Al Jazeera: US Wanted To Capture Osama

From the administration’s model news outlet, Al Jazeera:

Zeroing in on bin Laden

Gregg Carlstrom
02 May 2011

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a 40-minute raid that followed months of planning and years of investigation, US officials said on Sunday.

Bin Laden went into hiding shortly after the September 11 attacks, so his communications with the outside world were handled by trusted couriers. US spies have been monitoring many of those couriers for years, the CIA said on Sunday.

That’s handy information to give the terrorists. They won’t make that mistake again. (In the intelligence world, the last things you want to reveal are your methods and sources.)

“One courier in particular had our constant attention,” a senior administration official said. “We identified him as both a protege of [September 11 plotter] Khaled Sheikh Mohammed and [alleged al-Qaeda member] Abu Faraj al-Libi.”

The US spy agency learned his name four years ago; two years later, it tracked the courier and his brother to a compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan

So we have known about this compound for two years?

[T]he brothers who lived there “had no visible source of wealth,” leading the CIA to believe that other people lived in the compound.

US officials eventually came to believe that those “other people” were bin Laden and his family, and presented their assessment to US president Barack Obama in September.

Several months of investigation followed, and then Obama chaired a series of five national security council meetings to decide on a course of action.

Perhaps Obama had some ACLU lawyers advising him. In fact, it looks like he did:

The council decided on an operation to capture bin Laden.

Don’t tell that to Eric Holder who previously boasted that Mr. Bin Laden would never be taken alive.

But apparently, all tough talk to the contrary, the administration planned on reading Osama his Miranda rights and immediately supplying him with legal counsel. After all, we are not savages.

All of which probably explains why this was done with ground troops instead of just a series of laser guided missiles. Apparently, Mr. Obama was willing to put our best soldiers at risk to save Mr. Bin Laden’s life. So he could eventually have a nice show trial, preferably in downtown New York City.

Administration officials will not say whether the operation involved military personnel, CIA officers, or both; whoever conducted the raid, they rehearsed it several times beforehand.

“The president made the decision to undertake the operation at 8:20am on April 29th,” the White House said.

The operation itself was launched two days later, on May 1. Obama met senior officials around 2pm to review final preparations; US personnel then launched a helicopter raid on the compound, which took less than 40 minutes, according to a senior administration official.

The goal of the raid was to capture bin Laden – but the al-Qaeda leader “did resist the assault force,” officials said.

Perhaps Osama had his own ACLU lawyers advising him.

Shortly before 4pm, Obama learned that bin Laden had been “tentatively identified.” Three hours later, the president was told there was a “high probability” that bin Laden was killed; his identity was later confirmed with DNA from his late sister.

Not according to other reports – and common sense, given the time it takes to perform such tests.

Three other people were killed in the raid, including bin Laden’s son and a woman who allegedly acted as a human shield, and at least two more wounded. One US helicopter crashed during the assault.

"Who allegedly acted as a human shield" against her will.

Bin Laden’s body “will be handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition,” an administration official said, though he refused to say where the body would be taken for burial.

Al Jazeera probably will gloss over Bin Laden’s ‘burial at sea,’ for fear it may rile up some of its more pious readers.

By the way, it looks like the word has already gone out to Mr. Obama’s press minions that they must tamp down Al Jazeera’s claim that the mission intended to capture Bin Laden.

From Reuters:

U.S. team’s mission was to kill bin Laden, not capture

WASHINGTON | Mon May 2, 2011

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. special forces team that hunted down Osama bin Laden was under orders to kill the al Qaeda mastermind, not capture him, a U.S. national security official told Reuters.

"This was a kill operation," the official said, making clear there was no desire to try to capture bin Laden alive in Pakistan.

But if the plan wasn’t to try to capture Bin Laden, why not just bomb the compound and go in and collect the body afterwards?

After all, Pakistan is an ally. They wouldn’t have stopped us from collecting his body.

I’m willing to let Obama bask in the glory of this moment for now and ignore the fact that he managed to time his announcement to interrupt “The Donald’s” show or the way he waited so long or the lack of praise for all of the people that made it possible for him to “Direct” them and provide a “Go Ahead”.
When the campaign is in full swing, however, the gloves will be off.

    • Melly

True – the more one learns about the details of the achievement, the more one realizes that most of the credit should go to the Bush Administration. I just read on Bloomberg: “U.S. intelligence picked up the trail that led to the house after tracking an al-Qaeda courier, officials said. Intelligence officers learned of the courier soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, identified him four years ago, and found he was living in the compound last August.”

