Charlie Rangel To Re-Introduce Draft Bill

From The Hill:

Rangel to reintroduce military draft measure

By Susan Crabtree

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) likely will introduce his controversial legislation to reinstate the draft again this year, but he will wait until after the economic stimulus package is passed.

Asked if he plans to introduce the legislation again in 2009, Rangel last week said, “Probably … yes. I don’t want to do anything this early to distract from the issue of the economic stimulus.”

Republicans are likely to seize on the reintroduction of Rangel’s unpopular military draft bill. When they controlled the House in 2004, Republicans scheduled a vote on the Rangel measure, which was defeated 402-2. Reps. John Murtha (D-Pa.) and Pete Stark (D-Calif.) supported it, while Rangel voted against his own bill, claiming the GOP was playing political games.

But Rangel told The Hill that he recently heard talk about rewarding mandatory service with two years of college credit.

“That doesn’t make sense,” he said. “People shouldn’t have to join the military to get an education.” …

With the Iraq war off the front page and the economic crisis taking center stage, nerves are not as raw on the topic of strain on the military as they were a few years ago, so Rangel’s legislation may not make as many waves this time around.

But some Democrats — even one who supported Rangel’s efforts in the past — are a little perplexed about his plans to reintroduce the legislation, especially now that President-elect Obama is poised to take over the White House

Where is the outrage?

But it’s not like he hasn’t been promising this for years?

“Let’s go, men!” cried Sgt Rangel, as shells exploded all around the combat happy Joes of Easy Company. “Take the high ground!”

    “Aren’t you coming, Sarge?”

“Um, not exactly. I’m meeting with my attorneys to discuss how I’m going to avoid indictment over this tax thing. But you guys, you glorious, crazy doughboys, you go ahead – now move out!”

    “Um, okay…I guess”.

  2. proreason says:

Go for it Charley!! Why not 4 years?

But among the politicos of the better race, he is the dimmest bulb (and there are some weakly flickering lights in that group). His attempt to punish the children of white people will be cast aside in favor of Obamy’s Brown Shirts.

  3. Confucius says:

I can’t wait for the youth, who overwhelmingly vote Democrat, to find out they’ve punk’d themselves.

    Isn’t karma delicious?

I was going to say exactly that … it’s okay to vote for the messiah, it’s another to serve in the military with him as Commander-in-Chief. Guess he fails to inspire in that arena.

There is already the GI Bill for college funding, so no new enticements there.

  4. dulcimergrl says:

I’m pertty new to this-here politics thing ;-). Can someone please explain why ol’ Charlie is pushing to reinstate the draft? I’m gen-u-wine-ley confused.

    • Colonel1961 says:

His ‘logic’ is that the draw of ‘free’ college is so strong that poor people (read: blacks) will have no choice but to risk their lives by joining the services. So, introducing draft (conscription) legislation is a preemptive move to get more funding for ‘free’ college for poor people.

How cruel? People serving their country? Outrageous! I know that my Father (who tried to lie about his age to enlist in WWII, later got a great stateside assignment out of USMA but pleaded for a change of assignment and then fought in Korea, and years later tried to leave an 06 office job and learn to fly helicopters at age 46 to fulfill a pilot shortage in Vietnam, etc.) did quite well in service to our Country. Not only in the services, but after, as well…

Rangel’s comments, and his basis thereof, are an affront to all who have served and all Americans period.

    • dulcimergrl says:

I guess I don’t have a criminal mind–I can’t get my arms around such twisted logic!

In my family, my Dad served in the Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard (his headstone reads “WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm), although he never was in combat for any of those things. My uncle served in the Navy on a sea-going tug; my brother-in-law was a Marine sniper in Korea; my older brother was a Seabee in the Navy; and my younger brother did some kind of military intelligence in the Air Force (he still can’t talk about it). My son is serving right now in the Air Force Reserve, which paid his college tuition and enabled him to get a good job and the start of a wonderful career. All of them were/are proud to serve, and as far as I know, my BIL is the only one who truly risked his life.

Doesn’t this STUPID Rangel know that other countries will take America as a threat and is preparing for war?
Being a WW2 combat veteran, I am VERY angry at this stupid jerk!!!

The draft will only cause a military build up in other countries and eventually could trigger a conflict.
    Rangel is a JERK!

    • JohnMG says:

If anybody is playing games with this issue it is Rangel.

Think of it. With all-volunteer forces, the services are only taking HS grads and a few with GED’s who have college credits. These are the people who then qualify for the GI Bill benefits. (Get ready to call me a racist/bigot.) Think of the number of blacks who drop out of school and thus don’t qualify for military service. Connect the dots.
The military is “discriminating’ against a vast number of the population. But the draft could fix all this.

If I were that douche bag, Rangel, I’d keep my mouth shut. His tax problem could end up in front of the US Supreme Court. How much publicity can he possibly want?

Before anyone goes off half-cocked, I’m not saying that black=stupid. What I am saying in this case is, stupid definitely=black!

  6. U NO HOO says:

“Rangel voted against his own bill, claiming the GOP was playing political games.”

Governor Sped Spendwell in PA vetoed his own budget when the Republicans passed it in the legislature.

    Who is playing games?

I think of the draft as SLAVERY.

    PS, I’m white.

    • Liberals Demise says:

You sir don’t count. Slavery is ONLY FOR BLACKS. The blacks have cornered the market on slavery but you can plea that you are a racist. Blacks haven’t yet cornered that market but are well on their way for the lead soon!

  7. 12 Gauge Rage says:

The draft is nothing more than forced conscription. Even with an all volunteer force there were those within the ranks who had second thoughts about what they’d done and were counting down the days when they could get out. What will our armed forces be like when we have hundreds of thousands of men and women who don’t want to be there? And like the draft of years gone by, not everyone called up will serve because they’ll either flee to Canada or get deferments.

    • JohnMG says:

I served with a few draftees. They were, for the most part, fine people. And yes, there were lots of enlistees in teh Marines who couldn’t wait to get out. But with the advent of the all-volunteer services, one thing was certain. At one point in time, every one of those in the ranks ELECTED to be there. This speaks well of each of them–even the ones who wished otherwise after the fact. I’m proud of them all, regardless of their motivations. Rangel’s motives are suspect.

  8. Flession says:

Does anyone else remember how Kerry tried to scare people into thinking that Bush was going to bring back the draft 4 years ago?

And how everyone was in shock & outrage?

Noticing quite a lack of outrage right now. Must be the Power of the Donkey(TM)

  9. Lipstick on a PIAPS says:

He is introducing the Draft so America will be against the Global War on Terrorism. Remember the only REAL PATRIOTS are the ones who pay taxes, unless you are the nominee for Secretary of Treasury then it’s “different”. LMAO

  10. Fergurg says:

I remember Rangle being interviewed on NPR back in 2006. He said quite a few disturbing things, the least of which was that with a reinstated draft, there would be more people actively opposing the War on Terror.

He also said he wanted to lower the pay for enlistees and eliminate the GI Bill in order to make joining the military a less attractive option for poor minority people.

    • proreason says:

Being a nut is the norm now for liberals. Rangle is mainstream.

The inmates are running the assylum.
