Obama’s SOTU Speech – Reconnecting

From his fulltime apologists at the Associated Press:

Obama’s State of the Union agenda: Yes, I get it

By Ben Feller, Associated Press Writer Sat Jan 23

WASHINGTON – Seizing a chance to reconnect, President Barack Obama will use his first State of the Union address to try to persuade the people of a frustrated nation that he’s on their side, with a familiar sounding agenda recast to relate better to everyday struggles

"Obviously you want to write a speech in a way that is interesting enough that people want to listen, and that leaves them feeling a sense of momentum and progress," senior Obama adviser David Axelrod told The Associated Press. "But these are serious times. I don’t think this is a time for rhetorical flights of fancy."

What to expect in the speech, which comes during a rocky period for Obama? …

It all points to the message Obama wants to convey: Yes, I get it.

Obama is emerging from a year in Washington that, he now says, has left the public with a sense of "remoteness and detachment" from what he’s been trying to do.

The president says his agenda is not about him. But in important ways, this speech will be

To regain his footing, Obama is putting himself on the side of the people. He’s challenging special interests on health care and banking. He’s reminding people that while he got an economic stimulus plan through, he bailed out Wall Street and the auto industry only by necessity…

Those familiar with the address say it reflects Obama’s tendency toward consistency and his opposition to a laundry list of programs. "It’s not going to be a series of disjointed offerings, poll-tested offerings," Axelrod said. "It’s going to be a narrative about where he wants to lead, and why, and for whom."

Obama gave his speechwriters an outline of what he wanted, and has exchanged drafts. He was spending more time on it over the weekend, and will keep doing so until he steps before a struggling nation on Wednesday night.

Perhaps Mr. Obama’s speechwriter, David Axelrod, should reflect on Hemingway, who said he always strove in his writing to say ‘one true thing.’

— But what are we thinking? Of course that will never happen.

If Mr. Obama ever told the American public what he really wants for our country they would ride him out of town on a rail.

And speaking of Mr. Obama’s overweening mendacity:

Obama is emerging from a year in Washington that, he now says, has left the public with a sense of "remoteness and detachment" from what he’s been trying to do.

Lest we forget, Mr. Obama used to tell anyone who disagreed with him to shut up and sit down. (See the clip above and Mr. Obama’s comment here.)

That might have had something to do with the public’s sense of his "remoteness and detachment" from them.

The blame game again. As he sees it, I’m just not getting it and therefore, like a tourist who doesn’t speak English, he thinks I’ll understand it better if he YELLS at me.

Go blow it out your _____!

    Here it comes.

      Whoa, LD!!

After I stopped laughing I re-read your post and started laughing all over again. I thought you hade typed muslim foreskin. I’ve got to start wearing my glasses all the time, I guess. ;-))

You saw what you saw and that’s good enough for me.
      Sucks gettin’ older, eh bro?

    • JohnMG says:

Yeah, but I’m not longing for the alternative yet.

      Actually, I wouldn’t go back to this morning, much less 20 years. If you live it well you should only have to live it once. If I changed something I might screw it up worse than I did the first time around. ;-}

It did remind me of the old “Why do lawyers wear neckties?” joke. You remember that one?

Hm, sounds similar to a lot of newspaper letters-to-the-editor I’m reading lately.

I hear smEllie bLight is available for speechwriting.

Besides, I’d say the high voting turn-out in Massachusett’s is a pretty good indicator that the people are united and engaged against what Nerobama is after.

    • jobeth says:

He could only wish that the people were left with “a sense of ‘remoteness and detachment’ ” That was what he was hoping for from the beginning.

You said “Besides, I’d say the high voting turn-out in Massachusett’s is a pretty good indicator that the people are united and engaged against what Nerobama is after.”

      Bingo!

Try as he might there is no way the American people can be shut up as he wants. We are fighters when we are attacked. From without…OR from within.

