“Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year.”
Someone should tell Mr. Obama that Mr. Lincoln freed the slaves.
While they are at it, they should also tell this Constitutional scholar that the Constitution now forbids involuntary servitude:
Amendment XIII
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
The Republican Party got rid of slavery 143 years (and a bloody Civil War) ago.
And the Democrats have been working ever since to bring it back.

It should be noted that when this “service” program was mention during the campaign it sounded quite “voluntary.”
Indeed, there was even a financial incentive promised.

Suddenly, all mention of “required” has been disappeared. And the college tuition incentive has been added.
Maybe this is what they mean by “change.”

As of this hour all of the individual pages where Mr. Obama listed great his plans for our future have been removed.
Except for his “Service” page, where the word “require” has been replaced with words like “encourage” — and a $4,000 college tuition incentive.
Yet the Obama campaign still claim to have these plans, and that they are ready to “rule” on day one:

And I wouldnt stop there. but, no matter. I served my community already. It’s time they served me back. They would best do that by not asking what a “tater stick” is again.

I think their loophole is the phrase “…except as a punishment for crime…”. He didn’t mention his Kangaroo Kourt Krew that will dispense speedy justice on slackers, the primary charges being ’selfishness’ and ‘racism’.
I would just like to know what kind of “service: Obama is demanding? It sounds good on paper and to the liberal parents to say they want the kids to learn good citizenship skills blah blah blah, but what will they be doing? Unless of course this whole plan isn’t service but just to provide free labor for whatever, replace the government employees who’ll be lost when the taxes are cut.
And the Windfall Profits Tax to send a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families for jump starting the economy? Aren’t these the same people who earlier this year were talking about Bush’s $600 Stimulus Checks as a waste of time? The difference is Bush wasn’t taking the money from the corporations, but it’ll be interesting how this will be spun as a must have that will save the day. Meanwhile it’ll go towards beer and Playstations.
And I’m already seeing banner ads about how he’s a “fan” of clean coal. I’ll give him this, his marketing department works fast.

While your point is valid, I believe it to be based on a fasle presumption. You note that “Mr. Lincoln freed the slaves”, but you failed to note that Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Johnson placed them back in bondage. While people shout to the heavens that they are “free at last”, they cannot seem to notice that they are slaves to the great massa in Washinton who, as all good slave drivers do, provides for his servants every need so long as they remain loyal and do as they are instructed. We live in an age of institutional slavery, by which government enslaves the people by making them wholely dependant upon the master, and continues to provide so long as the servants obey. That obedience includes voting and acting as instructed. Aren’t these people told that unless they vote as instructed that “someone” will take away that which is being provided them, be that welfare, social security or whatever entitlement? Slavery is alive and well, it is just acceptable so long as it serves the almighty state rather than the private enterprise. Slavery is indeed a deplorable institution, but it is even more so when it is veiled as an act of compassion.

I’m assuming that those of us that still serve our nation in the military will have to play this game, too. I guess our sacrifices aren’t enough.
If this is suppose to be mandatory, I really don’t think it will pass the Supreme test.
1. Congress will never pass it.
2. Every citizen already has a 6 year obligation.
3. Government can not compel anyone under 15 to do anything except go to school (re: posse comitatus) and the school requirement is on the parent, not the child . So you can forget about the whole “middle-school” thing.
I say fine if EVERY SINGLE PERSON in this country gets 50 hours in learning how to use a firearm.
crosspatch, I started to write a post agreeing with you, but then thought, crap, then all the hoods would actually know how to shoot, rather than using their preferred method of holding it sideways and pulling off all the rounds in the magazine.
Lurkin: there’s more good ones than bad ones. Give EVERYONE a course in how to shoot and the hoods won’t feel so intimidating anymore knowing the person next to them can shoot just as well as they can.

I had to do 20 hours of community service, and I did it all at the Salvation Army. Once you do that service, you will most likely become a Conservative. The textbooks give 1001 excuses for poor people, but when you get there, you see people of vice. How about the single black mother of 9! 9? 9 f*king children? Guess what? From 5 different fathers! (That she can recall). Whose fault is that? Society? (aren’t liberals part of society?) Or the woman so fat and stupid, her and her daughter live at the S.A. How about not smoking cigarettes and eating McDonalds you fat cow. How can you be so fat with no money? Ech….
This is a good chance for liberals to see how pathetic people are. Mostly, students will give a half-hearted attempt, or none at all, and sabotage the whole project. It won’t work.
If people were so happy to help out, we wouldn’t need to FORCE people into it. Obama is basically tying slavery to passing school. “You want to pass college eh? Well you better do this if you want to get a good grade and a descent job buddy!”
I think the keys to the 13th Amendment are:
1) It forbids involuntary servitude; SCOTUS will likely rule that publicly financed schools means those students are receiving remuneration in the form of their education so it’s actually work-for-hire.
2) The Amendment says Congress has the power to enforce it, not that it must.

