US soldier removed from Iraq for shooting at Quran

BAGHDAD - An American sniper was removed from Iraq after he used a copy of the Quran for target practice, the military said Sunday, a day after a U.S. commander held a formal ceremony apologizing to Sunni tribal leaders.
The elaborate ceremony — in which one U.S. officer kissed a new copy of Islam’s holy book before giving it to the tribal leaders — reflected the military’s eagerness to stave off anger among Sunni Arabs it has been cultivating as allies.
The tribesmen have become key in the fight against al-Qaida in Iraq militants, who depict the American forces as anti-Islamic occupiers. One anti-U.S. Iraqi Sunni group condemned the Quran shooting, calling it “a hideous act.” Similar perceived insults to Islam have triggered protests throughout the Muslim world.
Iraqi police found the bullet-riddled Quran with graffiti inside the cover on a firing range near a police station in Radwaniyah, a former insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad, U.S. military spokesman Col. Bill Buckner said.
American commanders launched an inquiry that led to disciplinary action against the unidentified soldier, who has been removed from Iraq, Buckner said.
Members of the local U.S.-allied group said the Quran was found with 14 bullet holes in a field after U.S. troops withdrew from a base in the area.
Sheik Ahmed Khudayer al-Janabi, a local tribal leader, said the group had planned a protest march last Thursday but called it off under pressure from U.S. forces and to prevent any insurgent violence as retaliation.
The incident, which occurred on May 9 and was discovered two days later, was first reported by CNN, which broadcast a ceremony at which the top American commander in Baghdad apologized to tribal leaders Saturday in Radwaniyah. The military confirmed the details Sunday in an e-mailed response to a query.
“I come before you here seeking your forgiveness,” Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond was quoted as saying at the ceremony. “In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my soldiers.”
“The actions of one soldier were nothing more than criminal behavior,” he added. “I’ve come to this land to protect you, to support you — not to harm you — and the behavior of this soldier was nothing short of wrong and unacceptable.”
The commander also read a letter of apology by the shooter, who has not been identified, while another military official kissed a Quran and presented it to the tribal leaders, according to CNN.
Tribal leaders, dignitaries and local security officials attended the ceremony, while protesters carried banners and chanted slogans, including “Yes, yes to the Quran” and “America out, out.”
The military statement called the incident “serious and deeply troubling” but stressed it was the result of one soldier’s actions and “not representative of the professionalism of our soldiers or the respect they have for all faiths.”
The hard-line Association of Muslim Scholars condemned the shooting and what it said was a belated acknowledgment of the incident, calling it “a hideous act against the book of almighty God and the constitution of the nation and the source of its glory and dignity.” …
Sheik Eid Majid al-Zubaie, the preacher at the Radwaniyah mosque, said local leaders were outraged over the discovery of the Quran, which he said was shot through and had big dark X’s and other graffiti on the pages. But he said they had accepted the military’s apology.
“There is not any difference between this soldier and the figure in Denmark who made the caricature drawings against the Prophet Muhammad,” al-Zubaie said. “But they apologized and expelled the soldier.” …
Sheesh. The things you have to do to win a war.
Never mind that so much of our blood and treasure has been spent to help these miserable ingrates.
Maybe they need to be gently reminded of that.

Thanks SJ. Still got a long way to go. The doctor said it would be 6 months to a year to totaly heal. But it could have been a lot worse, the alternative has no attraction to me at all.

The mistake that the soldier made is simple, He should have destroyed the evidence, He made our proud members of the armed forces jobs harder.
What little help our soldiers may gain from the Iraqis could have been compromised, They count on informers and this could cost our men and women dearly.
You all know me, and in no way do I give a flying crap about the book they hold so dear, hell I can’t walk through a book store without wiping a booger on a quran, but this soldier should have known better.

You have a good point Dez. Right or wrong, it was a bonehead move. Our good soldiers have to know those folks have no sense of humor regarding the symbols of their faith. There are good guys that we need to fight along side us, and ultimately, carry on the fight after we leave. No reason to needlessly p#$$ off the patriots. My biggest regret is we lost that soldier for the duration. 14 holes? that’s some d@#n fine shooting.

Do we have any business considering these people our allies? If these jackass Mooslimes are going to switch sides over some guy shooting up a book, then we have no business considering them an ally in the first place. It just shows that we have but only 2 options. the first is total victory and the 2nd is to get used to capitulating every time one of these bastards raises their “we are offended” flag. I prefer to go down fighting, but I guess if the rest of the U.S. wants to roll over every time these asshats feign incredulence, then I will just have to buy some land in Montana.