    • proreason says:

Remote is what I do the second he comes on TV.

Detach is what I’d like to see happen to his head.

  5. mr_bill says:

Another Obama speech in which he plans to tell us he’s fighting for the ‘little guy’ and tell us what’s good for us (b/c we’re too stupid to know), yawn. Isn’t this a re-run?

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

Yeah, what’s next? He’s gonna start working his way up the country music charts?

(The CMA awards are just around the corner, so don’t be surprised—-“And the winner is Barry “Hayseed” Obama, with ‘I Just Need Ta Work It Out, Y’all’ “)

(piped in applause…zoom in on barry with boots/buckle and hat)

      (You get the picture)

    • jobeth says:

Now Rusty…tsk, tsk…Why are you insulting CMAs like that? lol

Seriously…I doubt very much many of the CMA participants would agree with awarding Obalmy with anything short of a ticket to his ancestral homeland of Kenya.

    • ptat says:

I guess he will mention some hunting and drinking stories this time around and how he and Michelle are looking forward to going to Daytona this year. He may even try some Negro dialect! Nothing like a desperate elitist! (Hilary and her shots of whiskey, Negro dialect, Kerry and “where can I get me a hunting license?”)

    • JohnMG says:

He’ll show up at the CMA presentation to pick up his ‘entertainer of the year’ award in a pair of Tony Lama’s and some Wranglers, and sporting a Resistol. You won’t be able to tell him from George Strait……..except that he’ll be a little darker-skinned and won’t have a southern drawl–unless he wants one.

Always busy trying to make an impression.

… Obama will use his first State of the Union address to try to persuade the people of a frustrated nation that he’s on their side …

An interesting turn of phrase that, “he’s on their side“.

As distinct from … what? He’s against them? Indifferent to them? Trying to bankrupt and enslave them? Favors the interests of their enemies?

It’s always a matter of persuasion with the progressives/liberals/left. It’s never a matter of simple observation of what they do and what results are produced. Never a case of, “Well, look what I brought you, you like it?”. It’s always a matter of persuasion.

Somebody has got to give this Obama guy a remedial course in basic American folk culture. Really. He spent a few years in school and afterward hanging out with a bunch of people who make their living by bamboozling the urban welfare class, a tiny and very atypical minority, and so now he thinks he knows something about the American people. Give me a break!

I think he never noticed that New Hampshire’s motto is “Live Free or Die”, or that Oklahoma was traditionally referred to as the “Show Me” state.

I don’t think that he actually knows that the granite realism of the wagon train days is still ingrained in the culture — or for that matter that the wagon trains really actually were conducted by the people — you know, those guys the lefties are always talking about but almost never seem to know personally, or like very much.

Maybe it looks good on paper to describe the American settlement of the west as some sort of extension of European vs 3rd world imperialism, and it plays well in sophmoric lefty bull sessions.

It doesn’t play so well with the people who are the direct descendants of the people that actually went west looking for a place to make home, and freedom.

And it doesn’t play well with people who have been trained for generations to believe their own eyes and use their own head and to believe that reality tends to be unforgiving if its laws are ignored. Or as an actual American once put it to me, “you can hope in one hand and crap in the other, and see which hand fills up first!

    Persuasion, persuasion, persuasion …

Everything that this joker says in public should be immediately answered with the words “Show Me !

That is, when the answer isn’t “You Lie !

    • proreason says:

“An interesting turn of phrase that, “he’s on their side“.

      A direct hit.

I never buy something that somebody has worked very very hard to sell me. Nothing is better proof that I don’t need it, and it will probably cause more harm than good.

I don’t mind some data about a product, even some testimonials, but the longer the sales person goes on, the less interested I become.

