Poland’s Pro-US Kaczynski Dies In Crash

From an all trusting Associated Press:

Polish President Lech Kaczynski dies in crash

By MONIKA SCISLOWSKA (AP)

April 10, 2010

WARSAW, Poland — Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died Saturday in a plane crash in Russia, was a one-time anti-communist activist who teamed up with his twin brother to take his country in a nationalist, conservative direction.

Kaczynski, 60, pursued a strongly pro-U.S. line in foreign relations, in accordance with a cross-party consensus that has grown in Poland since the fall of communism. He was an enthusiastic backer of plans to site a U.S. missile defense facility in the country, the largest of the European Union’s new eastern members.

However, the prickly nationalism of Kaczynski and his identical twin brother, Jaroslaw — who served for a time as prime minister and is now opposition leader — sometimes complicated ties with European neighbors and Russia.

The president, for example, long held out against the EU’s so-called Lisbon reform treaty before signing it last November. Still, his appeal at home rested partly on his forthright representation of Polish views and his tough stance on law and order…

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Kaczynski brothers were activists in the anti-communist opposition and went on to serve as advisers to Solidarity founder Lech Walesa…

Kaczynski was killed along with wife, Maria, an economist. He is survived by the couple’s daughter, Marta; two granddaughters, Ewa and Martyna; his twin brother, Jaroslaw; and the twins’ mother, Jadwiga.

If we didn’t know better, we would note that this accident has all the hallmarks of one of Mr. Putin’s KGB FSB operations.

But perhaps we’ve just grown cynical, especially over the last few days.

Polish Leader & 95 Others Dead in Russia Plane Crash …Update: Airport Was Closed Before Landing Attempt
    Saturday, April 10, 2010
    Jim Hoft

The leader of Poland and 95 other top officials were killed in a plane crash this morning en route to a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and up to 131 others traveling with him to commemorate the mass killing of Polish officers during World War Two died on Saturday when his plane crashed on landing in western Russia. (Pravda)

Russia’s Ria Novosti reported that up to 131 were killed in the crash in Western Russia.
    The AP reported:

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country’s highest military and civilian leaders died on Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia, killing 96, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the 26-year-old Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland’s political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

Although initial signs pointed to an accident with no indication of foul play, the death of a Polish president and much of the Polish state and defense establishment in Russia en route to commemorating one of the saddest events in Poland’s long, complicated history with Russia, was laden with tragic irony.

UPDATE: The Airport was closed — Pilot made multiple landing attempts.
    The Guradian reported:

The pilot was told Smolensk airport was closed because of thick fog, according to the news agency Interfax. He was offered a choice of landing instead at either Moscow or Minsk, the capital of Belarus, but decided to continue with the original flight plan to Smolensk.

The pilot made three unsuccessful attempts to land before the crash. On the fourth try the plane fell apart, Interfax said, citing officials at Smolensk’s interior ministry.

  2. proreason says:

    Very suspicious.

It’s highly likely a pilot flying the entire government would have been one of the best in Poland.

But the story seems to indicate an appalling lack of judgement on his part. First, deciding to land at a closed airport. Second, in making 4 attempts. Moscow and Minsk are 200-300 miles away. Certainly, there would have been enough fuel to reach either of them, even after an aborted landing attempt or two.

It’s also seems unusual that so many high officials would be on a single plane.

Perhaps it was just pilot error, but the details sound very strange.

  3. Howard Roark says:

    Very suspicious indeed.

Just two years ago, Poland represented the boldest of European countries, defying the Kremlin’s warnings in accepting our missile defense system.

Is it mere coincidence that Barry paid the Don (Medvedev/Putin) a recent visit? Was an “agreement” struck between the two world leaders?

  4. A Mad Pole says:

Yea, everyone is pretty much bummed out here in Poland.

They were flying in to attend a memorial ceremony in Katyń, where 70 years ago the Soviets killed well over 20,000 Polish officers, priests and members of the inteligentsia (in a good, old-fashioned meaning of the word).

  5. Right of the People says:

As soon as I saw the news on this I started wondering if the true cause will ever be known (missile residue, etc). Since it was over Russian airspace one has to wonder.

    • jobeth says:

the news said that the investigation is directly under Putin’s care.

We may never know what caused it. But Poland’s president or not…since when does Putin manage air crashes? A bit odd don’t you think? That is if you expect truth from them.

  6. jobeth says:

You can’t put radio activity in everyone’s soup!

Sort of reminds me of the Clinton days when people were flying into mountains, committing suicide in the park and having heart attacks while in jail. Not that there is anything to find suspicious in any of those things.

