Official: ‘Top Kill’ Stopping Oil, Gas Leak

From the Los Angeles Times:

‘Top kill’ plugs gulf oil leak, official says

Drilling fluid has blocked oil and gas, U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen says. Engineers plan to begin pumping in cement and then will seal the well.

Reporting from Houma, La. — Engineers have stopped the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico from a gushing BP well, the federal government’s top oil-spill commander, U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, said Thursday morning.

The "top kill" effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers, had pumped enough drilling fluid to block oil and gas spewing from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well was very low, he said, but persisting.

Once engineers had reduced the well pressure to zero, they were to begin pumping cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help in that effort, he said, engineers also were pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.

As of early Thursday morning, neither government nor BP officials had declared the effort a success yet, pending the completion of the cementing and sealing of the well.

Allen said one ship that was pumping fluid into the well had run out of the fluid, or "mud," and that a second ship was on the way. He said he was encouraged by the progress.

"We’ll get this under control," he said.

Allen also said that, later Thursday, an interagency team would release a revised estimate of how much oil had flowed from the well into the gulf before the "top kill" effort began. The Coast Guard had estimated the flow at 5,000 barrels a day, but independent estimates suggested it was much higher, perhaps tens of thousands of barrels a day.

We question the timing of this report. Or at least its veracity.

After all, Mr. Obama has not spoken yet. His first press conference in almost a year is scheduled for later in the day.

And only his words alone can be credited for finally bandaging this wound in Mother Earth.

Pelosi conferance blames Bush for Oil spill. Fact, it was Obama’s appointees such as one who served under Clinton.

“Many of the people appointed in the Bush administration are still burrowed in the agencies that are supposed to oversee the [oil] industry,” Pelosi said when asked if Democrats could have prevented or mitigated the crisis by keeping a closer watch on the industry…

Added the Speaker, “the cozy relationships between the Bush administration’s agency leadership and the industry is clear.”…

I’ve heard no complaints from my members about the way the president has handled it,” Pelosi stated….

I heard early on news the oil tank was empty.

But apparently dark syrup substance is still pouring from tank. Well, the LA mayor who failed prepare New Orleans did say they’d become a chocolate city once again after Katrina.

Also, environmental friendly CNN said the booms are full, but not be removed. (the booms are hairnets full of hair clippings that absorb oil).
Still, CNN has some total idiots on their show.

I love the part about them only having ONE ship load of mud and running out!
How bad do things have to be before they make realistic back-up plans?
I would have at least ordered two more ships loaded and on standby in the area.
It isn’t like this leak started yesterday!

Your going to have to stop confusing a perfectly good crisis with common sense cures. :-D

Obamy would not have publicized his famous “plug the damn hole” explitive unless BP had told him that the technique was working.

This us the most contemptable liar to ever hold office in this country. LBJ and Clinton were the closest things, but at least they occasionally said things that weren’t meant strictly to glorify themselves.

    • JohnMG says:

I suspect you’re correct, pro. And the choice and tone of his invective was for show as well, calculated to make him look decisive and forceful, and about to lose his patience with “those imbecils”.

      What a putz!

    • proreason says:

I couldn’t watch the news conference because I get physically sick watching the liar, but from reading about it, it was 100% in praise of himself.

Everything good that happens in the world, it’s because of him.

Everything bad that happens, it’s somebody else’s fault.

Rush call him a 13 year-old, but I don’t think he is nearly that mature.

    • JohnMG says:

Agreed. It’s difficult for me even to listen to his voice on the radio.

He has set the stage for taking over BP by assuming responsibility and absolving them of the blame. But as in all things, he has his fall guys already in place.

It will always be somebody else’s fault. After all, he inheirited this mess from somebody else!

I had occasion to watch a segment on Paris Hilton the other night. While I watched her do the only thing she is qualified to do…twirl and strike various poses that make her look “sexy” for the cameras while saying nothing, I realized this air head is qualified for nothing, proved by her short stint on TV showing she is qualified for…nothing.

It also struck me that she is the feminine version of Obalmy…who is also qualified for nothing and can’t say or do anything of value,( without a teleprompter or directions from his handlers…at the last minute possible, and even that is debateable) except to twirl and strike poses before the cameras.

