Schools beat the drum for equity

Verenice Gutierrez picks up on the subtle language of racism every day. Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year.

“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” says Gutierrez, principal at Harvey Scott K-8 School, a diverse school of 500 students in Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood.

“Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

Guitierrez, along with all of Portland Public Schools’ principals, will start the new school year off this week by drilling in on the language of “Courageous Conversations,” the district-wide equity training being implemented in every building in phases during the past few years.

This deranged person is a public school principal?

Besides, why are schools teaching "equity training" when most students today can barely speak basic English?

Through intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, the premise is that if educators can understand their own “white privilege,” then they can change their teaching practices to boost minority students’ performance.

So avoiding racially charged phrases like peanut butter and jelly will lead to better grades.

Last Wednesday, the first day of the school year for staff, for example, the first item of business for teachers at Scott School was to have a Courageous Conversation — to examine a news article and discuss the “white privilege” it conveys.

Was this Courageous Conversation inspired by Eric Holder’s comments about how Americans don’t have the courage to talk about race? It seems like that is all some Americans talk about.

Most of the staff are on board, but there is some opposition to a drum class being offered to middle school boys of color at Scott School.

"Boys of color" sounds definitely racist.

Fifty percent of the students at Scott are Hispanic; another 15 percent are black and 9 percent are Asian. Eighty-five percent are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

Chuck Barber, who also offers boys’ drum corps at Vernon and Faubion schools in Northeast Portland, approached Gutierrez last year to start up a lunch-time drum class for black and Latino boys once a week.

At least one parent has a problem with the the class, saying it amounts to “blatant discrimination and equity of women, Asians, whites and Native Americans.” ..

What is wrong with ‘segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever’?

Gutierrez denies that any students were turned away from the drum corps, and vehemently rejects any suggestion that it is discrimination to offer a club catering to minority boys.

“When white people do it, it is not a problem, but if it’s for kids of color, then it’s a problem?” says Gutierrez, 40, an El Paso, Texas, native whose parents were Mexican immigrants. “Break it down for me. That’s your white privilege, and your whiteness.”

Again, this racist is the principal of a school.

Like many if not all of PPS’ leaders, Gutierrez has gone through California-based consultant Glenn Singleton’s “Coaching for Educational Equity,” a weeklong seminar on race and how it affects life; she’s also become an “affiliate,” certified to teach the equity curriculum; and she serves on the district’s administrative committee to address systematic racism, a group that meets every other week

Oregon’s Department of Education just last month identified Scott as a “focus school,” one that performs among the state’s lowest 15 percent

Gee, that is a surprise.

    I’ve noticed that the phrase “white privilege” has been increasing in its usage lately. Nothing good will come of this. “White privilege” will soon be used as a justification to disposess whites of their property. I hate to sound alarmist, I just don’t put anything past liberals in this age. At the rate things are going, a second civil war seems unavoidable.

  4. The only white privilege I am aware of is that white heterosexual men are the ONLY group who can be openly discriminated against without any legal recourse. We are the only UN-protected class of people. And single white heterosexual men are not only burdened with that privilege, but also with the privilege of paying for EVERYTHING from the education/indoctrination of children that are not ours, to birth control and abortions for women we’re not even banging.

    Yay?

    Oh, and I forgot, we’re all racists by virtue of our whiteness. So… yeah, there’s that too. Diversity is a bitch.

      In America there are essentially no political options for whites. If white students attempted to hold a meeting to discuss their legitimate racial and cultural interests at Harvey Scott School they would be shut down faster than you can say “Jackie Robinson”––to the complete indifference of Liberals who prate about democracy, tolerance, human rights, and “white privilege.”

    Two things:

    1) I would say at this school at least the white kids are minorities. If my math skills haven’t completely gone to hell, they are just 26 percent of the school’s population.

    2) Isn’t it racist to only offer the drum class to black and latino kids? How about the 9% Asian and 24% white kids?

    Remind me never to visit Oregon, they’re a bunch of racist, liberal pricks.

      In 2006 Obama wrote that whites would soon be a minority.

      Look on the bright side. Whites will be allowed to file discrimination complaints based up their color.

      I complained on a worker and was asked by the manager is she was an Asian.

      (I was caught off guard and started tripping over my words)

      Since the manager was Asian and I would never consider the worker Asian based on her color and traits.

      I told the manager I did not know what Asian meant. I didn’t know what an Asian was.

      She said all three of the workers were Asian. I said no way. I only noticed one minority. She did not look Asian she looked Spanish or Native American. All three were overweight. I told her weight made it hard to tell the difference of the two I believed she was. I did not get to see her bottom to try and determine which. Since she was the same height as another overweight, I said I thought the other two were white, so it would be the girl who looked less white.

      I consider Asian to be oriental.

      It’s shocking to learn Afghanistan is an Asian country and not a Middle-Eastern Country.

      Maybe technically there are no Middle-Easter Countries. I’m so confused.

    Really, “white privilege?” Most of the politically correct people I’ve known in the work place (everything from a gay rights activist to a chair of the local NAACP to a Democratic party hack) all seemed convinced racism and bias where everywhere and if they can’t find it then they just haven’t looked hard enough. As a result there are “signs” and “hidden meanings,” and people must be policed to make sure they don’t ever say or do the wrong thing. Saving the world from racism/bias is bother their mission and meaning in life, and if I’m against what they do then I’m against something good and therefore I must be obliterated.

    And the standards never seem to apply to them. EVERY LAST ONE of these people brought drama, ineptness, and problems to work. They didn’t show up on time, couldn’t keep up with their assignments, and the management was afraid to touch them because of the political and legal firebrand they would make. Eventually they would have to leave or felt they’d “put up” with enough and look for greener pastures.

    And all the hate and vitriol is because stamping out racism and bias is their outlet for some fundamental underlying problem they are too afraid to face–which is why none of them will never say, “Hey, we fixed it, things are working okay now.” There’s always “more work to do.”

    You know what my “white privilege” is? Not projecting my problems onto everyone and making their work lives a living hell so we can all be equal. Take that and stuff it in your peanut butter and jelly.

    The famed former slave who went on to be a great botanist and scientist, George Washington Carver, promoted peanut butter. Why? Because the soil of the south was depleted by years of cotton, and peanuts as a legume help fix nitrogen back into the soil. But there was not much of a market for peanuts. So George Washington Carver promoted peanut butter and that benefitted both black and white share croppers who could then afford to rotate their crops.

    I learned that in school.

    I could accuse this teacher in Portland of being racist for condemning peanut butter. But actually she is just profoundly stupid.

    The Separationist School of Western-Islamic Relations, formulated by Lawrence Auster, may provide a useful approach for dealing with loons of the Left such as Verenice Gutierrez. Inevitably, our irreconcilable differences will only hasten our demise, so we must separate from them if we intend to survive.

    Let me guess Verenice Gutierrez is a card carrying union teacher, and a member of La Raza. Would it be considered racist to force the white kids to eat a horse-meat burrito with beans and rice?
