Prosecutors Seek A Trial For Berlusconi

From a snickering Associated Press:

Trial sought for Berlusconi in prostitution probe

February 8, 2011

MILAN (AP) — Prosecutors said Tuesday they will request a trial against embattled Premier Silvio Berlusconi over accusations he paid for sex with a 17-year-old girl and then used his influence to try to cover it up.

Prosecutor Edmondo Bruti Liberati said he would file the request with the Milan court Wednesday, when prosecutors would consider the request on both accusations, and whether they would be tried separately or simultaneously.

If Mr. Berlusconi were a liberal, this incident would be laughed off. But since he is a conservative, it will be considered a crime against humanity – and it will be used to try to hound him from office. Just like in our country.

Prosecutors allege Berlusconi paid for sex with a young Moroccan, nicknamed Ruby, who has since turned 18, and then used his influence to get her out of police custody when she was detained for the suspected theft of euro3,000 ($4,103), allegedly fearing her relationship to him would be revealed. She ultimately was released into the custody of a Berlusconi aide who also is under investigation.

Supporters have never denied Berlusconi called Milan police over the incident, but have maintained it was to avoid a diplomatic incident because Berlusconi believed at the time the girl was the niece of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Who knows? He may well have been right. This could be the real reason behind the Egyptian uprisings.

Berlusconi himself said he made the phone call out of the goodness of his heart.

But there is no editorializing from the AP here. No way.

Berlusconi, 74, has been dogged by scandals related to his relationships with young women and parties at his villa. He denies ever having paid for sex and has accused prosecutors of seeking to drive him from office. Ruby has said they never had sex, though she says he gave her euro7,000 ($9,400) on their first meeting and jewelry later.

Prosecutors have been considering a speedy trial for the abuse of power charge, which would skip the preliminary hearing phase if they believe there is overwhelming supporting evidence

Yes, the ‘transition must begin immediately.’

The scandal has brought criticism from the Catholic Church, as well as protests from Italian women — troubled by the image of them the case has presented — who want to make clear that not all Italian women are showgirls or prostitutes.

People who live in glass cathedrals should not throw stones.

A major anti-Berlusconi protest is scheduled for Sunday.

Naturally. And you can bet that the Communist Party, who normally champion ‘sex workers,’ are organizing it.

But after all, this is surely the biggest crises facing Italy at the moment.

Maybe at his trial he can ask what the meaning of “is” is and get off like Slick Willy.

If this were a liberal, leftist, they’d be applauding the fact that a man his age could even have sex instead of prosecuting him.

“Italian women — troubled by the image of them the case has presented — who want to make clear that not all Italian women are showgirls or prostitutes.” Especially those who dress in all black and have mustaches.

Unsurprisingly, especially if you’ve seen pictures of the women involved (and its too bad Steve hasn’t included any, not even one, to provide appropriate “context” for this item) this case has had a lot of attention from the European media. Case in a nutshell: rich, old, powerful, corrupt guy indulging himself with platoons of pole dancers, beauty contestants and tv weathergirls in exchange for cash, presents and jobs in his administration. Old, old story…only thing new is Silvio’s “bunga bunga” orgies, which at least revived one of the classic vaudeville gags: “Death or Bunga Bunga”…

Two explorers in Africa are captured by the local tribe and dragged before the Chief. Chief says “We hate all intruders! You must choose between death or bunga bunga!”

    “What is bunga bunga?”

    “Silence! Choose, dog!”

First explorer says”I don’t want to die, I want to live! I choose… bunga bunga!”

So the whole tribe jumps on him and pulls his pants off and they all, um, sexually misuse him. Hours later, he lies broken and exhausted in the dust and the Chief turns to the second explorer.

“Choose – death or bunga bunga!”

“By god” snarls the explorer, “I’ll not be served the same way as my luckless companion. I’m no one’s plaything – I choose death!”

“Okay” says the Chief. “But first… bunga bunga!”

Well, they’ve indicted the old sleazeball at last…from the BBC: Silvio Berlusconi: Sex Charge Trial to Begin in April

Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi has been indicted to stand trial on charges of paying for sex with an under-age girl and abuse of power.

Examining judge Cristina Di Censo said the process would start on 6 April, after prosecutors in Milan asked for an immediate trial.

Mr Berlusconi denies paying for sex with Karima El Mahroug when she was 17.

He also rejects claims that he abused his power by seeking her release when she was detained in another case.

He does, however, acknowledge that he called the police while she was being held on suspicion of theft.

Ms Mahroug, widely known as Ruby and now aged 18, has denied sleeping with the prime minister but has said she received 7,000 euros (£5,900, $9,400) from him as a gift after one of his parties.

Mr Berlusconi’s fast-track trial in front of three female judges will start at a court in Milan at 0930 on Wednesday 6 April, the judge announced…” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12083491

Yeah, he gave her $9 grand because nothing happened. That’ll impress the judges…
