America, where are you now

Although this was recorded 40 years ago it seems to fit in quite eeriely today!

I was in Paris France…..and being an American was great as long as you spent lots of Francs…..most of the time, it was enduring rudeness and open hostility. I fastened a Mapleleaf to the collar of my overcoat, and got treated much better by the service sector.

I went to Normandy, and there, they still remember American sacrifices, and they dont let any American forget it either. All along coastal France, Americans were warmly welcomed, even thanked because their fathers had given so much for their freedom.

The same goes in the other countries I have visited, and the most hostile to Americans country to date is San Francisco…but I digress. So dont mistake my angry response as believing the entire world hates us, they dont. Most admire us, and that is why so many try to move here permanently.

They have lived the folly of socialism, and the opportunities this country used to offer hard working immigrants was a beacon for decades. Once the new arrivals discover that we have adopted their own form of socialist government, they will no doubt think twice about staying in a mirror image of their own failed society.

So yeah, DW is right. And I respect his opinion. Anybody has a problem with that will have to meet Mr. Taterstick. ;-)

…Sigh. OK, we’ll go over this once again (and SJ -I’m not singling you out, my good friend, but this misconception does keep popping up and it needs to be stepped on).

First off: who says the entire world hates America?
Answer: the press. So they lie like rugs about everything else, but this we must take as gospel?

But wait a minute: don’t the CBC, BBC, Al-Jazeera, the APF and every other non-American media outlet also claim that their respective citizens all hate the US?

But wait a minute: I was in Canada/Britain/Iraq/Venezuela/France/wherever and some people were yelling “Yankee go home!” Isn’t that proof that the whole world hates the US?
Answer: Sure -if you’re willing to accept that in all of Canada/Britain/Iraq/Venezuela/France/wherever there are absolutely no assholes who just like to have someone handy to hate (because you just know that in all of the US there are absolutely no assholes who meet the exact same description… -point taken?).

Pandering to “world image” is folly.
This is very true. But it doesn’t just apply to America. Just ask Israel, or, for that matter, any Canadian veterans of the Balkans or Somalia.

Outside the US, as well as inside the US, there are both anti and pro American factions. For the most part only one side has a voice that is heard.
Care to guess which side that is?

Enough already. The battle lines have been drawn and, with apologies to the potential martyrs on the site, they have little to do with what flag flies over your head.
