Obama: Imus Joke Like VA Tech Killings

Mr. Dobbs removal at CNN reminded us that, as we noted back in April of 2007, Mr. Obama was the first of the presidential candidates to jump on board the Media Matters campaign to oust Don Imus:

Obama: Fire Imus

Obama First White House Contender to Call for Imus’ Firing Over Racial Slur

By JAKE TAPPER

April 11, 2007—In an interview with ABC News Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., called for the firing of talk radio host Don Imus. Obama said he would never again appear on Imus’ show, which is broadcast on CBS Radio and MSNBC television.

“I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus,” Obama told ABC News, “but I would also say that there’s nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude.”

Obama said he appeared once on Imus’ show two years ago, and “I have no intention of returning.”

Last week, Imus referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, most of whom are African-American, as “nappy-headed hos.” He has since apologized for his remarks, and CBS and MSNBC suspended his show for two weeks.

“He didn’t just cross the line,” Obama said. “He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women — who I hope will be athletes — that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It’s one that I’m not interested in supporting.”

Though every major presidential candidate has decried the racist remarks, Obama is the first one to say Imus should lose his job for them

“What we’ve been seeing around this country is this constant ratcheting up of a coarsening of the culture that all of have to think about,” Obama said.

“Insults, humor that degrades women, humor that is based in racism and racial stereotypes isn’t fun,” the senator told ABC News.

“And the notion that somehow it’s cute or amusing, or a useful diversion, I think, is something that all of us have to recognize is just not the case. We all have First Amendment rights. And I am a constitutional lawyer and strongly believe in free speech, but as a culture, we really have to do some soul-searching to think about what kind of toxic information are we feeding our kids,” he concluded.

Then, at a campaign event on April 17, 2007, in Milwaukee, just one day after Seung-Hui Cho murdered 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus, Mr. Obama compared Mr. Imus’ remarks about the “nappy headed” basketball players to the killings:

(The pertinent remarks begin about 8 minutes into the clip.)

… “I spend, along with my wife, a lot of time making sure that my two young daughters, who are gorgeous and tall and I hope will get basketball scholarships, that they feel good about who they are and that they understand they can do whatever they can dream might be possible. And for them to be degraded, or to see someone who looks like them degraded, that’s a form of violence – it may be quiet, it may not surface [sic] to the same level of the tragedy we read about today and we mourn, but it is violence none the same.”

We can’t help but wonder if Mr. Obama will come out today and say that Mr. Dobbs remarks about immigration are somehow like the shootings at Ft. Hood.

But of course he would never denounce the ravings of radical Muslims the way he denounced a joke from a talk show host.

In any case, Mr. Obama’s comparison seemed to reveal an amazingly distorted sense of proportion — to say the least.

“What we’ve been seeing around this country is this constant ratcheting up of a coarsening of the culture that all of have to think about,” Obama said.

This from the self-fame man who now as President calls people who disagree with his policies “teabaggers.” And who has his minions do the same or worse.

“I hope will get basketball scholarships”

That pretty much sums up what is wrong with black culture. Why doesn’t he wish they excel academically and be recognized for their scholastic achievements? That they work hard and build character and not receive unjustified attention for a frivolous and useless ‘talent’. Or would that be ‘acting white’?

  2. Right of the People says:

I’m willing to bet their kids are so far out of the mainstream when they get to college after their sheltered, prep-school education real black kids will be a shock to their precious little systems.

This is typical liberal-speak, “Do what I say, not what I do.” Someone should remind this big-eared bozo of the saying, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander” the next time he opens his piehole and denigrates the other side.

  3. proreason says:

Isn’t it great that we have a president who never rushes to judgement.

Except when it suits his America-hating agenda.

In which case, “rush to judgement” is more like “stampede to judgement”

    Say what bro?

  7. pdsand says:

Moreover, why was there a presidential campaign going on in earnest in April of 2007? Why aren’t republicans campaigning for president now?

As has been said before to Red Hussein, YOU LIE!

Your campaign website was a virtual library of insults to Jews. And there are plenty of open Jew haters on your staff.

But I guess that’s different in your world. After all, it’s just Jooooooz. Not like regular people.

    Lying commie bastard!

What will Obama’s girls think when they read his Dreams book?
Basketball? So why did Serena Williams visit the WH?

Can we ban Obama’s Book!! racist , vulgar, “n” ords, “g.d.” words, and 4 letter “F”, the “B’s” “S” “W” words remarks. Will they follow Obama’s greatest desire after reading Malcom X, to purge the poisonous white blood from his body.

I think it was ‘very wrong what Imus said’, but he’s a saint compared to Obama who calls himself a leader of America, and we have to see and hear his mug, in schools, stores, everytime you get on the internet it’s that
Obama wants moms to go back to school. aahahahahahahahahhahah
