wasn’t going for gun control, it was a sure sign, by the habitual liar, that he meant the opposite. Just as his attack on our wounded soldiers and vets, his wife makes a public appearance her new roll will be to lighten the burden of the soldier. So, anytime you hear Obama say something that sounds okay, look for the opposite to be happening.
Mexico and Obama lying to say it’s our fault.
Yet, Mexico did nothing to control their own cartel, drove their own people over our borders. Don’t forget the books and vidios Mexico gave their people, on surviving the crossing, and teaching them American constitutional rights, for example how to say in English. “Unless you have a warrant, we do not have to open our door. Go away.” The vidio shows the Mexicans huddled in fear, with uniformed police officers with nightsticks banging on doors.

Exerpts from something gun expert Jefferson Spivey wrote
“… Is anybody surprised that Auturo Sarukhan, the Mexican ambassador to the United States , is going to defend his claim and not go along with the Liberal Democrats in the US ? I think we all can see through his agenda. What a laugh! We all really think that these politicians are honest and forthright. The Mexican Government is a US puppet. Under pressure from the American left Auturo will say anything he is told to say. The Mexican Government and the present US Government are both anti-gun and we all know it. Oh yeah, we the people are just going to believe anything they tell us. If we are dealing with a criminal government here in the good ol US of A, what does anyone thing we are dealing with in Mexico ? …

The dominant weapons used by the Mexican cartel are obvious, by the news photographs, AK-47’s. The origin of this weapon is the Soviet Union… then later, China and the Middle-East. The AK-47 is the most numerous model of any weapon in the world; just over a billion have been created. Sure there are a few good ‘ol Colts, Rugers, and Smith & Wesson being twirled about by would-be-cowboys in Mexico , but come on Hillary, we know your agenda, especially when it comes to guns. …As the saying goes “There is nothing more destructive than ignorance in action.” Hillary! Please find another job.

  18. joeblough says:

He says whatever smooths the way toward achieving his goal — a full government takeover of the US.

If Mexico is prepared to provide him with an excuse, that’s just fine for him. He’s prepared to be flexible and adapt as opportunities arise .

  19. Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

    1) He refused to criticize the leaders of Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, who have taken measures to change their constitutions to extend their holds on power.

    2) “I think it’s important for the United States not to tell other countries how to structure their democratic practices….

So then according to statement 2, what is accomplished by statement 1 is a democratic practice in Barry’s mind? Why am I not surprised?

  20. canary says:

joeblough/He says whatever smooths the way toward achieving his goal — a full government takeover of the US.

On a form he filled out to run for Senator he marked he was against even the manufacturing guns.

What kind of American would ever let a renagade lawless country dictate how to run America? First they tell us to raise their people. Now, both Mexican and American Presidents want all the guns in Mexico, but none in the U.S.

What kind of President would disarm us, with terrorists living next door and inside our country. Obama’s wants all the guns so there are no more elections.

Why else was his number 1 goal in the stimulous to update Washington D.C. federal buildings. Obamination forgets America is a One Nation under God.
He has taken our One Nation. He has taken away our one God, and now he wants all our arms.

In the words from Patrick Henry
“An appeal to arms and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us!”

  21. canary says:

The Constitution does not itself create the offense; it only restricts the definition and permits Congress to create the offense. The crime is prohibited by legislation passed by Congress. Therefore the United States Code at 18 U.S.C. § 2381 states “whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.” The requirement of testimony of two witnesses was inherited from the British Treason Act 1695 (Since 1945, however, this has been abolished in British law and treason cases are now subject to the same rules of evidence and procedure as a murder trial).

I witness our President of the U.S. is aiding our armed enemies.

  22. VMAN says:

I don’t see the second amendment as something that protects sportsman, hunters or even people who want to protect their home but as a vehicle to protect the American citizenry from would be tin horn dictators that would strip us of every right we have.

  23. jrmcdonald says:

The Taurus gun company of Brasil produces excellent weapons at a cost well below most American companys. This fact is known by most gun owners- hence not the MSM or Obama.

  24. canary says:

Any gun with a clip is an assault weapon in Obama’s view.

  25. canary says:

Just wait til our Mexican cartel finds out we don’t have guns. Wait til Al-quaida walk out their doors one day. McVeigh didn’t use a gun; two fuses.
Obama isn’t insane, he’s got it all planned out. He hate America, loves communist countries, which is where he should be living in the first place. Obama is a traitor.

  26. curvyred says:

And what of the beheadings, and other torture that the cartels use – should they just go ahead and ban knives as well?
