Putin Demands Kiev Pull Troops Out Of East Ukraine

From the Associated Press:

Ukraine renews military draft as unrest intensifies

By PETER LEONARD | May 1, 2014

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that Ukraine should withdraw its military from the eastern and southern regions of the country, a statement that could bolster anti-government insurgents who are seizing buildings.

The original headline for this article was: ‘Putin wants troops out of Ukraine’s east.’ But apparently that was to inflammatory for the AP’s editors. So they dialed it back.

Hours later, Ukraine’s acting president ordered that the military draft be renewed, citing "threats of encroachment on the nation’s territorial integrity" and interference by Russia in its internal affairs.

Moscow has consistently denounced Ukrainian security forces’ largely ineffectual operation against the eastern insurgents and warned they should not commit violence against civilians.

In a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Putin said the removal of military units was the "main thing," but it was unclear if that could be construed as an outright demand…

When was the last time a foreign leader demanded that a country remove its own troops from its own territory? We don’t even recall Hitler trying that one.

Oleksandr Turchynov’s conscription order marked a turnaround for the country, which last year announced plans to end military conscription in favor of an all-volunteer force…

Isn’t it handy how the Putin stooge who was running Ukraine last year did away with the draft?

Meanwhile, there is this development from BBC News:

Ukraine crisis: Sloviansk rebels down army helicopters

2 May 2014

Pro-Russian rebels have shot down two of Ukraine’s army helicopters during an "anti-terror" operation in the eastern city of Sloviansk, Kiev has said. It said a pilot and serviceman had been killed, four suspected separatists held and 10 rebel checkpoints seized. Half of the city was later declared "under control" of the Ukrainian units.

There has been no independent confirmation of the claim. Separatists at three checkpoints earlier told the BBC they were still in control there. Russia said the use of the army by Kiev against its own people "is leading Ukraine to catastrophe"…

It is unreal what we are witnessing as we approach the 100 year anniversary of the start of World War One. Lest we forget, on 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, were shot dead in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was one of a group of six assassins (five Serbs and one Bosnian Muslim).

Princip was a self-described radical anarchist, who wanted to ‘destroy the system.’ Princip and his fellow conspirators believed in what was called at the time, ‘Russian Socialism.’ And, in fact, Russian army officers helped arrange the assassination plot, via the Black Hand. In fact, the Russian military really brought on the whole war.

Proving, once again, that while history might not repeat itself, stupidity sure does.