Actually I think this soldier is a darn genius. If you want to get home for the summer shoot a Koran. It’s obvious that our “brilliant” commanders in the field and politicians aren’t helping out in THAT respect. So Kudos to you soldier and I concur we need to shoot a LOT more Korans but with the A-holes holding them. Bet that would get almost ALL of your men and women back a lot sooner! Whoa wait a minute - first this is Associated (with terrorists) Press. You must take into consideration this - AP is the one who started the 6 people killed at a mosque based on a ‘local witness’ garbage that was a kickoff to the Baghdad mess a few years ago - turned out the guy wasn’t who AP claimed he was - it was False.
And don’t forget the Time/Haditha mess that also started with the ‘claim’ from a ‘local human rights group’ who turned out (gee am I getting repetious?!?) not to be who Time claimed he was- The claim was False.
And now here we are, OIF has turned around, Anbar - probably the worst province for most of the war - is coming around, al-Sadr is hiding (if not dying/dead) in Iran and, oh btw there is a US election - what better way to turn the stupid masses against the war (which of course was a GWB thing - let’s vote him out of office) and add one more thing to 1) demean the Troops, 2) tarnish the War and all efforts and successes already done, 3) imply that all US forces are stupid, criminal, and anti-islam and 4) of course the winner - make American Soldiers apologize to the muslim whiners of the world.
How are we to really know that this wasn’t some good holy muslim jihadist who 1) held the book up to take incoming bullets (rather than himself), 2) threw it away after it took incoming bullets or (my choice) 3) set up by some infidel/American (sorry I’m being redundant, again) hating jihadist planted event to once again create chaos, violence and the ever popular American soldier/war hating in Iraq. . .

This type of display really rankles my hide.
We have these (sorry george) appeasers calling islam the relgion of peace - huh? they have been at war for 1500 years with each other; and with most anyone else since aprox. 1920’s.
At Guantanamo they give Koran’s to prisoners wearing white gloves so the book isn’t soiled by infidel hands; now we are kissing the manual of death. They seem to think they are going to win these morons over with respect when all it shows is ‘weakness’ to their way of thinking.
We can’t go into a Mosque out of (outraging morons) respect; but they can blow them up without a thought to respect.

I feel Americans should be intelligent enough to respect the sensitivities in other people’s countries. Do you like it so much when somebody else shoots up your Holy Bible? It is not wrong to be a conservative, but some of the prevailing attitudes I observe on this blog can indeed explain why things like 911 happen; of course there will always be some people who hate you, but with arrogance and being condescending towards other cultures and peoples, you’ll invite more.

I think people need to be more prudent when it comes to addressing Islam and Muslims and other unfamiliar faiths. For non-believers (and even some of the believers themselves), the situation is understandably confusing: there are the militants, and there are those who are peaceful practioners of the religion/way of life. Even though I do not claim to really understand the religion, I would rather side with the non-militants rather than condemning the whole lot. Muslims as a collective term right now, does not represent a homogeneous group of people, it is just unfortunate that the militants seem to have hijacked their representation to a fairly large extent in the West. Fair enough, if you want to pinpoint the real enemies, but prior to that, maybe check with the Muslims amongst Americans.

It was not posted out of respect for the muslim holy book or muslims themselves, It was posted out of concern for our troops, The soldier that shot up the book can sit down and drink a beer with me any day.
But for now, our men and women do need to think wisely, like it or not, our troops are fighting beside Iraqi soldiers.
I like the rest of the above posters are more disgusted by the ass kissing that has followed what should be a non incident.
Regardless, DW is one of the more understanding and polite posters we have to offer.
He most certainly does not require my assistance in his defence, He is perfectly capable of that on his own.
What chafes his ass and every ones ass is that we are not only expected to bend over backwards and spill the blood of our most precious resources for a bunch of introverts that value a book over a life.

These Muslims burn bibles, effigies of the pope, and of our President every day. Yet, we are the ones that are supposed to apologize? Until the “peace loving” element of their societies afford us the same respect for our customs, then it is safe to assume that these “peace lovers” agree in part and parcel to the actions of their extremist bretheren. If they won’t rein in their whackjobs, then we need not both to rein in ours.
and FWIW, I am probably one of the few conservatives who does not believe in any religion at all, so for all I care, they can shoot all the bibles, korans, toras, buddist manuscripts, et al that they want.