Wait till these Obama supporters who have “Peace Corps” college kids, find out they are going to be sent to 3rd world hell holes such as Kenya and Sudan to do their 100 hours of “service”. Wait till a couple of 19 year old girls are kidnapped and held for ransom in Zimbabwae. Wait till a group of Peace corps college kids are captured and killed in Indonesia by some Muslim extremists. Those are the places those kids are going to be sent to, not some cushy clean-up detail at some resort in Cancun.
Wait till they find out their middle school aged kids are not going to be doing community service in their safe suburban town one month because there is not enough to do. But a nice
crime infestedneighborhood, say Camden, or Newark in NJ, is going to be your child’s destination while the inner city youth have been given a free pass because they already live a “hard life”. Maybe their child will be one of the lucky ones to not get hit when that stray bullet flies past during some drive by shooting or some gang initiation thing.Today at work, one of my co-workers who voted for Obama came by to rub it in. I laughed and said don’t worry about me, I would start worrying about your 401K. When he asked why, I said don’t worry, you’ll find out soon enough. I also told him he better start figuring out how much it costs to rent a house in his area and figure out the difference between that and what he is paying in mortgage. Again he asked why and I said again you’ll find out soon enough. He then said I was just trying to mess with him. He didn’t have kids, otherwise I would have told him to get ready to watch his child doing free labor for the state.
Again, everybody should read Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here.” Of course Lewis was a liberal, borderline socialist, deathly afraid of fascism. But his fear was justified. He was just on the wrong side of the fence.
My biggest question is how can they enforce this? It’s going to go over real well to see a bunch of middle schoolers being hauled off to gulags at the behest of Barry.
Have y’all forgotten what Obama said during the campaign? He said that he would tie the “community service” of the middle school and high school children into public school financing. It was pretty well ignored by the kneepad, fawning media when he said it, but basically, the schools will be required to make sure the little kiddies are compliant. Or no money for that school. How are you going to force hundreds of millions of kids to do his bidding?
Well, there will be those school districts that will try to enforce this “requirement” making sure the kiddies are compliant because they can’t afford to lose the federal school funding money. But there are thousands of schools like the one in my small Texas town where the principal and the school board members are bible carrying, gun toting (deer hunters) who will not say “Yes, we can” but “No you don’t”. Schools will simply refuse federal funding. Hell, our school district gets very little money from the Fed being mostly funded by our property taxes. Drop all the illegals we send to school here, and our budget will go down. We can then get rid of all those extra Spanish as a Second Language teachers, the extra trailers required for class rooms, and no have to pay for their free lunches.
A friend of my yanked her kids out of one public school because she had purchased all the things on the list at the beginning of the year for her kids to use in class (pencils, notebook paper, copy paper, kleenex, erasers, marker, well, you get the idea) and for three kids, it was not cheap. When the kids got there the first day, the teachers were ordered to take all the supplies and put them in one big pile. Then the teachers handed the supplies out as needed. The principal said it was because there were so many kids whose parents didn’t have the money to buy supplies (in central Texas that reads “illegals”) so it was only fair. That lasted one year. The next year the parents were up in arms and said that if that was the way it was going to be, they were not going to buy any supplies and would send their kids to school with just what was needed that day. The school board overruled the principal, but by that time, a lot of kids had transferred out.
If the schools start refusing to accept federal funding, how’s the Obamassiah going to enforce that “requirement” for servitude? What happens when parents start moving out of school districts that rely heavily on federal funding? The only kids left will be the ones whose parents are drunk on Obamaide to begin with.
This new President-elect has some lofting, albiet socialist, goals.
When I was a kid it was kind of a tradition that my Irish grandmother would tell people who just showed up at the house to sit down and stay a spell and they would “talk a little treason”. She was referring to the fight for Irish independence. “A revolution now and then is good for the soul” she would say.

One little piece of advise for all you gun owners: if you have them listed on your homeowners insurance, take them off. If you belong to the NRA (as I did for years) and you insure them through the NRA, don’t. Make sure there is no written record of your weapons, be they a kid’s first .22 or your deer rifle.

I already did my service…in uniform, in an aircraft, in some of the rottenest TDY locations imagineable! I teach and I ranch, and I honestly have NO USE for some draftee squatting in my classroom spouting the “Dear Leader’s” gas! As for when I turn 55, I don’t plan to do any more “service!” Service is VOLUNTARY…slavery is forced, and this faux American wants us all to be his damned slaves…and the idiot kids who voted for him (anyone up for raising the minimum age to vote to 40? And then denying the franchise to NY, PA, NJ, CT, DE, RI, IL, OH, IA, IN,MA, MI, NH, ME, VT, CA, VA around DC, DC, MD, NM, CO, OR, WA, HI, NC around the cities, and FL in Miami, Orlando and West Palm?)

