I agree, pro, it is bad news. I don't care who is in government, the abuses of the posh, at-the-ready go-fast transportation have gone on too long. While I live in SC and have noted the microscope with which they put on the Governor's use of state transportation and alleged "abuses", I think they should turn that bright light onto the political elites of DC and see the travel manifests of these Gulfstreams and big Boeings.

Sports events, golf games, graduations, shopping trips, trips to/from summer homes, etc.

It's all sickening and wasteful of tax dollars but they see nothing wrong with it. I believe that because they travel on the sly, and by law the flightplans and passenger manifests are classified, they take advantage of that and in a snotty frat-boy way, thumb their noses at the "you're not like me" folks.

There is no accountability and it chaps my ass.

"The impression they try to give is that they are “becoming dangerous” but nothing could be further from the truth"

Bad news.

I would love to see the whole fleet grounded.

If I recall correctly, George Washington rode his own horse to his inauguration.

Since every member of Congress with more than 2 or 3 years tenure is a multi-gazillionaire (every dollar earned by the sweat of their brows), they should provide their own transportation.

"Safety and maintenance issues" is pure diversionary rhetoric.

Given that these aircraft are maintained by the fedgov, and as all US-based aircraft are, they are subject to the incredibly rigorous, exacting and meticulous standards that the FAA requires. In other words, these craft are perhaps among the best-maintained in the world. And, just in case you didn't know, there are parts on aircraft that are changed out BEFORE they can fail, on a scheduled basis as well as there are plenty of spare parts about whenever a part that does fail.

Anyone ever associated with aircraft maintenance knows this.

The impression they try to give is that they are "becoming dangerous" but nothing could be further from the truth. If you look at some of the airliners flying today, which, by the way have a very strict maintenance agenda as well, but is more cost-aware and thus they tend to maximize their value, you will note that some of the oldest planes in the country, like the 737-300's and the MD-80's are still running strong and have , roughly 1000% more cycles than anything the fedgov flies around in to date.

(A "cycle" is a takeoff, climb to a pressurized altitude and a landing)

Although not what I would call "lightly" used, the fedgov's VIP fleet is not used nearly to the extreme that the airlines use their aircraft, which MUST be used in order to make money.

If they want to re-furbish the interiors, then fine. If they want new paint, then fine. They are all still very usable, still fast enough, still fuel efficient enough and well, they're just not the newest zippy thing on the block.

Pelosi's desires were simply to keep up with her rich-bitch friends who have the new Gulfstreams etc and she's no different than any other elitest tart that served Chamomile tea on the veranda to her bridge club.

I like that, in this case, essentially, she was told to sit down and shut up.

They really are something. They don't want to travel with the peons, and they won't be subject to the "healthcare reform" as they voted themselves a separate, "private" plan. Do they lose their congressional health insurance after they're kicked out of office? I hope.

"would have replaced older aircraft that have safety and maintenance issues."

All the more reason not to replace them.
