Oh, Joy! It’s Ashura Time Again – Photos

The joyous event as celebrated around the Muslim world, via the wire services:

Afghan Shiites flagellate themselves with knives during the Ashura procession in Kabul, Afghanistan, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009. Ashura marks the Shiite Muslims commemoration of the 7th century killing of their most revered Saint Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, a symbol of martyrdom for Shiites

Shi’ite pilgrims take part in a religious procession of Ashura in Najaf, 160 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad January 7, 2009.

Shi’ite Muslims gash their heads with blades during a ceremony marking Ashura in Nabatieh, south Lebanon, January 7, 2009.

A Shi’ite Muslim taps the head of a baby with a razor to draw blood during a ceremony marking Ashura in Nabatieh, south Lebanon, January 7, 2009.

A Shi’ite Muslim boy flagellates himself during a Moharram procession ahead of Ashura in Amroha, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, January 6, 2009.

Has there ever been such a bloody religion?

Good clean fun. Gotta love those guys…

    Jeepers!

    Stone-age Heathenism at it’s finest…

Really now, how can these people be taken seriously outside of being an international threat to civilization?

God bless Israel! What would we do if these were Canadians?

    • proreason

They want to go back to the stone-age, or at least to the 900’s.

That was when men were men, and women were chattel.

As Mark Steyn has pointed out, Muslims are one of the few groups in the world that is expanding its population. And the growth rate vs the decline rate of people who don’t live in the Stone Age is astonishing. They are on a growth path to take over the world in a few decades, simply by headcount.

Why are the faces of “these” innocent children not being televised repeatedly on mainstream media??

I know this is a yearly “Tradition” yet, seeing these images again fills me with indignant rage. Especially when considering the media bias in the Israeli offensive in Gaza.

By the way………I originally had a quite a few expletive filled comments to make.
    I didn’t! …But I had them.

  4. U NO HOO

I say whatever the strongest word is for disgust and nausea.

My God sent His Son to suffer for me.

    I prefer my God.

    Call me selfish.

PS, those people who crucify themselves at Easter time also disgust and nauseate me.

    • Rusty04

      AMEN to that!
Thank you Jesus for your sacrifice.
Can you imagine what the MSM would do with these pictures if it were Christians behaving like this? I dare say the MSM will not even mention this.

  5. heykev

Why isn’t anyone calling this “child abuse” when they are using razor blades on children’s heads?

  6. Most people don’t realize that Muslims do this because Muhammad’s grandkid was a dirty Emo cutter, who, feeling pain on the inside, needed a way to express pain on the outside.

  7. Cincinnatus

This happens in some third world Christian countries as well. In particular, in the Philippines:

    http://rawstory.com/news/afp/G.....62007.html

    Easter celebrations feature real crucifixions.

    • Icarus

I think somebody alluded to this already.

And… on uninformed and simplistic face value, the ignorant could tether parallels; (as the mainstream media may do) but in reality the two are nearly the antithesis of each other.

I never did hear your clear point on the matter though???

      P.S

Are you also saying (using this logic) that we should be equally fearful of Philipino Christians as we are of Middle Eastern (anywhere for that matter) Muslims?

Warning: I have not viewed this – I am not one to view real inhumane torture inflicted upon a child purposely by the parent. It was posted on Michelle Malkin’s website and from the comments – I would not be able to view it and stay sane.
This is a link to the Washington Post (of all outlets) pictorial of a female genital mutilation by these barbaric 3rd century wannbe throwbacks.

How anyone can equate an individual choice to be stupid (and dead) with a forced ‘compliance’ with ‘religious’ rules ‘interpreted’ by the local ‘religious’ leaders – is beyond me.

Until every civilized person in the World stands up and says No – this is an abomination of religion, humanity, women and children – it will continue and as the children are tortured – they then will see no reason not to torture others – and it will keep on keeping on.

Aided and abetted by moral eqivalancer’s (such as yourself Cincinnatus), the silent, the PC crowd and of course the liberal left – who truly are stupid enough to believe that if they don’t criticize they will be spared.