Nothing at all to worry about here.

    • Howard Roark says:

You can’t put radio activity in everyone’s soup! – FUNNY!

Right on, jobeth. Nothing at all to worry about here. The Clinton reference is spot on.

Funny how Barry can snub our closest ally in the Middle East (refusing a photo op with Netanyahou[sp?]) one week, then turn around the next and fawn all over the regime that steamrolled over Georgia not that long ago. Barry’s moral compass points not north, but to the nearest dictatorship available. And of course this simply emboldens the Russians to continue supporting Iran and intimidating the Ukraine, Poland, and the rest of eastern Europe.

    • mr_bill says:

My thoughts exactly, Joebeth. Obama is more of a coercion, arm-twisting, stand-on-your-throat-until-you-agree kind of guy. This has a very Clinton-esque feel to it. That said, I’ll fully expect Nerobama to grant his support to some radical anti-western, pro-communist replacement for the deceased President Kaczynski. I’m sure it will be an old [KGB] friend of Mr. Putin.

    • misanthropicus says:

      … radioactivity… in anyone’s soup…
Oh, Jobeth, your reminding us the Clinton years’ radioactive mysteries brought to my mind Obama’s birth certificate’s radioactivity…
Nothing to see here… go away… nothing to see here… it doesn’t matter, birth certificate or “vital” record is the same thing… no radioactivity in this soup…. go away…

    • Petronius says:

jobeth: “Sort of reminds me of the Clinton days when people were . . . committing suicide . . . .”

Sort of reminds me of the Nerobama days when people were committing suicide . . . like Freddie Mac CFO David Kellermann who hanged himself at his house in Reston, Virginia.

    • jobeth says:

To all, my apologies for citing radioactive soup. I misremembered (hey…if our politicians can misspeak…)

      It was radioactive sushi.
      http://www.rferl.org/content/article/1072840.html

But the end results are the same.

misanthropicus & petronious…Its the commie way. That we are finding so much of it intertwined with the American “progressives and left” has to say something to those polyannas out there. But it doesn’t.

It’s like the DNA of the left. The finger print of sorts. Its so predictable.

Disagree and have sway with people?…you disappear or have a tragic accident…tsk tsk too bad…such a shame..

And Pet… I thought the same thing with Freddie Mac CFO, David Kellerman

Its all in connecting the same dots…over and over and over again. The left has run out of creative ways to rid themselves of ‘pesky’ people

  7. jobeth says:

    wrong spot…sorry

  8. MinnesotaRush says:

    Good grief!

There is just so, so much “wrong” with this “accident” as it’s being reported.

A plane that is probably being flown by the best crew available in Poland .. a plane that “falls apart” after 3 landing attempts (that top notch crew gave the plane a lookover before they left) .. the crew chose not to use an alternative landing site fully well knowing they had the bulk of their governing body onboard and had tried unsuccessfully to land at least twice (gee – go for 4 tries – don’t think so) .. etc, etc.

Too many common sense items akilter!

  9. canary says:

No way an airport would close down without enough notice to the President before they took off. No way they’d close the airport if there was a fog that came when they knew that President planned on landing. An empty airport with not even the news reporters lingering after it was closed. Those Russians like chemicals & poisoning. They may have sprayed the pilot with something that made him confused or disoriented.

AP: Top Polish political, military killed in jet crash
By Victor Buravchenko & Monika Scislowska 04-11-2010

    SMOLENSK, Russia –

Sensing the depth of the tragedy for Poland, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin personally took charge of the investigation and very quickly and publicly offered condolences

Chunks of the plane were scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the red and white national colors of Poland stuck up from the smoking debris.

“This is unbelievable — this tragic, cursed Katyn,” Kaczynski’s predecessor, Aleksander Kwasniewski, said on TVN24 television.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and some cabinet members flew to Smolensk from Warsaw. The president’s twin brother, former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, headed to the area in a chartered plane along with party members.

Tusk, joined by Putin, placed a wreath at the site and knelt. When he stood up, Putin hugged him.

Afterward, Putin and Tusk held a video conference with members of a special commission in Moscow, … They said some bodies have already been flown to Moscow for identification and were being taken to the morgue.

~~Poland’s Foreign Ministry said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one had not shown up for the roughly 1 1/2-hour flight from Warsaw’s main airport.~~

Polish-Russian relations had been improving recently after being poisoned for decades

Russia never has formally apologized for the deaths but Putin’s decision to attend a memorial ceremony earlier this week in the forest was seen as a gesture of goodwill

Kaczynski wasn’t invited to that event because Putin, as prime minister, had invited his Polish counterpart, Tusk.

