Obama’s Army Now Trotting Old Glory

From Mr. Obama’s perpetual campaign site, Organizing for America:

On the Health Insurance Reform Now Bus Tour: Salt Lake

By Natalie Foster, Democratic National Committee’s New Media Director – Sep 17th, 2009

Wheels down in Salt Lake City. I rarely get out from behind my computer and I’m excited to leave DC and meet incredible OFA supporters, the backbone of our fight for health reform.

Rusty greets me at the baggage claim. Rusty’s new to Salt Lake – but he’s one of the thousands of people who volunteered countless hours to help elect Barack Obama. He tells me about his year in Salt Lake, looking for work, as we drive to the event.

We get to Sugarhouse Park nearly an hour and a half before the event starts, but hundreds of people are already making their way across the grass to the site of the rally.

It’s a beautiful day and spirits are high. The crowd is a good mix of young people, seniors with lawn chairs, kids with soccer balls and families with dogs in tow. OFA volunteers are combing the crowd with clip boards, inviting folks to sign up and get further involved.

The bus roars up, honking, and the event starts. The speakers hop off, waving, and line the stage. After the State Director, Nikki Norton, welcomes folks she turns it over to Steve Hatch. Steve is a small business owner of a chocolate shop with medical concerns of his own.

Kristin Garbett – one of OFA’s volunteer community organizers in Salt Lake City and a mother of five – tells her story of action and conviction, and encourages folks to get involved.

State Senator Karen Mayne then speaks from the heart:

Millions are uninsured, we need national health reform, and we need it now. I’m a state senator and I’m working for reform…we need to conquer this together. We need to be brave, [our leaders] need to be brave, our leaders need to be wise and they should not be afraid. Together we can get this done.

Jeremy Bird, OFA’s Deputy Director, takes the mic and gets the crowd going by reminding everyone how far we’ve come.

He asks the crowd to whip out their cell phones and plug in the numbers of Utah Senators Orrin Hatch and Robert Bennett, as well as the general number for the House of Representatives. Pens and cell phones are out, pledging to call.

The rally ends on a high note as the beautiful Salt Lake sunset fades into twilight. People stay and chat late into the night about next steps. On to Vegas.

It’s odd, but we seem to recall that Mr. Obama eschewed wearing an American flag pin in his lapel. As we noted at the time, the great man announced:

“You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin,” Obama said. “Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest.

“Instead,” he said, “I’m going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testimony to my patriotism.”

Of course Mr. Obama did finally break down and don a flag pin when he had to campaign before the hicks in places like West Virginia. But everyone knew he didn’t really mean it.

But his campaign followed suit, and his rallies were conspicuous for their lack of American flags and any other hateful trappings of jingoism, such as the Pledge Of Allegiance.

And yet now he and his astroturf army are literally wrapping themselves in the flag – even pledging allegiance to it – in their desperate attempt to appear concerned about the fate of our nation.

Somehow we are reminded of how Mr. Stalin literally ‘got religion’ once the Hitler betrayed him and invaded the Soviet Union.

Caricature of "Stalin a great friend of religion", when churches were allowed to be opened during World War II.

All of a sudden the Communist Party decided that atheism might not cut it, and they opened up all of the churches – but only for the duration of the war.

Of course any similarity between those times and now is merely a coincidence.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think I only saw white people in this picture at the gathering for Czero’s health care monstrosity. There were more ethnic groups represented at the DC Tea Party that I was lucky enough to attend last weekend….not to mention a LOT more flags being waved around!

So I suppose these oafs will go to DC and have a rally. Of course the government media will tun a few thousand into millions. Oh by the way Pianogirl I do see a few token people of color in the crowd along with the other paid attendees. I say paid because the stimulus money has to go somewhere.

  3. Why shouldn’t they wave the flag? It’s theirs’ now. They won it.

We are now the free market revolutionaries!
