Investigators: Northwest Bomb Plot Planned by al Qaeda in Yemen

Officials Say Bomb Materials Sewn Into Suspect’s Underwear by Top Terror Bomb Maker

By RICHARD ESPOSITO and BRIAN ROSS

Dec. 26, 2009 — The plot to blow up an American passenger jet over Detroit was organized and launched by al Qaeda leaders in Yemen who apparently sewed bomb materials into the suspect’s underwear before sending him on his mission, federal authorities tell ABC News.

Investigators say the suspect had more than 80 grams of PETN, a compound related to nitro-glycerin used by the military. The so-called shoe bomber, Richard Reid, had only about 50 grams kin his failed attempt in 2001 to blow up a U.S.-bound jet. Yesterday’s bomb failed because the detonator may have been too small or was not in "proper contact" with the explosive material, investigators told ABC News.

Investigators say the suspect, Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian student whose birthday was last Tuesday, has provided detailed information about his recruitment and training for what was supposed to be a Christmas Day suicide attack.

According to the authorities, Abdulmutallab says he made contact via the internet with a radical imam in Yemen who then connected him with al Qaeda leaders in a village north of the country’s capital, Sanaa.

Authorities say they do not yet know if the imam was the same one who was in contact with Maj. Nidal Hasan prior to his alleged attack on soldiers at Fort Hood last month. American-born Anwar Awlaki has lived in Yemen since 2002 and is considered a major recruiter for al Qaeda by U.S. authorities. He survived a U.S.-backed air strike earlier this week.

The suspect in the Northwest Airlines attack told FBI agents he lived with the al Qaeda leader in Yemen for about a month and was not allowed to leave as he was trained in what to do and how to do it, authorities said.

At some point, according to the account, Abdulmutallab said he was joined by a Saudi citizen whom he described as an al Qaeda bomb maker.

The device intended to blow up the Northwest flight was made at the location in Yemen, according to Abdulmutallab, and consisted of a six-inch packet of powder and a syringe with a liquid. Both were sewn into the student’s underwear so they would be near his testicles and unlikely to be detected, he told agents.

Authorities say the combination of the liquid in the syringe with the powder created the flash bomb, which was extinguished by passengers and air crew.

Investigators are conducting tests to determine the exact nature of the powder and chemicals used.

Abdulmutallab suffered second-degree burns in his genital area, investigators told ABC News…

Authorities say the suspected bomber was traveling on a visa issued by the State Department on June 16, 2008 and valid until June 12, 2010. Officials tell ABC News he was on a U.S. "terror watch list" but not on the "no fly" list, which would have prevented him from boarding the flight.

He had previously traveled to the U.S. on an 11-day trip to Houston in Aug. 2008.

Published reports in Nigeria said Abdulmutallab’s father had contacted the U.S. embassy six months ago about concerns his son had become radicalized and could pose a threat to the U.S. One report said the father could not understand why his son was allowed to board a flight to the U.S. given his warning.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if Hasan’s mentor has struck again?

But of course this is just a matter for local law enforcement.

Yemen-based jihadists haven’t launched such a brazen attack like this since, lemme see…oh yeah–the other Democrat pacifist/blame-America-first’r/sabateur President was in control of our national defense during the USS Cole attack.

    Coincidence?

…..”sewed bomb materials into the suspect’s underwear…..– Both were sewn into the student’s underwear so they would be near his testicles and unlikely to be detected, he told agents.

Bet he doesn’t have the balls to do that again!

Lol…in reaction to this latest tactic they have thrust upon us, what will we now remove when going through the metal detectors at airports?

    • JohnMG says:

I’ve got a question HR. Let’s suppose he’d been succssful with his attempt. What would he have done with his 72 virgins?

Probably didn’t think that far ahead.

JohnMG, most likely he won’t. Burns continue to grow in damage (I call it cooking). One’s skin can start out look red shiny and then the melting starts.

He and Hasan get better medical treatment than most Americans, or their attorneys will spin inhumane treatment. I hope they read him his rights.

lol. start training those dogs for airports.

Don’t watch the video at Hot Air that shows how easy it is to build and hide a “binary explosive” bomb.

You won’t want to fly again.

    “Yesterday’s bomb failed because…”

    God performed a miracle.

When will Eric Holder arrest Jasper Schuringa, who illegally assaulted and searched the alleged perpetrator of the potential man-made disaster, even though no harm was done to anybody because of his actions?

Wasn’t what Jasper did a form of torture? What gave Jasper the right to inflict his own world view on the alleged perpetrator? From all accounts Jasper showed no compassion whatsoever to the alleged disaster maker, “hauling him out” of his seat, and “stripping his clothes off” to determine if he had explosives. What government official gave Jasper permission to do that? Apparently Jasper appointed himself as the judge in jury, even though the plane was in no danger. Particularly since the alleged potential disaster maker is a man of color. Even if he was actually trying to create a man-made disaster, shouldn’t Jasper have taken his background into consideration? Who knows what abuses the poor black muslim has undergone in his life. The mere fact that he is from Nigeria virtually proves that he has been a pawm of colonialists for his entire life.

At the very least, there must be an investigation of Jasper to see whether he acted in an appropriately senstive manner toward a citizen from a different culture that Jasper made not the slightest effort to understand.

Jasper is going to have to pay for this crime against humanity. And so will anyone with genes that are similar to Jasper’s genes. And it’s not just about a lone Nigerian either. The entire country of Nigeria has been brutally shamed and assaulted, all over an alleged something that didn’t even happen. It’s just another example of a white man imposing his will on a defenseless man of color.

I hope the Dutch guy who tackled the terrorist didn’t bloody his lip. If he did he might be prosecuted too.

Ohhh. AP has to wait til the attorney general determines it was a terrorist attack.

CBS: A senior administration official tells CBS News White House correspondent Peter Maer that the incident was “an attempted act of terrorism.” But another official speaking to the Associated Press said that an official determination of a terrorist act would have to come from the attorney general.

2 Hurt, 1 Detained in “Attempted Act of Terrorism” On Amsterdam-Detroit Flt.; Man Claims al Qaeda Tie; FBI Investigating

CBS: Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Susan Elliott had no details on the passenger injuries.

One passenger from the flight was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said. She didn’t know the person’s condition, or whether the person was a man or woman. She referred all inquiries to the FBI.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/12/25/national/main6022161.shtml

Why is the news downplaying the initial report of two passengers who were harmed; today one report saying one passenger was burned.

I saw & heard one woman being interviewed, attempt to downplay the “incident” whose demeanor was if she was a spokesperson, acting like she knew the facts, no emotion.

She said the terrorist was “un harmed”, looked annoyed and then said “one of his legs was ‘severely’ burned.”

    unharmed = severely burned ?
Guess she was with the airline or govt.
