Obama Wasted $3.6M On Fiscal Cliff Statement

From the Weekly Standard:

Back to Vacation: Obama Takes Midnight Flight to Hawaii

Round-trip cost of president’s return trip: $3.6 million.

After Congress agreed temporarily to avert the "fiscal cliff" last night, President Barack Obama hailed the deal in brief remarks delivered from the White House, and then headed to Air Force One to take a midnight flight to Hawaii. Obama had left his family days earlier to return to Washington to deal with the "fiscal cliff."

Obama "ended a seven-minute statement in the Press Briefing Room starting at about 11:27 p.m.," according to the pool report. "Dressed only in a blue suit, he walked across the South Lawn to board Marine One at 11:40 p.m."

Seven minutes.

By the way, we thought Obama was proud of being high tech? Why couldn’t he make his statement from Hawaii by telephone or by remote camera? Even Skype?

The pool report adds, "Marine One touched down at Andrews Air Force Base at 11:54 p.m. POTUS, still in a dark gray suit and light blue tie, walked quickly to Air Force One and dashed up the stairs. Valerie Jarrett, Jay Carney and Alyssa Mastromonaco also are on board tonight. At 12:01 a.m., Air Force One is rolling."

But the American tax payer paid a price for Obama’s return.

The cost of flying Air Force One from Andrews Air Force Base to Hawaii, MSNBC reports this morning is, $1.8 million. That means the total round-trip cost of President Obama’s return trip to Washington from his Hawaii vacation was at least $3.6 million.

So Obama spent (at least) $3.6 million dollars to return temporarily to DC from Hawaii, in order to make his statement on the ‘fiscal cliff’ deal. When he could have easily made his statement from Hawaii. But he wanted to show the taxpayers how concerned he is about wasting money.

His public remarks lasted all of seven minutes. $3.6 million divided by 7 is $514,000 a minute. Sometimes actions really do speak louder than words.

"The President and First Family do not have any scheduled public events during their time in Hawai’i," according to the White House.

The president is expected to land in Honolulu at 5:15 a.m. local time. He has yet to sign the bill, which has now passed the Senate and House, to avert temporarily the "fiscal cliff."

Don’t worry. Obama has since signed the historic document via autopen.

Vice President Joe Biden will also be out of town today.

"The Vice President will be in Wilmington, Delaware. There are no public events scheduled," the White House’s schedule for Biden reads.

There’s no word on when Obama and Biden will return to Washington.

They both deserve a very long vacation after so much hard work.

Note to “O”, next time just FedEx the teleprompter. That’s what the middle class taxpayers would do.

In the pre-1965 American South we used to have a word for this kind of flashy and wasteful behavior.

However, such language is considered bad taste today (more’s the pity).

The vacation was already estimated to cost 5 million dollars for flying “the beast” limo to Hawaii in a separate plane. There is the Obama’s personal photo and production crew.

If you ask me it, it was just to get away from the family as he blames being an only child for those needs to get away or spend time alone in an office.

Canary, I could be wrong, but don’t they double-team all flights & vehicles to match most contingencys? If true,
that would more than double our cost. Plus the cost of the detail remaining in Hawaii to cover the wife & children of the King. I’m not going to try to factor in the drugs, booze, women and surf-board waxing that is going on.
This is simpley out of control.

Wirenut, you are right. So, that would mean at least a 3rd plane on his first family vacation to Hawaii with his personal white house film crew and WH back-drop equipment and teleprompters.

Many media reports are on Michelle’s $250,000 wardrobe for the 3 week vacation. That’s up from $250,000 a year of his salary to blow for 3 weeks.

And to think at the same time he swore he’d punish families who live on $250,000 a year.