Nope, I’m not rising to it. Everything is fine and everybody done good. I’m criticising nobody for nothing; today is too sweet and I’ve waited too long. Nobody’s taking the shine off this for me. Tonight we open a bottle of the good stuff…

Since Reuters cleared that up, does this weigh in as an assassination – and can we do the same thing with Gadaffy Duck – or was this an incredibly nunanced hit that doesn’t count as taking down a head of state?

    So where’s the death certificate?

The operation went down last week. They were waiting for DNA confirmation before releasing the news to the media, no wait –

It was authorized last week and carried out yesterday. We hadn’t gotten DNA yet but it was definitely him and he’s in Davy Jones Locker now. We’re super cereal.

Oh, and while no Americans special forces were hurt, 3 women, a young man, and a middle aged twig with massive kidney problems did manage to down one of our choppers, which was then fully destroyed for technological security purposes by our forces in the 40 minute firefight where nobody else in the middle of a military town that was harboring him did anything.

Okay. Congratulations, Mr. President. Can we slay this debt now, and no, not just by slaying our Military, now that it’s ‘Mission Accomplished.’

  4. Right of the People

Barry must be privately POed about this. I’m sure he wanted his hero to be captured so we could go through with a show trial and all the protests and acts of terror that would have been perpetrated with demands that the tall sucker be released.

Of course then with all of that hell going on he could have justified declaring martial law to “protect” the country. With martial law, there wouldn’t be any 2012 election to worry about and his dream of being King for Life would be fulfilled. No need to turn the country to socialism if you have a monarchy. Ah, King Barry the Impotent and Queen “Thunderbutt” Moochelle with the two little princesses, the royal family.

If Barry really wanted him alive then he shouldn’t have sent the SEALS since they generally don’t take prisoners. I’m sure from what I heard on the tube that they did give him a chance to surrender; like one second before giving him a third eye.

One more Mooselimb down, millions to go.

  5. proreason

    Breaking news.

Bin Laden started demanding in April that the Moron release his school transcripts.

Donald Trumps’s whereabout are currently unknown.

  6. BillK

Where then are the many, many people on the left who loudly complained in the press that as Bin Laden was the head of al Qaeda, which was a worldwide organization, that Bush’s attempts to kill him violated the ban on the assassination of world leaders?

  7. proreason

Yeh, on another thread I wondered whether the Seals took matters into their own hands. Steve’s Al Jezeera find may indicate that they did. The Moron certainly would have wanted a show trial. And unless there was a really big fire fight, surely 20 to 25 of the greatest combat experts who ever lived could overpower a 53 year old without killing him.

If that’s true, then they are ever greater heros than we think.

    • Melly

When they grabbed Sadaam out of that rat hole (“President Bush sends his regards…”), they could have put a bullet in his head easily, but I believe the military respected Bush and followed orders. In this instance, I don’t know what the SEALS were thinking – certainly not their high respect for Obama.

    • tranquil.night

The only casualties I’ve heard confirmed are OBL, Jr., and 3 of his concubines.

Assuming his courier was there plus the 10 or so elite bodyguards he was rumored to have, it still shouldn’t have been a match for 25+ spec. ops. on four gunships, one which went down. A clean hole to the brain isn’t exactly likely in a pure firefight.

And with the body in the great abyss, we may not hear the details of the autopsy like the path of entry/exit.

You may have pinned it Pro (and Steve!) Bam wanted a new election day ace in the hole. The strike team did the right thing – they ignored the politics and arranged the meeting between a beast and his lord.

    • proreason

If little lenin had wanted bin Laden dead, he would have waited another year or more to go after him.

But think about the propapanda benefit of having him in lockup for the next 18 months.

Of course, maybe the Seals were forced into shooting him. But they had the element of surprise, and the guy hasn’t been able to get any exercise for 10 years. He was big, but he couldn’t be strong. They could have just shot him in the legs and hauled him off; or stunned him; or knocked him on the head; or use gas; or 50 other ways they have to capture somebody we couldn’t even imagine.

    • tranquil.night

He’s so desperate to take credit for the kill order he didn’t give that I’m not sure the goofball even realizes that in doing so he’s admitting to embracing a policy of targeted killing, while a half-baked Kinetic Military Action drags on in Loonyville, Africa because targeted killing is exactly what we cannot do.

Of course, only Obama can be a complete hypocrite and still get the press to fawn and slobber over it. That’s why he’s The Chosen Won™, after all.

    • proreason

This report says bin Laden was done in by a double tap to the head:

      http://nationaljournal.com/whi.....n-20110502

That’s not death in a fire fight, that’s an execution.