Nice batch of kids we Boomers raised.

  5. LarryG says:

Not only can I not tolerate the sound of his lying voice but his arrogant head carriage is more than I can bear. Nearly every sentence ends with an explantation point and usually contains at least one “I”. God Almighty, how did we get saddled with this dumbass?

    • jobeth says:

He ends his sentences with an upward inflection…another upward inflection…and then a downward inflection…as a period…or to say “that’s how it will be”

Sort of like when your dad talked down to you when you were a kid and he was laying down the law to you, right before he sent you to your room to think about things.

I want to reach through the TV screen and slap his arrogantly stupid face, (upward inflection), stick a sock in his mouth (another upward inflection) and tell him to grow up! (downward inflection…as a period…right before I send him to his room [in Kenya someplace] to think about things.)

    • confucius says:

I find his strut irritating and in particular, how he descends steps. He bends his elbows, makes fists and pumps them up and down with each step.

I think he thinks rehearsed machismo is synonymous with innate masculinity.

    • jobeth says:

      “with innate masculinity”

We all know that should read “with inMate masculinity”.

With divine help maybe someday we can make it read that way.

BP Resumes Work to Plug Oil Leak After Facing Setback
    Published: May 27, 2010

HOUSTON — BP on Thursday night restarted its most ambitious effort yet to plug the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, trying to revive hopes that it might cap the well with a “top kill” technique that involved pumping heavy drilling liquids to counteract the pressure of the gushing oil.

BP officials, who along with government officials created the impression early in the day that the strategy was working, disclosed later that they had stopped pumping the night before when engineers saw that too much of the drilling fluid was escaping along with the oil.

It was the latest setback in the effort to shut off the leaking oil, which federal officials said was pouring into the gulf at a far higher rate than original estimates suggested.

If the new estimates are accurate, the spill would be far bigger than the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989 and the worst in United States history.

In the top kill maneuver, a 30,000-horsepower engine aboard a ship injected heavy drill liquids through two narrow flow lines into the stack of pipes and other equipment above the well to push the escaping oil and gas back down below the sea floor.

As hour after hour passed after the top kill began early Wednesday afternoon, technicians along with millions of television and Internet viewers watched live video images showing that the dark oil escaping into the gulf waters was giving way to a mud-colored plume.

That seemed to be an indication that the heavy liquids known as “drilling mud” were filling the chambers of the blowout preventer, replacing the escaping oil.

In the morning, federal officials expressed optimism that all was going well. “The top kill procedure is going as planned, and it is moving along as everyone had hoped,” Adm. Thad W. Allen of the Coast Guard, the leader of the government effort, told CNN.

And Robert Dudley, BP’s managing director, said on the “Today” program on NBC that the top kill “was moving the way we want it to.”

It was not until late afternoon that BP acknowledged that the operation was not succeeding and that pumping had halted at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

  7. tranquil.night says:

I know it’s a smaller matter of near inconsequence, but given that the top kill does seem to have failed, this article is reeeaally bad. Clearly, Steve, Rush and others, your suspicion was dead-on about the correlation of the story and the press conference.

Pro, you said: “Obamy would not have publicized his famous ‘plug the damn hole’ explitive unless BP had told him that the technique was working.” I still believe this, which is why it would be funny to me if BP just lead him on just to jam a fork in his leg while “the boot” is still on their throat. It’s not like the left isn’t already claiming that they’re being intentionally elusive with their information and trying to save profits over solve the problem.

Remember the LSM was carrying split-screen coverage of the supposed top kill attempt during the presser. All of that was phony we know now, as the top kill was suspended the night before. Who’s trying to mislead who?

You can’t sit there and point the finger and say “you’re going to handle every last bit of this,” do nothing for 5 weeks, then claim credit for being the man in charge, then weasel away from the problem again by saying the real people in charge aren’t being forthcoming with the truth, while in the meantime staging a charade to imply your pending success, which fails. You’re left stuck in a knot so tangled not even your buddies in the media know where to start untying it. Heh, where are the cigarettes at, right? Maybe some kobe beef will wash it all down and after a good night’s sleep this will all be gone. Then we can reboot our crusade to remake the country, right? Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy? Just plug the damn hole!