I have neighbors from Pakistan. They are devout Muslim. They bring food over now and again (the chicken and rice curry with cayene pepper is the bomb). In speaking with them, they HATE the idea of Bhuto or anyone associated with her. They come from a wealthy family (they say their dad owns an “oil factory.” I thought this was cute they way they phrase it).
What is my point? Well, I think that there are indeed Muslims who have rational world view. My neighbors share a lot of the same politic that I do. Maybe we are not that different when I think about it. Because, what pisses me off, about their culture, and ours, is that we tolerate extremists. My neighbors don’t like…actually hate…what muslim terrorists do…but they sit here in the U.S. doing nothing to influence change in the status quo. And here in the U.S., we tolerate, no, encourage tolerance as well. In fact, I could almost argue that my neighbors are the lesser of two evils. Think about it. While they profess a hatred of the behavior of the extremists in their society and do nothing to protest, we, here in the U.S., have actually embraced this crazy culture where in, we are required to be tolerant…where we are required to be Politically Correct, where, we don’ just look the other way, in fact, we go out of our way to accommodate behavior that runs counter to a universal sense of right and wrong. While they look he other way and ignore, we force acceptance of difference down our own throats and castigate anyone who won’t swallow. We, by allowing liberals to dictate what we can and can not believe, are doing less to take the higher ground than those who simply look the other way.
What happened to those days of “live free of die” and “don’t tread on me?” This middle ground is a guaranteed way to ensure that everyone loses equally. How the fuck did we get to the point that such a concept was not only an acceptable risk, but actually embraced as the end game goal.
I think I will have another gin now.

The subject would take volumes to debate. In fact i have read and studied for 8 years now, the history, the qoran, the headlines.
I recall apologizing repeatedly when writting blog comments because I would have forgotten to preceed any written text regarding violent Islam/muslim/arab/ with specificity like, ‘extremist’/muslim/ or fundamentalist/arab/ . The protesters of excluseivness would state not all ‘muslims’ are like these extremists. Not all islam is violent. At the time i corrected myself. After all with over a billion of them, and only a reported 15-20% being radical extremists, that left 800 million of moderate peaceniks following the book. (btw- using these statistics means there are aproximately 600,000 extremists, of the 4 million, residing in the USA and ready for you and i to understand the religion.)
Over the years I no longer bother to use appeasing differentials between militants and peace lovers of islam.
Look around the world. Most of the violence and death and inhumane practices are coming from the book of peace and love.
Look at the USA Arab and Muslim lobbies - you will see the Islamification acomin’ .
In 10 years the muslim will have more population than the jewish population - watch the liberals voting block switch and begin the ‘changes’.
If 800 million moderate Muslims/arabs/etc./ won’t speak up - and can not stop, negotiate, or nuetralize radical fundamentals through their teachings then they will be assimilated and be asborbed themselves like sheep into the flock of the violent dominates. We, non believers, think their silence is fear.
But their is a more dominate feature of their silence then fear. It is the letter of the religion they practice itself. The qoranic belief itself obligates these moderates to listen to the militants as they aborgate muhammeds words. To do otherwise is to apostate oneself. We think these fundamental maniacs are insane and their practices are inhumane. What we do not seem to consider is the ’source’ which explains in great details exactly ‘why’ the practice of this type of islam is Islam, and why 800 million moderates, thru koranic verse, can not repudiate without contradicting ‘the source.’
The ’source’ requires complete surrender to islam and the entire world is it’s battleground and prize.
Thankfully their are a few who do stand up - who will try to point out the peaceful language, used here and there, to try to bring the religion into the 21 century. To evolve and adjust. Unfortunately there are more who will kill them for doing so and the few become fewer.
Setting aside complete extermination, the moderates must over rule these extremist with a ‘peaceful’ interpetation of the quoran, teach it’s peoples such, and administer swift punishment to extremists through ‘criminalization’, or no war nor politics will ever wipe out this militant religion which is also LAW.
I in no way can explain nor convince you. You will have to read for 8 years and still come away scratchin your head tryin to understand this illogiocal phenomenon. i’m not a good writer so i would never explain the basis of my concern without writting in ways that would make me appear arrogant and condesending. What is the new form of rhetoric to silence my types of rejection? Islamophobia.

arkansaw……appeasers always tremble and hope that the enemy at the gates will let them live if they engage in meaningful dialogue and remain tolerant to the point of being ludicrous………especially with islam. muslims need people who castigate their own in a vain attempt to appear peaceful.
The religion of peace will kill you the very first chance they get, they will kill your family, they will kill everyone in your neighborhood, your city, your county, and your entire state if they are given the chance.

The good thing is…..muslims enjoy killing appeasers. Save your criticism for a group that remains as ignorant as you. islam is to religion as Ebola is to viral infections. They both cause lingering death upon exposure, and the only apparent cure is eradication.
I could give two shits about offending muslims. They are offended by literally everything. They are like spoiled two year olds screeching when they dont get their way.