Kaczynski, 60, was the first serving Polish leader to die since exiled World War II-era leader Gen. Wladyslaw Sikorski in a mysterious plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943.

The president was a conservative and a lifelong skeptic of Russia with many detractors at home and abroad.

Putin and Medvedev promised Tusk they would work closely with Poland in investigating the crash.

Both black boxes have been found.

The presidential plane was fully overhauled in December, the general director of the Aviakor aviation maintenance plant in Samara, Russia told Rossiya-24. The plant repaired the plane’s three engines, retrofitted electronic and navigation equipment and updated the interior, Alexei Gusev said. He said there could be no doubts that the plane was flightworthy.

Kacyznski became president in December 2005 after defeating Tusk in that year’s presidential vote.

The nationalist conservative had said he would seek a second term in presidential elections this fall. He was expected to face an uphill struggle against Komorowski, the candidate of Tusk’s governing Civic Platform party.

Poland has become a firm U.S. ally in the region since the fall of communism — a stance that crosses party lines.

The European Union member nation of 38 million people sent troops to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and recently boosted its contingent in Afghanistan to some 2,600 soldiers.

U.S. Patriot missiles are expected to be deployed in Poland this year. That was a Polish condition for a 2008 deal — backed by both Kaczynski and Tusk — to host long-range missile defense interceptors.

The deal, which was struck by the Bush administration, angered Russia and was later reconfigured under President Barack Obama’s administration.

Under the Obama plan, Poland would host a different type of missile defense interceptors as part of a more mobile system and at a later date, probably not until 2018.

Putin in charge of everything. Obama ignored Bushes endeavors with Polish supporters war against terrorism. Obama reverses, and favors Putin.

    • jobeth says:

“Chunks of the plane were scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the red and white national colors of Poland stuck up from the smoking debris.”

Scattered widely? I thought the were just attempting a landing. I suppose it could have been scattered widely…It’s possible…however coupled with all the other oddities involved with this crash, “scattered widely” could just as easily be an explosion.

If we didn’t already know the back story, the details of this “accident” would just get curiouser and curiouser.

  11. GetBackJack says:

    I call bull(cough)

Who says the airport was closed? Who says the tower was telling the pilot the airport was closed?

    The MSM.

And the press were immediate declaring this an accident.

    All I need to know.

    • mr_bill says:

In best Obama voice: “I don’t know all the facts, uhhh but its clear that the pilot acted stupidly.”

  12. jobeth says:

This whole thing sends chills up my spine. We are living in the most dangerous times I have ever known. You can bet with all the trips to visit all these communist governments, Obama is in this mix somewhere. Problem is he thinks he is at the top and in reality he is just another useful idiot to a bunch of hardcore commies.

If you all thought Georgia was a mess…just wait…Here comes a Russian re-take over of Poland,,,and next?

With most of the most powerful government now gone…the government is most undoubtedly in turmoil. Exactly what Russia needs to intimidate or pay off with high offices the remaining Polish officials.

The funny thing about this is it would never have happened in Bush’s time (or other conservative American’s ) presidentcy. They would have put the kind of pressure on the Russians that they wouldn’t dare this grand of a scheme. Common sense tells us our so called current prez… is on their side. He will cooperate fully with this fairly tale.

This is such a blatant farce of a tale that it can only be the first step in a re-takeover of Poland.

The give away is that so many high officials were on board the same plane.

A common sense no-no. That so many high officials would be going to Russia at the same time in the first place is highly suspicious in of itself. The Russians suckered them right in on that one.

The fact that it happened in Russia…where information is held close to the vest…and a lie or two has been known to slip from the Russian lips.

And the topper is that Putin is in charge of it all. Ummm, Former KGB…pro communist…taking charge over a huge anti communist filled plane crash…ummm where is that fishy smell coming from….?

And now…America, the former “fly in the ointment” to Putin’s plans is now headed at the WH level with multitudes of Communists and Marxists.

Putin is making hay while the sun shines.

And just like everything else since our commie prez has done since coming in power…Putin is executing his own plans in a “shock and awe” fashion.

We better ALL think about seriously praying for our own welfare…now that the missile shield is gone…and our nuclear program is stopped.
Our own economy is in turmoil, Our government having us by the throat just to survive our own health care. Our leadership in rocket science now given to the Russians (to the RUSSIANS!!!!! who send up junk) we can no longer send up defensive satellites as before. I know we still have the military…but NASA was a BIG part of our defense. Now they will work on ‘global warming. Handily got them out of the picture.