I will pray for their souls – all of them – they are all lead astray simply by people whose true goal is power. There is none so blind, as those that will not see.

  8. Don’t tell me all cultures are “equally vaild” because any culture that ritualistically cuts open the heads of small children is sick.

My 2-year-old fell the other day and bumped his head. I was heartbroken to see him cry, even if he got over it and resumed playing rather quickly. And, when he was a little baby, I clipped his fingertip with a nail clippers and he bled. I cried for an hour afterward.

So don’t tell me my culture is no better than this. MY culture loves children and protects them from all harm. We don’t cut their heads with razors and let them bleed.

  9. Liberals Demise

Someone tell me again…..why we outlawed the use of Napalm and Flechete rounds?

    Ticktock: “Stone-age Heathenism at it’s finest…”

Don’t insult the ancient heathens by associating them with these twenty first century barbarians….LOL. I believe the Greeks and Romans were a cut above these self-flagellating losers.

The hypocrisy of the media is astounding. “Pallywood” (Palestinian media) broadcasts any wounded child on cue to vindicate Hamas’ hatred of Israel but the same media are silent on kids who are ritualistically cut open in the name of Islam and its martyrs. Such hypocrisy.

I do believe we’ve wasted our efforts in Afghanistan. These people won’t change unless they aim for something higher than slicing open the locals.

    • proreason

“I do believe we’ve wasted our efforts in Afghanistan”

      yep

It hasn’t changed much since Alexander the Great, and is too rural to be controlled for anything close to a reasonable cost in men or money. The best strategy is to periodically disperse the Taliban and to keep Karzai alive.

But it’s Obamy’s war now. Can’t wait for Code Pink to start hammering him.

“Know you not that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”

It will be interesting when our “if it feels good, do it” liberals meet up with these guys. If it makes you bleed, it is holy.

  12. 12 Gauge Rage

Bass akwards people! If they would even put half this much energy into pleasing their women, loving their children by not indoctrinating them with hatred, and learning to leave in peace with their neighbors-both Jew and Christian, then they might be legitimately recognized as a people who practice a religion of peace. Not this zealous display of barbarism.

  13. Confucius

How darling. Some of these remind me of Hamas’ vacation pictures from Gaza.

Say, you don’t think Hamas copied them do you?

  14. lt matt

I’ve got a great idea. Send them all our old Ginsu knives with a sharpening stone and just let them have at it…

  15. Kytross

As soon as I saw the name it reminded me of Asherah, the false goddess worshipped by the Israelites back before the babylonian exile.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A....._and_Judah

If you scroll down a bit there’s an article on there stating that the root of the two words is different in Arabic.

What struck me in particular was the cutting themselves as a form of worship, it reminded me of Ba’al worship, again from pre-babylonian exile Israel (and Judah!). Exemplified in 1 Kings chapter 18 when the priests of Ba’al face off against Elijah, who was the only prophet of God at the time in Israel.

    http://www.biblegateway.com/pa.....xt=chapter

Pay special attention to verses 15-29, especially verse 28:

“28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.”

    That sounds vaguely familiar.

  16. 12 Gauge Rage

You left out the best part of this passage in which Elija mocked the priests of Ba’al by telling them to shout louder, because maybe Ba’al was asleep or out on a journey and therefore unable to hear them.

    • Kytross

That’s actually verse 27 which reads in the NIV:

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”

But the Hebrew they translate as ‘busy” is actually used for “going to the bathroom” as shown in the English Standard version:

27And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”

      Heh.

  17. 12 Gauge Rage

A friend of mine who was an avid scripture reader offered the same detailed interpretation as you. Pretty funny. The great ‘deity’ Ba’al refusing to answer his prophets because he’s sitting on the throne reading the weekend edition of the Cuneiform Times. Elijah had the same great sarcastic wit as my older sister.

OK, let’s give these fine young men more J4 visas to come study structural engineering and immunobiology in our country! Yessss!