If true, I think it means one of two things:
      1. The Moron ordered an assasination
      2. The Seals didn’t follow orders

Surely, the Make Believe Media will be clearing that up for us very soon.

    • jobeth

TN…I’m wondering if they rushed them off for a burial at sea? If not why not? Surely they can make a martyr out of Jr as easily as daddy’s grave.

  8. jobeth

    I was thrilled at first.

Then there are so many nigly little details just don’g add up I had to see if I was the only one with huge questions. Of course I had to check out S&L, (I’ve been recovering from a couple of surgeries in the past months…doing very well now)

Something is fishy with the timing, On the “DNA” done so fast and in what nearby lab…and with what method that can give results even before the O made his announcement, On the quickness of his ‘burial at sea” Why so quick. Why couldn’t photos…real ones be taken by reps from the media before they rushed him off to a watery grave. I could go on.

Also…did anyone note how fast the GW Uni students showed up at the WH…and with little flags? They were there even before the announcement was given. All looked amazingly like the “youth voter” during the O’s election effort. Few older people and a couple of military showed up. Otherwise all students….and armed with their little flags. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them with one before…lol.

Odd don’t you think, that way back, just prior to the gulf oil well explosion, Obalmy said he was going to open the drilling up in the gulf…then lo and behold…here comes the explosion…killed that in a hurry.

Now just prior to this event he suddenly decides to ‘prove his honesty’ by releasing his BC that could have/should have been released eons ago. “Why he is just the picture of truthfulness” How can we possibly question anything he says. And just when his favorablity was at an all time low. Just a cowinky dink I guess.

I have no knowledge yet at what his real game is, but I sure have my doubts and questions. There are just too many ragged edges to this whole thing…and a bit of a fishy smell. Time will tell, but I’m not convinced of anything yet.

That being said…whether this is real or not, God Bless our Navy Seals…for everything they do…as well as all our other service men and women and their families who sacrifice so much for us.

    • tranquil.night

Jo! It’s so great to hear from you! I have your continued speedy recoveries in my prayers.

I noticed everything you noticed, and good on you for putting it out there. While I think the sentiment of the reaction is genuine, there’s no question of the coordinated effort to make this the biggest thing since the fall of the Berlin Wall with Obamus Magnus the presumed star.

I’m not inclined to question whether it’s really Osama as much now, despite the quick disposal. Rush says he’s seen a supposed picture, the WH say they’re floating the idea of releasing a picture. We must not be the only ones ‘just asking questions’ there.

Good point though: were Jr. and the concubines buried in accordance with Islamic tradition? Am I wrong to be confused as to why we’re affording the beast an Islamic burial when he’s not supposed to represent Islam because we’re not at war with Islam?

Oi, aren’t you glad to be back in the fray Jo? Lol

Edit: Fun fact – OBL killed 8 years to the day from Bush’s ‘Mission Accomplished.’ Optics.

    • proreason

      There you are.

Good to hear you have recovered and are still fiesty.

    • I agree jobeth. The whole DNA thing throws a monkey wrench into the whole story. And I don’t understand the references to “…his identity was later confirmed with DNA from his late sister.” What exactly does that mean? They compared the DNA of some dead body to DNA from Bin Laden’s dead sister and that proves beyond doubt that the dead body is most definately Osama?

I watch CSI. The brother sister DNA will share a certain number of common factors, but unless there were only the two of them in the family (and this may be the case, so correct me if I’m way off base here) and not a family with 13 brothers and 20 sisters (as is so common in cultures where the men marry 9 different women and make babies year round to compensate for the martyrdom of children) the dead guy could be another brother couldn’t it? For them to come out and say the DNA tests are difinitive is a bit much for my “bovine excrement meter”.

I’m not even going to start on the “burial at sea” thing. I can’t suspend disbelief enough to make that one make sense.

    • jobeth

      Thanks TN and Pro…and Untrainable.

Yep…back again…and yep…a bit fiesty..lol. I may not always be right but I am always asking questions..;-D and yes I’m glad to be back in the fray. I do get stressed when i can’t vent…lol You all are my sanity. And set me straight a time or two.

By the way…after abdominal surgery in Dec ’10 and back surgery in March ’11m I’ll likely be dropping out again around Sept to get two shiny new knees. I expect I’ll be, ohh…25 years old again by that time. lol. It does feel good to get a little relief in my back so I’m looking forward to the knee replacements. So if I suddenly drop out…you know what I’m doing.

