Obamas Ape FDR With ‘Victory Garden’

From an awed New York Times:

Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden

By MARIAN BURROS

March 19, 2009

WASHINGTON — On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.

While the organic garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and formal dinners, its most important role, Mrs. Obama said, will be to educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at time when obesity has become a national concern.

In an interview in her office, Mrs. Obama said, “My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.”

Twenty-three fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington will help her dig up the soil for the 1,100-square-foot plot in a spot visible to passers-by on E Street. (It’s just below the Obama girls’ swing set.) Students from the school, which has had a garden since 2001, will also help plant, harvest and cook the vegetables, berries and herbs

Whether there would be a White House garden has been more than a matter of landscaping. It’s taken on political and environmental symbolism as the Obamas have been lobbied for months by advocates who believe that growing more food locally could lead to healthier eating and lessen reliance on huge industrial farms that use more oil for transportation and chemicals for fertilizer…

The Obamas will feed their love of Mexican food with cilantro, tomatilloes and hot peppers. Lettuces will include red romaine, green oak leaf, butterhead, red leaf and galactic. There will be spinach, chard, collards and black kale. For desserts, there will be a patch of berries. And herbs will include some more unusual varieties, like anise hyssop and Thai basil. A White House carpenter who is a beekeeper will tend two hives for honey.

Total cost for the seeds, mulch, etc., is $200.

The plots will be in raised beds fertilized with White House compost, crab meal from the Chesapeake Bay, lime and green sand. Ladybugs and praying mantises will help control harmful bugs.

Cristeta Comerford, the White House’s executive chef, is eager to plan menus around the garden, and Bill Yosses, the pastry chef, is looking forward to berry season.

Sam Kass, an assistant White House chef who prepared healthful meals for the Obama family in Chicago and is an advocate of local food, will oversee the garden. The White House grounds crew and kitchen staff will do most of the work, but other White House staff members have volunteered

Mrs. Obama, who said that she never had a vegetable garden before, said the idea for it came from her experiences as a working mother trying to feed her daughters, Malia and Sasha, a good diet. Eating out three times a week, ordering a pizza, having a sandwich for dinner took it’s toll. The children’s pediatrician told her she needed to be thinking about nutrition…

Of course the Obamas would never use such a word as ‘victory.’

But even so, aren’t the Obamas taking their nostalgia for the Great Depression era a little too far?

Can’t we have some homages to Stalin’s ‘Five Year Plan’ or Mao’s ‘Great Leap Forward’ now and then, just for a little variety?

After all, they were good communists, too.

Twenty-three fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington will help her dig up the soil for the 1,100-square-foot plot in a spot visible to passers-by on E Street…

Students from the school… will also help plant, harvest and cook the vegetables, berries and herbs…

The White House grounds crew and kitchen staff will do most of the work, but other White House staff members have volunteered [sic]…

Is this not a microcosm of the Obama way of doing things?

Exploiting kids, “volunteers” — and all for “show.”

Not unlike Hitler, Stalin, Mao and other great dictators in the past.

(By the way, Mr. Hitler had an organic garden – run by Martin Bormann. He also kept bees.)

Mrs. Obama, who said that she never had a vegetable garden before, said the idea for it came from her experiences as a working mother trying to feed her daughters, Malia and Sasha, a good diet.

Er, how old are Malia and Sasha?

What took Mrs. Obama so long to getting around to starting a garden?

She certainly had the room (and the time) when they were living in their Hyde Park mansion.

But perhaps she didn’t care about doing PR stunts back then.

[T]he Obamas have been lobbied for months by advocates who believe that growing more food locally could lead to healthier eating and lessen reliance on huge industrial farms that use more oil for transportation and chemicals for fertilizer.

Have these lobbyists never heard of Whole Foods — the single most successful grocery store in the country?

(Which is owned and run by a former "democratic socialist,” who has since become an “anti-union free market libertarian.”)

Ladybugs and praying mantises will help control harmful bugs.

Yes, this is what every amateur gardener thinks when they first start out.

Alas, it seldom works out that way.

(Thanks to Pdsand for the heads up.)

Obamas to Plant Garden on White House Lawn

For more than a decade, food activists have rallied, cajoled, even pleaded for a garden on the White House lawn. Now they’re finally going to get it.”

The world having been thoroughly saved within the first 100 days, Obama is now going to retire to gardening?

An absolute bargain for the taxpayers!! And I suppose the Obama’s will be doing all the labor too, right?

That arugula-romaine salad will be exquisite with the Kobe beef main course (flown in fresh weekly from Japan naturally). ;o)

As Michelle Malkin has noted, we are discovering a second talent possessed by the Obamy’s (the first is bald-faced lying)….Kabuki Theatre.

I grew up on a farm. I spent my summer days weeding, picking beans, helping my mama can and freeze produce.

I want to see the pictures of the first lady weeding the lettuce with a big ol’ straw hat on her head…and what’s left of her manicure afterward.

It won’t be much of a garden for a $200 investment – more like a grade-school science project- and probably last about as long.

Bet the WH gardener is as happy as punch to have this nonsense added to his list of chores!

