Pakistanis Protest Raid, Reduce US Forces

From a hopeful Reuters:

U.S. drone strike in Pakistan; protests over bin Laden

Fri May 6, 2011

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – U.S. drone aircraft fired missiles into a house in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region on Friday, killing at least eight suspected militants just as Islamists protested against the killing of Osama bin Laden. It was the first drone strike since U.S. special forces killed the al Qaeda leader on May 2 not far from Islamabad, further straining ties between the strategic allies.

About 1,500 Islamists demonstrated against bin Laden’s killing, saying more figures like him would arise to wage holy war against the United States.

Today is Friday, after all, which is the Muslim day of prayers – and, of course, rage.

Still, we can’t help but suspect that if Mr. Bush were still President the protest would have been the headline and the lead for this Reuters report.

Pre-dominantly Muslim Pakistan has yet to see any major backlash after U.S. forces killed bin Laden early on Monday in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad.

But Reuters is not about to give up hope.

But his death has angered Islamists, with one major hardline political party calling on the government to end its support for the U.S. war on militancy.

"Jihad (holy war) against America will not stop with the death of Osama," Fazal Mohammad Baraich, a cleric, said amid shouts of "Down with America" at a demonstration near the city of Quetta, capital of Baluchistan province in the southwest.

"Osama bin Laden is a shaheed (martyr). The blood of Osama will give birth to thousands of other Osamas."

Some protesters burned American flags.

Naturally. But if we burn a Koran…

Anti-American sentiment runs high in Pakistan, despite billions of dollars in aid for the nuclear-armed, impoverished country…

Anti-American sentiment seems to be directly proportional to the amount of US foreign aid a country receives.

Meanwhile, we have this from the US government-owned National Public Radio:

Pakistan Calls For U.S. To Reduce Military Presence

by Julie McCarthy
May 5, 2011

Pakistan’s army says it wants the United States to reduce its military footprint in that country. The decision is an apparent protest of the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

The U.S. operation on the al-Qaida chief’s compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad is now the subject of a Pakistani army investigation.

Thursday’s statement was the first by Pakistan’s army since revelations that bin Laden had lived down the road from the country’s elite military academy in a town filled with retired officers…

Of course. they are not investigating their lapses. (Not that they had any lapses. Not really.)

The decision that the Americans were to reduce the strength of their military personnel to the "minimum essential" came after a daylong emergency meeting of the corps commanders, convened by the army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Kayani

Every day we are leaning more and more towards Senate candidate Obama’s opinion, as expressed in this September 2004 article from the Chicago Tribune:

Obama would consider missile strikes on Iran

By David Mendell, Tribune staff reporter
September 25, 2004

As for Pakistan, Obama said that if President Pervez Musharraf were to lose power in a coup, the United States similarly might have to consider military action in that country to destroy nuclear weapons it already possesses. Musharraf’s troops are battling hundreds of well-armed foreign militants and Pakistani tribesmen in increasingly violent confrontations…

I think there are elements within Pakistan right now–if Musharraf is overthrown and they took over, I think we would have to consider going in and taking those bombs out, because I don’t think we can make the same assumptions about how they calculate risks.”

Maybe we should just bomb Pakistan’s nuclear facilities into oblivion, and call it a day.

This is the part that bothers me the most. Obama may very well have given the order to kill, thereby making OBL a martyr. He will be elevated to godhood. Chairman Obie, ever the dutiful muslim, knew this. I would much have preferred taking OBL alive and putting him in the basement of Gitmo forever. One little lightbulb and a mat to sleep on. Basic food and water and that’s it. Release a photo of him every 6 months or so to let the sand-people know he’s still alive and living in captive squalor.

By making him a martyr, well, that’s the worst thing. I’m not dismissing that it was probably necessary as the lives of the SEALs may have been in danger and then, by all means, waste the guy. But now we’ll never hear the end of it. *sigh*

    • tranquil.night says:

I thought OBL was reviled in the mostly moderate Islamic world? Gee, why isn’t everyone over there joining CAIR in celebrating?

Anytime we want to declare victory in Iraq and Afghanistan and declare war on the Paks, well, I’m up for it. They’re the real enemy, have been all along.

  3. Right of the People says:

I’m for pulling all of our troops out of both Afghanistan and Pockystan (as Barry the Clown calls it) and let them do what they wish. Let India settle their hash as I’m sure as soon as the Great Satan is no longer in their midst the Pockys will resume their feud with the Indians. As far as the Afghans, they seem to truly want to live in the stone age and I say let them.

As far as OBL being a martyr, even if he died of natural causes it was bound to happen. Rusty, there is no way the O’ster would ever consider jailing his hero, especially at Gitmo since he closed that facility two years ago, didn’t he? Oh he didn’t? Well I guess that’s just one more campaign promise broken.

And they say ‘waterboarding’ is torture……
Listening to the lefts’ insistent moaning and bitching?

  5. oldpuppydixie says:

So Pakistan is mad at the US. Well isn’t THAT a big deal. Anybody think they’ll get mad enough to throw our money back in our face??

    • Liberals Demise says:

They’ll give us our money back, all right.
As soon as dingleBarry sells them our gyro system for their “Miss the Barn door” missiles.
Hell…..Bubba sold it to the chi-chinks for a contribution to his favorite cause …. himself!!

  6. bill148 says:

The covers have been pulled back for a while now. It is us (Christians) and the Israeli people against the muslims. The hindus will try to sit on the side for a time, as they have done all along, but the time will come when they have to get off the fence. For now it is Thank You, Lord , for this day and keep the powder dry.