For anyone who thinks there is nothing wrong with REASONABLE restrictions on gun ownership, ask yourself this question. Why do you suppose there is such a push to require transactions at gun shows and between private individuals be subject to the NICS check?
And do you REALLY believe there is no electronic record being kept of those background checks? Remember, if the hard drive isn’t completely destroyed, the info is retrievable.

JohnMG, all my guns were purchased a long, long time ago. I quit insuring them through the NRA 20 years ago. Obama’s storm troopers can’t come get what they don’t know I have. And if it comes to that point, I won’t be the only one aiming at them.
I think I’ve finally found the most compelling reason imaginable to brush up on my math and science and take the little darlings out of a public school system I already despise. Compared to Obama’s plan to make slaves of us all, Hillary seems like a veritable goddess of reason. Already the schools teach these children nothing, now they’re going to waste even more time by making them go clean up after such people as Peggy the Moocher?

Why, call in the National Civilian Security Force (NCSF)! (Catchy martial music here to goose-step to)
The NCSF is the ultimate community organization!
I’m betting that will be a big priority for the new Chairman President to get started (because he is to really going need it) – and he already has the framework laid with his Acorn gang and campaign team – plenty of future grueppenfuehrers there.
I’m sure there will be a National Civilian Workforce arm, a National Public Services Arm for public development and political reinforcement to the population (these agents for progress will help our comrades in their public service duties), an Armed Internal Security Force and of course a NCSF Personal Protection Detail of hand -picked members of the NCSF to provide “additional” security (and muscle) to loyal party leaders. Big question here will be, do they go with the thugs in bowtie outfits or the black fatigues and red berets….ok for the monitors of the National Public Services, aprons and cattle prods…
And why not a legion of Commissars “public policy mediators” to monitor and enforce carbon emission policy, report cases of newly defined extremism, investigate excesses of public baselines for wealth and consumption, confiscate from those that are not able to keep up on their patriotic tax obligations and on and on. They would be like the auxillary to the FBI on steroids and at each level of office out rank their FBI counter-part even though they hold the same supervisory rank.
Retire05 is right, Obama will evade his campaign claims that he firmly believes in our second amendment rights by having his willing liberal administration cave to the UN at the first opportunity that International Gun Control comes up for a declaration in the UN (See John Bolton’s book “Surrender is not an Option” for a better narrative of the maneuvers at the UN over this issue in the recent past). The intent of the UN declaration is partly aimed at domestic US gun control issues. So as our new government drastically reduces, if not eliminates our second amendment rights, all under the imperative of complying with the will of the “international community”, a National Civilian Security Force would be exceptional useful in controlling State Government entities (particularly those that have promised dissention and threatened succession) and tracking and collecting firearms from private citizens. If extreme liberal policies are unpalatable and unpopular, the police and military may not be so reliable in implementation. Send a nice young NCSF member to serve you notice of your responsibility under the new law to disarm and then send the Police or armed NCSF when the “criminal” refuses.
Para-military and “peoples” security forces are useful for community organizers in dictatorial or extreme socialist states – at least before the purges are done or the military co-opted (not going to easily happen in our forces today, thankfully). And this organization is going to rival the DOD for size and budget? That is some “Force”!
Wait till we sign up to the ICC (International Criminal Court) and are challenged to turn-over military and civilian leaders for international trials based on charges filed by hostile foreign governments. Again, better to have your own “Brown shirts” to round up the usual suspects, and keep the police and other agencies, marginally on side with your government. What a motivator for those military brass who aren’t team players - hint that they could be spared the ICC if they play ball.
And, like Smoking Joe Biden said – we may not understand why the new government reacts to that promised future crisis – and we the people may balk at curfews, prohibition to gather/demonstrate, martial law, suspension of means of free communication and speech, further taxation without representation, subjugation of national sovereignty on issues/policy and law to external organizations or whatever other REAL suspension of liberties they may feel compelled to enforce for the “greater good”.
How does the Obama administration handle a population that does not willingly change to his socialist vision?
How does he deal with all those individuals in the military and local/Federal service that swore to protect the public and the US constitution?
How does he persuade those citizens that disagree to get with the program, to join the party, to move forward and change???

Kilmeny…don’t wait to brush up on anything -take the kids out of the indoctrination factory (public school) and homeschool now. We let our older two remain in high school but it was really a lot of work to overcome the indoctrination. But thanks to hubby making both of them get jobs in high school, the taxes out portion of their paychecks resulted in a come to Jesus moment for them.