Probably the closest those two “precious” princesses get to the garden is to see the gardeners raking and weeding while they swing on their new swing set. Or maybe while watching their new dog dig up all the new seedlings for the umpteenth time.

For a good example of how the public is eating this BS up, there’s long been a “petition” to get the Obamas to plant a “victory garden” on Facebook:

Despite the many challenges facing our nation as he prepares to take office, one simple step that President-Elect Obama can do that can be implemented with relative speed and ease is the creation of a White House vegetable garden. As Michael Pollan urged last month in the New York Times, we, the members of this group, call on you to create a five acre organic fruit and vegetable garden on the White House grounds by replacing some of the existing south facing lawn. The symbolic power of this step will demonstrate our nation’s commitment to the environment and to improving the nutrition of the American people. Increasing consumption of local, organic fruits and vegetables across this nation can help to reduce our use of fossil fuels and improve the health and well-being of families across the country. A shift in policy in this area has the ability to impact many spheres of our society and the world. By starting at the White House, the President has the opportunity to demonstrate that leadership in this area will start with the first family.

I honestly have no faith in the future of the country any more.

I don’t want to be depressed, but I see no light at the end of the tunnel – none.

Not when the teeming masses of brainless youth with the vote eat this #$@! up.

What I find interesting is what they are going to use for fertilizer?

For 5 acres they are going to have to have a lot of organic cow “stuff”.

Oh wait, they have told us the cows have to go! No more meat.

I mean the cows produce too much methane gas. And we all know what that does…Causes globle warming!

Oh wait again, I forgot…silly me! He’ll just use all that BS he hands out during his teleprompter love fests!

      There now. Problem solved!

  6. Confucius says:

Terrific. Someplace to put all the manure.

But really, don’t these people have anything else better to do than garden, bowl and shove disabled kids around? Like fixing the economy or something?

You know, a garden never fixed a credit crisis.

Well, he’s already past his Lincoln phase – on to FDR! Look for a cigarette holder any day…

  8. wardmama4 says:

The children’s pediatrician told her she needed to be thinking about nutrition

Oh my aching sides – like the Queen of Mean has ever cooked a meal for those kids in her life.

It was probably a ‘report’ from the pediatrician sent home with the kid’s nanny directed to the cook.

Yeah right – I can see the Queen of Mean out there doing a damn thing with that garden – maybe once pointing at it to a bunch of visiting kids and surely a photo spread in People. Other than that – it is just like The One ™ and the Queen of Mean – another shallow, meaningless lie meant to make them appear to be just like everyone else.

If I wanted to watch a fake portraying the President I could just slip a West Wing dvd in – and at least they had some meaningful dialogue once in a while.

BTW – Colonel – I can’t wait to he gets to his Nixon phase and We The People can have another good Impeachment!

Volunteer slavery. the same Whole Foods just all over national news most deadly spider found in their foods? from Brazil. Why didn’t private school classmates do the slave work for Michelloho.
And where is the tobacco fields so Obombya won’t pay for his cigerettes.
Under the Obombya regine this will become the norm. Sunrise to Sunset.
Obambeech should let the kiddies grow in their own gardens.

Whole Foods finds worlds deadliest spider. Updates they killed it so it couldn’t be examinined, won’t give it’s dead body to the scientists either.

Song for Obamabeech’s new slaves. 1993 Chain of Fools song. Guess Aretha Franklin didn’t know the significance of her song.

Chain of Fools – Song Lyrics
    Chain, chain, chain,
    Chain, chain, chain,
Chain, chain, chain yeah, chain of fools

For five long years, I thought you were my man
But I found out, I’m just a link in your chain
You got me where you want me
I ain’t nothing but your fool
You treated me mean oh babe you treated me cruel

Chain, chain, chain, chain of fools

Now every chain, has got a weak link
I might be weak child, oh but I’ll give you strength

Now you tell me to leave you alone
My papa said come on home
My doctor said take it easy
But your lovin is much too strong
I’m welded to your chain, chain, chain

Chain, chain, chain, chain, chain, chain
Chain, chain, chain yeah, chain of fools

One of these mornings that chain is gonna break
But up until then, I’m gonna take all I can take
Chain, chain, chain, chain, chain, chain
Chain, chain, chain yeah, chain of fools

Chain chain chain, chain, chain, chain
Chain chain chain yeah, chain of fools

    Chain chain chain

Too Bad they can’t grow some “Hope” and “Change”. They pissed away the last bushel of Hope and Change. Maybe when the inner cities burn Barry can have a “Fireside” chat with the minions. Oh goody…….can’t wait for the Special Olympics talk.

  12. jobeth says:

    My favorite all telling quote.

“Mrs. Obama said, “My hope is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.”

Bet she hopes once that takes place they can “re-educate” us in other areas.

And if we don’t learn from our government educated children, then our government educated children will be taught to report our “sins” so we can be transfered to a re-education camp. Probably via freight cars.

Where has that been done before…ummm? Anyone?

The more they say and do the more they reveal their true agenda.

    It’s sickening.

Jobeth – you might want to watch – Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) 2007 Best Foreign Film (although you’d never know that from the msm) about the East German Stasi. Great movie and very chilling on exactly what happens in ‘those’ societies.
