Pelosi Bill Requires Posting Of Calories

From Nation’s Restaurant News:

Menu labeling part of Pelosi’s health care reform bill

By Paul Frumkin

WASHINGTON (Oct. 29, 2009) Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi Thursday introduced a sweeping, $894 billion health care bill that also includes provisions for menu labeling.

The 1,990-page bill outlines general nutrient-labeling requirements for restaurants and retail establishments that are part of a chain with 20 or more outlets.

Those restaurants affected would be required to prominently post calorie counts for standard items on menus and menu boards as well as calories per serving for each item on a buffet, salad bar, cafeteria line or self-service display.

Standard menu items are defined as those offered for at least 60 days per calendar year and would not include daily specials, custom orders and test market items on the menu for less than 90 days.

Restaurateurs also would be required to post a brief statement regarding daily caloric intake “designed to enable the public to understand, in the context of a total daily diet, the significance of the nutrition information that is provided.”

In addition, operators would be required to advise customers that additional nutrition information is available upon request.

Restaurant association officials have voiced support for a similar Senate bill, maintaining that the industry needs a uniform national nutrition labeling standard to avoid a patchwork of state and local regulations.

"We’re very pleased that the nutrition information provision continues to garner bipartisan support, and we’re pleased that the agreement is now moving forward in the House of Representatives," said Mike Donohue, vice president of media relations for the National Restaurant Association.

However, a coalition of chain executives insist that the measure does not go far enough and argue that the rules should apply to a greater number of foodservice operators.

The Pelosi bill also would require calorie disclosure in vending machines.

Separately, the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee bill also includes a similar menu labeling provision.

We looked this up. And the reporter is right. It’s in the House bill, starting on page 1511.

Which just goes to show how pervasive and intrusive any government run ‘healthcare’ system can (and soon will) be.

Besides, wasn’t this only supposed to be ‘insurance reform’?

(Thanks to BillK for the heads up.)

But this bill is simply to fix the “insurance problem,” right?

  2. Yarddog1 says:

The bill should also contain a provision that the IQ of each member of Congress be tatooed on their foreheads.

One or two numbers would not take up that much room.

Since Pelosi’s skin is stretched so tightly, it would actually be her stomach skin.

Notice how this is only at “chain” restaurants. You know…the types of places where us great unwashed masses nosh. Then again, most “fancy” restaurants are failing and no one really eats at those places (just chases food around a plate), so I guess there is some method to this madness. (oh, who am I kidding)

I’d ask what’s up next, but Sheryl Crow has already bloviated on the “ills” of toliet paper.

You made a comment about this being tucked into the health care bill. I know that must be sarcasm, but at least its inclusion in this bill is more closely related to its “parent” than the hate crime bill (or what I like to call the gay marriage and military bill) being tucked into the DoD budget.

    Classic headline from NRO:

“Nancy Pelosi’s health-care plan makes insurance something no rational person would buy, and then forces them to buy it”

I noticed the other day Pelosi lost weight over-nite. Guess it’s those long nights working on her back and down on her knees.

I say we post the academic grades and IQ’s of our alleged representatives.

And when I say academic grades I mean itemized, especially in math, science and history.

  7. joeblough says:

    Oh I forgot …

We’re not even allowed to know the academic grades of our ruling mediocrity.

  8. canary says:

Pelosi’s calorie counting will kill alot of trees.