Somebody tried to sell me municipal bonds the other day for Travis County is Texas which is the seat of government in Texas. The yield was 3% for 2 years which is nearly twice what you can get anywhere else for that time period. I told the guy to send me some information, which I read. The bonds were for a water district with 253 customers, and the financial statement said they didn’t make enough revenue to cover the debt service next year, so I emailed the guy and told him there were some problems with the issue. (BTW, a 10 minute search indicated the bonds were a less then 1% outlyer for the yeld). The guy then went into super sales mode and began explaining that I didn’t know how to read the statement, and how safe the bonds are despite the obvious fact the water district is bankrupt.

When Obamy gets shit-canned, he can sell bonds.

    • JohnMG says:

…..”or that Oklahoma was traditionally referred to as the “Show Me” state…..”

      Sorry, joe, but ya got that one wrong. Quote from Congressman Willard Vandiver; “I come from a state that grows corn and cotton and cockleburrs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I’m from Missouri–you’ve got to Show Me. Says Show-Me right on our license plates. ;-}

But I agree with your sentiments.

    • joeblough says:

      Great Scott!

You’re right. I got it wrong. It is Missouri.

      Imagine my embarrassment.

I plead on my own behalf that I was close, Oklahoma is right next door. That BS out of the way, thanks for the correction.

Nonetheless, “Show Me” is still the right thing to say to jiving Obama.

  9. Tater Salad says:

Obama to “Reconnect”…………..won’t happen and here’s why:

    So, Let’s Recap

    1. The American people elect a black president with a total of 142 days experience as a US Senator from the most politically corrupt state (city) in America whose governors have been ousted from office.

The President’s first official act is to order the close of Gitmo and make sure

terrorists civil rights are not violated.

    (honest mistake?)

    2. The U.S. Congress rushes to confirm a black Attorney General, Eric Holder, whose law firm we later find out represents seventeen Gitmo Terrorists.

    (An honest mistake?!)

    3. The CIA Boss appointee, Leon Panetta, has absolutely no experience, has a daughter Linda, we find out, who is a true radical anti-American activist and a supporter of all the Anti-American regimes in the western hemisphere. (There were socio-economic factors involved!)

    4. We got the second most corrupt American woman (Pelosi is #1) as Secretary of State; bought and paid for. (You can put lipstick on a pig, but it still stinks!)

    5. We got a Tax Cheat for Treasury Secretary who did not properly file his own taxes for 12 years.

    (He misspoke!)

    6. A Commerce Secretary nominee who withdrew due to corruption charges.

    (Another honest mistake???)

    7. A Tax cheat nominee for Chief Performance Officer who withdrew under charges.

    (Hmmm…. another screw-up?)

    8. A Labor Secretary nominee who withdrew under charges of unethical conduct.

(Ok, maybe this person was just plain stupid.)

    9. A Secretary HHS nominee (Daschle) who withdrew under charges of cheating on his taxes.

(I’m running out of excuses for these idiots!!)

    10. Multiple appointments of former lobbyists after an absolute campaign statement that no lobbyists would be appointed.

(Dear God, I am getting a headache!)

All this occurred just during the first three weeks. . . but who’s counting?

America is being run by the modern-day Three Stooges ; Barry, Nancy and Harry and they are still trying to define stimulus…”it’s spending!!!”

The congress passes the $800,000,000,000 (that’s $800 billion) pork-loaded spending bill where the government gives you a smidgen of your tax dollars ($13 per week), making you feel so good about yourself [stimulated], that you want to run out to Wal-Mart and buy a new Chinese-made HDTV and go home and watch Telemundo!

    Only with the Liberals…

    Pray for our country.

Here’s the good news though – Obama took Air Force One to Denver to sign the stimulus package, wasting as much as 10,000 gallons of fuel OR 24 JOBS FOR ONE YEAR.

Don’t you just love this hypocrite?

Speaking of praying, Obama has now been president for seven months and yet he & wife (first lady) Michelle, the Christian family they claim to be, have not attended church since the inauguration.

    He must miss Reverend Wright!

In these times ‘I’ll keep my God, my freedom, my gun and my money.