    • proreason

The burial at sea makes sense to cover up the evidence of the double tap. He has to kill that story as soon as possible because the only two possibilities are that he ordered an assassination, or the Seals disobeyed his orders. The second might be worse than the first for the Moron. He doesnt want to get in a dispute of honor with military heroes.

I expect the wh to attempt to discredit the double-tap story very soon.

    • jobeth

Pro…next question is…Does this mean Obalmy can be tried in the global courts for murder.assination? Ummm, makes one wonder. First the Libian leader hit…(killed his kid’s family) and now OBL. Ahhh, beginning to see a trend here…

No worry though…he’ll throw the Seals under that bus to join all the others. Its a wonder that bus can even move with all those folks under it.

The one thing we know for sure…he won’t take responsibility for anything except for when he steals credit for something good he had nothing to do with.

    • proreason

Jobeth, sounds like you are going for the full Angelina Jolie.

When will you be dating again?

    • jobeth

Naw…I don’t want the lips (although I believe hers are real not “built). I don’t want them to get flabby when I turn 80…lol Can you imagine what some of these women are going to look like with those flabby lips in their old age? ha!

All this surgery is long over due…I am so tired of hurting from this arthritis…My back is better all ready. And the abdomin surg is nothing so sexy…only gall bladder and appendix…lol.

      But thanks Pro… ;-D

    • TerryAnne

      Adding my $0.02.

First, the picture Rush saw is fake.

Second, if we knew about this for a week, why did Zero wait until 11:30 pm to announce it? A man who loves attention as much as he does…and he gives a speech when most normal people are sleeping?

Third, they say we dumped his body to 1) not make a pilgrimage site out of his grave, and 2) because no one wanted his body. Um…wouldn’t you take the fact that no one wanting his body to be a sign that not many people really liked this guy? Sure, if could be that they don’t want a lot of terrorists running around their country…but, seriously?!? Pakistan is full of terrorists, so what would one more grave of a terrorist be over there?

  9. Melly

I must be turning into a Liberal – but all of this is just wrong.
Who is next on the hit list? Oh, yes, Muammar Gaddafi – and will Americans be cheering again?
We entered a country (violated soverignty law) and assisinated/executed Osama (double tap to the head). Then we dump the body.
If we just put our gleeful emotions to the side and actually articulate what occurred in Pakistan the illegitimacy becomes very clear.

    • Mae

Melly, Melly, just stop it! Your inner liberal self is decrying the killing of a man who not only chose to meet his Father of Lies but is now delighting in his underworld presence and is being congratulated for the evil he represented. Hell was always his destination. His time came. He’s gone.

    • jobeth

Wouldn’t you have loved to see his face when he realized those virgins weren’t there to meet him after all! That would be priceless.

  10. Chase

I think we have another 3,000 or so double-taps to accomplish so before we even begin to catch up to and bring justice for what the 19 violators and assassins committed nearly 10 years ago….

No regrets, no second thoughts, and hoping against policy that someone is doing the math to divide that reward money up to the soldiers and pilots who performed the deed.

  11. tranquil.night

It is my opinion that anyone who willingly and totally turns themselves into a beast has abdicated their universal rights as a man.

And Poke-e-stahn was clearly harboring it.

But yes, what we just did violates every conventional Liberal belief and standard. But then now we see that those are just Rules for Rubes.

  12. Astravogel

The Daily Mail (UK) is running a death photo.
    Really looks like UBL.

    • proreason

He was 53. No grey in the beard at all. Why would such a photo appear on Paki TV? Surely, the Seals would have tight control of any photos. I think it’s fake.

Why would little lenin allow a photo anyway? The only reason I can think of would be to prove he is dead, but everybody knows photos can be faked.

A photo might prove he was assassinated, rather than shot in a firefight. Can’t see it, but I’ve been wrong a lot too.

    • jobeth

      Hard hard evidence against Obalmy.

Wondering…if convicted in a world court do you think he would swing like Hussein? Naw….A slap on the wrist from his lefty buds and they would put him in charge of “human rights” when he’s no longer prez. Or maybe house arrest in Hawaii.

  13. oldpuppydixie

The al Jazeera site says its article was last “modified” TODAY–the 2nd. What was the modification…does anyone know?

    • proreason

What I heard on this was that Al Jazeera was initially reporting that the objective was to take Osama alive, but that they were back-peddling on the report. That was several hours ago.

It’s what fueled my speculation that the Seals disobeyed orders to prevent Obamy from parading Osama in a cage for 18 months.

