Pentagon Report Declares Gitmo ‘Humane’

Buried on the slowest news day of the week by a dismayed New York Times:

Guantánamo Meets Geneva Rules, Pentagon Study Finds

By WILLIAM GLABERSON
Published: February 20, 2009

A Pentagon report requested by President Obama on the conditions at the Guantánamo Bay detention center concluded that the prison complies with the humane-treatment requirements of the Geneva Conventions. But it makes recommendations for improvements including increasing human contact for the prisoners, according to two government officials who have read parts of it…

The report, by Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, the vice chief of naval operations, describes steps that could be taken to allow detainees to speak to one another more often and to engage in group activities, the government officials said. For years, critics have said that many detainees spend as many as 23 hours a day within the confines of cement cells and often were allowed to exercise alone in fenced-off outdoor pens…

The report concluded that the Pentagon was in compliance with the requirements of the Geneva Conventions. The review included some of the most contentious issues, including the forced feeding of hunger-striking detainees and claims that many prisoners were suffering from psychosis as a result of conditions in the detention center.

According to one official, the report noted that some detainees had difficulty communicating from cell to cell, a contention that many detainees’ lawyers have also made. The Pentagon has long insisted that no detainees are held in solitary confinement. Military officials have said instead that the prisoners are held in “single-occupancy cells.” …

Gitanjali Gutierrez, a lawyer for Guantánamo detainees at the Center for Constitutional Rights, said that she and other lawyers found that conditions have remained bleak since the start of the new administration.

Ms. Gutierrez said that a report by the rights center, to be released next week, asserts that two major Guantánamo prison buildings, known as Camp 5 and Camp 6, should be closed immediately. She said prisoners there continue to be held in isolation for as long as 24 hours a day, that psychological difficulties are treated as disciplinary infractions, and that many cells are windowless.

Ms. Gutierrez said detention camp officials have recently increased detainees’ opportunities for recreation and social interaction. She said detainees’ lawyers have been concerned that some of those moves were in anticipation of visits now being made by senior members of the new administration. The attorney general is to visit Monday.

“This is really running the risk that the review is just a big whitewash,” Ms. Gutierrez added, “and we expect more of the new administration.”

Notice that the New York Times decided to hold off running this story until the slowest news day of the week.

The report, by Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, the vice chief of naval operations, describes steps that could be taken to allow detainees to speak to one another more often and to engage in group activities, the government officials said.

Wasn’t it their “group activities” that got them put in Guantanamo in the first place?

The report concluded that the Pentagon was in compliance with the requirements of the Geneva Conventions.

Which probably makes it unique among the prisons of the rest of the world.

But how long were we lied to about this by Mr. Obama, the rest of the Democrats and of course their handmaidens in our one party media?

Shouldn’t The Times have posted this article in the “corrections” section?

And speaking of the reporting prowess of the New York Times, should they not once in a while give their benighted readers at least a glimpse of the background on the people they quote?

From Discover The Networks:

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) was co-founded in November 1966 by the radical attorneys Morton Stavis, Ben Smith, Arthur Kinoy, and William Kunstler, longtime members of the Communist and radical left.

Of course there is much more about the CCR at the link.

But suffice to say they are pro-Communist, pro-terrorist, rabid haters of this country.

So of course The Times would cite them without any hint of their political leanings.

No brainer here, boys and girls! The report doesn’t state if the (so called) terrorist have enough toilet paper or if the sunglasses they use cause UV rays to damage their eyesight.

The demoncraps that coddle these bastards and wipe their wittle snotty noses are in fact ….. cowards, traitors, back stabbers, 2 faced pigs and should be investigated for aiding and abetting the enemies of our Nation. Then quartered and sent to the 4 corners of the world.

    Sorry…..is the coffee ready?

  2. Confucius says:

Good thing Obama is closing it. I prefer inhumane ones myself.

  3. MinnesotaRush says:

Frankly, .. I’m thinkin’ anything short of beheading for these dudes is more humane than what they’ve demonstrated they’re capable of.

Geneva Conventions .. historically in place for uniformed armies, I believe (versus non-uniformed terrorists).

If it means protecting America and Americans .. I got the bucket.

    LOL, Steve.

And from the CCR website link:

Over the last eight years, the Bush administration has systematically dismantled some of the most important rights and protections in the United States Constitution. In the first 100 days of office, President Obama can, often with the stroke of a pen, restore, protect, and expand the fundamental rights on which our nation was founded. It is up to all of us to see that he does.

The Center for Constitutional Rights’ 100 Days Campaign focuses on the harm done by previous administrations and the hopes we have for making the country a better place for all.

Join us in telling the Obama administration what you want to see in the first 100 days. This campaign includes a series of white papers, videos, speaking tours and online activism that will bring these issues front and center in the public debate.

They even have a set-up that allows you to “make your own video” telling the Big O what he should do now. How much $$ is in the “stimulus” bill for these bozos?

Poor babies, they can’t scheme and plan if they can’t communicate! What’s the matter with those evil Gitmo guards!

“and often were allowed to exercise alone in fenced-off outdoor pens…”

    Now that is plain torture!!!!

Just wondering though…..how much “communication” and communal
“exercise” time our guys were given in THEIR prisons? You know, right before they beheaded them…or drug their mutilated bodies thru towns?

Personally, they need to be glad I’m not making the rules. I would anchor them out at sea on a flimsy raft and watch the sharks communicate and excercise with them.

Might even charge admission for that show!

  6. jobeth says:

My husband just said we should ship over a group of strippers to “execise” in front of the prisoners.

They would all have to commit suicide.

    Problem solved!

They should be provided with the opportunities stated in the Koran, and nothing more.

After all, everything humanity needs to know and do was there written. To provide more would be blasphemous.

So, no gym equipment, no tv, no recorded music, no reading material other than the Koran, no communication methods developed by the infidel west since the 8th century, etc.

What could possibly be more just?

  8. 12 Gauge Rage says:

Revamp Alcatraz and incarcerate them all there. After all, it’s the libs screaming the loudest that these animals aren’t being treated humanely. Now if they’re in their own backyard of the bay area the libs can keep a closer eye on things to make sure our boys aren’t playing too rough with these cutthroats. But you know that’ll never happen because these bleeding hearts don’t have the spine to keep them in their proximity.

    • proreason says:

A good idea, and I’m sure it will receive the same careful consideration as the Windfarm proposal for the ocean near the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport. Stretch Pelosi, being from San Francisco, will see to that.

  9. 12 Gauge Rage says:

The libs from California and Tax-a-chussetts are of the same mindset. NIMBY. Not In My Back Yard. We can’t let the betters of society have a view of society’s ills. Such as prison’s.

Well why not Alcatraz. I hear the place is so infested with supernatural activity that we won’t need to have any interrogators. We’ll just simply turn off all the lights after lock down and let these animals fears and imaginations run wild at hearing things from the other world going bump in the night. If nothing else it’ll give them a foretaste of what to expect in the hereafter, instead of the seventy-two virgins.

    • catie says:

So true about the libs isn’t it? They keep yapping about Ft. Leavenworth, Charleston and other assorted posts and bases. Yet they don’t them in the Hampton s, Cape Cod and certainly not in SFran Nan’s backyard. But that would be the perfect place for them. Let them deal with those people who they feel aren’t bad people at all. Why do those who are in the military and are stationed at those bases have to put up with having those sh*theads in their backyards. Do these imbeciles not realize that wherever these a$$hats are the locale will be a target? But of course what of it, maybe get rid of some more Red Staters and hell they know that the majority of the military didn’t vote for the Messiah.