Anyone that supports this insanity can keep

    “THE CHANGE”..

  10. JohnMG says:

    …..”Obama to “Reconnect…..”

Assumes, of course, that he connected in the first place. Naturally he has a fall-back comment and I suppose if you were to parse the statement (a la Billy-Jeff) he could always claim he was mis-understood. What he really means is he’s going to re-CON the public. Obviously the first con worked out soooooooo well.

Such logic can only come from someone who has undergone a “frontal Obama-ny”!

    • Liberals Demise says:

“What he really means is he’s going to re-CON the public.”

John….you put the Recon in “re-CON” ……. very clever Marine!!

  11. jobeth says:

Gibs is running interference for Obama on FoxNews January 24, for Obalmy’s SOTU speech.

You know…The “Here’s what we want you to hear in the upcoming speech…and thus think . Okay now go back to sleep America.” routine.

Same old tone deaf stuff…totally off mark…but with with a few really striking statements if you listen closely. Gibbs really looks uncomfortable..

I found his efforts at explaining a speech that hasn’t even been given, truly funny. lol

So we need someone to explain the SOTU first? It must be either full of lies OR like the Bail outs and Health care bills..too convoluted to understand…My bet is on both.

Besides all the normal nonsense coming from this WH, my big question is why even bother Bobby?

I thought FoxNews wasn’t a news channel, and all of us who watch/listen are probably ‘astroturfing’ tea bagging possible terrorists anyway. Thus of no importance.

If you recall…Obalmy and his little minions told us not to tune into Fox (or we would be part of the unwashed masses he dismisses).

    Again, Bobby boy….Why bother.

I KNOW you aren’t running scared now are you? You do looked a bit nervous there. In fact I dould swear there were times you were praying people would just ‘believe’.

Could it be you were worried about the gun owning, Bible toters and their vote.?..Nawh….

BTW…he even used the words “Common sense”….I wonder where that word came from…Sarah…

    • U NO HOO says:

Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize before peace so I guess that’s the way things go now. Reminds of a book, Alice in Wonderland, Gibbs the madhatter, words mean what I say, or was it 1984 or Animal farm…

      Doesn’t really matter.

    • tranquil.night says:

“So we need someone to explain the SOTU first? It must be either full of lies OR like the Bail outs and Health care bills..too convoluted to understand…My bet is on both.”

Jo, we have no idea what we’re in for starting with the SOTU. Gibbs says its about “jobs” and I hear his budget is supposed to be very “urban centric,” but with the hints he dropped last week I’m guessing this is about targeting the “origins of our economic situation” – bankers. Financial law is very complex and draining for the average American’s attention span. as they’re probably more pissed than anything at the banking system and so inclined to support sweeping regulation. To generate or regain support – to “reconnect” – Marxists always redirect populist outrage from them to some enemy, and during economic hardship public enemy #1 is always the fatcat bankers. How convenient is it that Goldman Sachs’ obscene behavior, profits, and bonuses seem more than willing to publicly represent the face of that excess. Maybe, along with Bernanke and Geithner – all of whom even have the Left after them – they’ll go down in the name of “reform”?

Regarding the reform, if Bernanke bites the dust then “Too Big to Fail” goes with him and Geithner’s now warning Wall St. with him. Many wonder if Barry will renominate Paul Volcker in an attempt to salvage fiscal credibility and realign with the base while appearing moderate (but can a former Fed Chairman be reppointed? Do the rules matter at this point?) Of course fiscal credibility to a liberal means taxes, and the new banking legislation will be chalk full of them, along with being longer and more confusing than HealthCare, more devastating to Wall Street, lending and housing (thus construction, etc etc). It will of course probably be another backdoor take-over of those big banks that didn’t fall to TARP; nevertheless it will pass with bipartisan support because of Washington elites under the guise of ‘maverick centrists.’ He’ll add fuel to the recent ruling on the McCain-Feingold Bill, probably using spin similar to what Alec Baldwin says :

“Do you really want the sociopaths from AIG, Wall Street trading firms and bailed out banks, who have driven the US economy off a cliff, to have an insurmountable war chest with which to campaign for candidates of their choice?” Come on Alec, as opposed to the Hollywood and media war chests? Get serious.