Ever wonder who might be next on Putin’s little list for the the return of the Soviet Union?

But of course I could be wrong….(not)

They only have until November to take advantage of the “star’s alignment”.

Once the conservatives regain enough power to stop some of Obalmy’s antics and later undo his plans…the whole commie world will be be on notice to “Git’r done” while they can.

I just hope its not too late for Poland….and America.

  13. proreason says:

Mrs. Palin should only fly with private pilots, and they should be screened by her husband including a heart to heart conversation.

If I were her, I would never be on the same plane as Mr. Palin, who we all know is one of the greatest dog and snowmobile sledders in the world.

And if 5 kids are any indication….he kinda has a thing for her.

    (me too ;-) )

    • jobeth says:

      Amen to that!

In all the details of this mess, I didn’t even think of the danger to her…and Bachmann. Right now I think they are the most visible candidates against the commie way.

It would do well for them to get her (them) out of the picture. I don’t think either woman could be bought off.

Your comment is both scary and right on!’

      Incidentally…”(me too ;-) )” ? Tsk, tsk….lol

      But then you aren’t alone…Brains and beauty…and a conservative…can’t beat that mix.

    • Right of the People says:

      Pro,

The reason liberal women are so fugly is they’ve gone over to the dark side.

  14. Right of the People says:

To be rather blunt about it, Putin made Obammy his bitch over a year ago.

    • proreason says:

Maybe Obamy met Vlad in that remote Minnesota resort / bath house he frequented when he was in the Illinois senate.

    • canary says:

Obama mentioned something about engaging his soviet friends during “a lunch of borscht, vodka, potato stew, and a deeply troubling fish Jell-O mold.” during his 2005 trip over there.

    • jobeth says:

You have to consider that both are fond of having their photos taken with their shirts off…showing their “glorious” bodies.

As the kids would say…’that’s’ so gay’.

  15. canary says:

A short 1 and 1/2 hour flight. That airport was shut down in world record time, maybe because there is a voice on the black box, that says the plane will blow up the second it makes impact, (like in the movie Speed) so everyone in the airport left fast. What happened to the news witness report it burst into flames upon landing?

    • mr_bill says:

A KGB Russian government spokesman released the following statement: “The witness is resting comfortably in a Soviet-era gulag somewhere in Siberia. By resting, I mean final repose, and by Soviet-era gulag in Siberia, I mean shallow unmarked grave somewhere other than Siberia.” Who wants borscht?

  16. GetBackJack says:

Clandestinely reset the altimeter. Air crew on instruments is helpless in low visibility conditions to accurately determine their position. A hit man for the Columbian cartels stated in a newspaper interview he was taught this trick by un-named intelligence agencies as a way to make a hit plausibly deniable and destroy the crime scene.

Second way is the move the approach beacon so the air crew follows what they believe is the correct glide path to the airport. It’s not. Ron Brown’s crew, associates and Ron himself died in Hillary’s 737 because an approach beacon was broadcasting out of place. How curious.

Third way, the light gun. Blind the two front seats with a sudden shot of 50,000,000 tight beam candle power right in the eyes moments before touchdown. Air crew is blinded, you can speculate on the sequence from there.

These are just three ways … and there are plenty more. Remember Egypt Air flight 990? Virtually the entire command structure of the Egyptian Military went in the drink for no known reason (and don’t anyone bring up the fabricated story of the pilot diving them into the ocean).

John Tower? Clark Feister, Asst Secyt Air Force in Alabama? South Dakota Governor Mickelson? Paul Wellstone? Mel Carnahan? Sen John Heinz? Rep. Larkin Smith? Congressman Litton, Pettis and Milller? Flight 007? Hale Boggs for god’s sake. Nick Begich. Don Nutter. Multiple incidents taking out large portions of Iranian high command staff. John Kennedy Jr (if you don’t know that story, ask Aristotle Onassis what a Greek blood feud is) – Onassis’ son Alexander (ask the Kennedys what a blood feud is)

The list is considerable and wow.

The idea that there was anyone but the best air flight crew in Poland was at the controls is laughable. That they would ignore Closed Airport warnings is laughable. That the plane broke apart on the fourth attempt is laughable. That Poland is our friend and dedicated to the Virgin Mary is not.

    More here …
    http://www.internetpirate.com/airplane.htm

  17. proreason says:

Passing strange that this happened so soon after the Obamastration abandoned Poland as an ally, cancelling the missle defense and blatantly sending the message to Russia that we could care f*g less about piss-ant allies like the Poles.

Would this have happened if Bushhitler was still in the WH?