  14. Natural Born Citizen

Was BHO “wagging the dog” wanting to change the story about his credentials and following the Clinton game plan as he captured hearts, and minds? ( Ours of course, and independents especially).Should he not give credit to Bush for Gitmo, and enhanced interogation since that’s what provided the intel that finally caught the rat? Thanks to our special operators and there sanctioning with extreme prejudice OBL will be testing out the theory of multiple virgins. I expect where he is headed it will be as hot as the desert in the middle of Saudi Arabia but getting tossed into the brink seems more of a Chicago style whack job. Did they fit him with some concrete boots? Call me a cynic but I just don’t believe one thing this pathological liar says. Young socialists in training saying the pledge of allegiance almost before BHO’s speech is done much less knowing it proves to be hard to believe. The last time BHO pulled a head fake it was Bernanke’s speech, what could it be this time? He really does not want us to see his college records does he? Where is Trump did he slip in the bathtub?

  15. retire05

“his (ObL) communications with the outside world were handled by trusted couriers”

Gee, no mention that the reason for that was because the NY Slimes revealed that our intel was tracking ObL via his cell phone.

Jane Harmon, one of the few Democrats I respect due to her view on the war against radical Islam, said today that as soon as ObL learned we were tracking his cell phone, he went to the ancient practice of using runners (couriers). One has to wonder if the NY Slimes had not acted as an accomplice to ObL revealing security secrets, would we have killed him before now?

  16. canary

Obama would have acquitted Osama bin Laden if our heroic troops had not taken him out. Thank God

Just as Obama brought that 1 African muslim from Gtimo to NYC for trial. The one behind 200 plus killed at American embassy in Africa. He got a slap on the hand because it wasn’t on the bomb.
Obama civil rights ambulance chaser would say bin Laden didn’t fly a plane. Just as he won’t indict CAIR.

    We will never forget 9/11.

  17. Chase

Seems to me some of us might be a bit quick to any conspiracy theory over the confusion as to when this took place. I have no personal doubt that Obama had his media experts advising him on the side, playing out the potential scenarios to how this would play in the different potential outcomes, scheming up spin directions and tactics, and that all of that too went into Obama’s decision, and may have played a big a part in the end as to whether it was a go or not. (As to it being a gusty decision….lol. Can you imagine the stories and the disgust that wouild ooze out if the military and intelligence arms had reached their level of irrefutable proof, operational planning, and readiness to go, and have had Obamy walk away and not authorize it? I don’t see the courage aspect at his end….he knew that they knew what he knew, so how could he come up with a rational reason not to do it, and then survive? I think it took no guts at all. Frankly, I am surprised he did it, but he must down deep have figured the positives of the mission outweighed whatever he might have gained from postponing it, or tipping off the Paki authoritities …

Conspiracy? Or ineptitiude and rush to print? It will be interesting to see it play out, if anyone keeps track, or identifies the idiots responsible.

However, I believe the intended thrust of this blog is to expose the MBM for what they are – lackeys of the Liberal causes, and aids and enablers in the deceit of the people by the powerful and well-placed. I don’t necessarily think that the confusion over the actual date and timing of things is so much the bumbling of the administration, though they certainly have given enough evidence of that capability in the past, but perhaps just the mistake-prone, rush-to-exalt, unprofessionalism and pursuit of the Pukitzer Prize and name recognition by the small-minded, self-serving, agenda-driven non-journalists with which our society is encumbered.

I could be totally wrong, and they may be only passing on the bumbling nature of this seat-of-its-pants administration of idealogues and what was first parsed out, but I just think we should be reminding ourselves that there are two (2) players in this game, and the ineptitude of one does not necessarily and always go hand-in-hand with the other.

Obviously, someone was wrong or said and wrote the wrong things. I am just having difficulty figuring the odds in one direction or the other.

    • TerryAnne

Good point – bringing up the MBM lackeys! I couldn’t help but think – all day yesterday – that if this had been Bush, the media would have never accepted just a “I killed him! Trust me.” as acceptable. The complete lack of anything – pictures, confirmation of the unit by the unit, no body, etc. – is enough to make any person wary (especially since Zero’s lips were moving…so you know he was likely lying); however, the MBM is so obviously wanting something good from their favorite prince that they’ll run with whatever he says, anything resembling positive. Zero was starting to take a beating on the whole BC thing – not so much whether it is true or not…the whole dragging it out and then making fun of those who found it to be a legitimate question (see his black tie “comedy” routine). He was basically caught showing his contempt for the average citizen. And, Heaven knows, we can’t have that. Steve’s latest article – the one talking about Zero’s “steely resolve” and having to cut his golf game short being the mark of such a great man (gag) – is proof positive of this.