Last time I checked, McCain (along with Volcker) specifically supported reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act, which has to do with banks dealing in securities. The important thing to know is that because it was repealed, our system may actually be weathering the collapse better because banks are able to absorb toxic assets.

But it’s impossible to get into this without spending hours and losing focus. Obama knows it, so it’s very easy to make a rational case for very bad regulation. That’s what I’m expecting this SOTU.

  12. U NO HOO says:

The era of “The era of big government is over” is over.

President Obama: I feel that you are a pain.

    • JohnMG says:

Folks, you are really helping me to maintain my sanity through all this. I think it would be a good thing for the response to this coming charade (SOTU address) be given by a committee of bloggers from S & L, who would, with characteristic tongue-in-cheek, humorous sarcasm, refute the Moron point by point. Not only would the truth go before the public, but the thoughts and feelings of countless thousands would be given voice.

Now THAT would be speaking truth to power.

    • jobeth says:

      u no hoo,

      Very cleaver…lol

  13. BigOil says:

Barry Barack Hussein Soetoro Obama the global citizen wants to reconnect with Americans…Aha.

His only true connections are with the likes of Frank Marshall Davis, Bill Ayers, and Reverend Wright.

    http://bigjournalism.com/mwalsh/2010/01/25/not-a-photoshop-monday-pet-goat-open-thread/

I’m told that the teleprompter gave a good speech to the students.

  15. proreason says:

The State of the Union address will be interesting. So far there are mixed signals.

Some indications of temperance (which, of course, will be just a sham), and some indications of full-steam-ahead to Marxist Nirvana…..even though they have seen the whites of our eyes and they aren’t white, they are angry red.

If they ratchet up the daily minute of hate against bankers (to be followed with minutes of hate against baby-sitters and hamburger flippers), it will be fantastic news. Remember that there is only one thing a Community Organizer knows how to do, and that is fan the flames of hatred. If that is the strategy they go with, then it will mean that OBAMY IS IN CHARGE. And that will be a very very good thing, because, obviously, he is an idiot without the common sense god gave a slug. Republicans will win both houses if he is in charge for another minute.

But if they pull back their horns and go with the strategy of smaller changes “for the middle class”, then it will be a very bad sign. It will mean that the grownups in the Cabal have overruled the Moron, and they are putting him back in his play box while they give the yokels time to let the steam out of our ears. As I’ve said before, 7 more years with the WH as their weapon while moving the shells zippedy zip around the board to confuse us rubes will allow them to multiply the damage they have already done to the country.

    • JohnMG says:

Every picture I’ve seen of him in the last several days shows his angry, hateful glare. The corners of his mouth are turned down in a bitter sneer. He can’t get over it, pro. His body-language is unmistakable.

I hope he is in charge because he either cannot, or no longer wishes to, hide this side of his personality from public view, and the public doesn’t like what they see. If he hadn’t been so adroit at concealing this characteristic from the public, he would never have been elected. Even dour, bitter Harry Reid can’t match Obama for pure sourpuss expression.

    • proreason says:

      Good observation, john.

The snake is definitely pissed that the bitter clingers are still clinging to their guns.

    • JohnMG says:

Once again, sir, you are correct. Part of the anger for him lies in the realization that we aren’t just going to roll over. I don’t think he’s ever experienced this type of resistance, and it is, at once, coming from everywhere and nowhere. He’d love to lash out, but he’s never faced an adversary that he either couldn’t charm or threaten into doing his bidding.

Now that people know just how pissed he gets, they’ll frustrate him for the pure hell of it. Game on!!
