I remember Rangle being interviewed on NPR back in 2006. He said quite a few disturbing things, the least of which was that with a reinstated draft, there would be more people actively opposing the War on Terror.

He also said he wanted to lower the pay for enlistees and eliminate the GI Bill in order to make joining the military a less attractive option for poor minority people.

I served with a few draftees. They were, for the most part, fine people. And yes, there were lots of enlistees in teh Marines who couldn’t wait to get out. But with the advent of the all-volunteer services, one thing was certain. At one point in time, every one of those in the ranks ELECTED to be there. This speaks well of each of them–even the ones who wished otherwise after the fact. I’m proud of them all, regardless of their motivations. Rangel’s motives are suspect.

The draft is nothing more than forced conscription. Even with an all volunteer force there were those within the ranks who had second thoughts about what they’d done and were counting down the days when they could get out. What will our armed forces be like when we have hundreds of thousands of men and women who don’t want to be there? And like the draft of years gone by, not everyone called up will serve because they’ll either flee to Canada or get deferments.

If anybody is playing games with this issue it is Rangel.

Think of it. With all-volunteer forces, the services are only taking HS grads and a few with GED’s who have college credits. These are the people who then qualify for the GI Bill benefits. (Get ready to call me a racist/bigot.) Think of the number of blacks who drop out of school and thus don’t qualify for military service. Connect the dots.
The military is “discriminating’ against a vast number of the population. But the draft could fix all this.

If I were that douche bag, Rangel, I’d keep my mouth shut. His tax problem could end up in front of the US Supreme Court. How much publicity can he possibly want?

Before anyone goes off half-cocked, I’m not saying that black=stupid. What I am saying in this case is, stupid definitely=black!

Governor Sped Spendwell in PA vetoed his own budget when the Republicans passed it in the legislature.

Who is playing games?

Doesn’t this STUPID Rangel know that other countries will take America as a threat and is preparing for war?
Being a WW2 combat veteran, I am VERY angry at this stupid jerk!!!

The draft will only cause a military build up in other countries and eventually could trigger a conflict.

I guess I don’t have a criminal mind–I can’t get my arms around such twisted logic!

In my family, my Dad served in the Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard (his headstone reads “WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm), although he never was in combat for any of those things. My uncle served in the Navy on a sea-going tug; my brother-in-law was a Marine sniper in Korea; my older brother was a Seabee in the Navy; and my younger brother did some kind of military intelligence in the Air Force (he still can’t talk about it). My son is serving right now in the Air Force Reserve, which paid his college tuition and enabled him to get a good job and the start of a wonderful career. All of them were/are proud to serve, and as far as I know, my BIL is the only one who truly risked his life.

I was going to say exactly that … it’s okay to vote for the messiah, it’s another to serve in the military with him as Commander-in-Chief. Guess he fails to inspire in that arena.

There is already the GI Bill for college funding, so no new enticements there.

His ‘logic’ is that the draw of ‘free’ college is so strong that poor people (read: blacks) will have no choice but to risk their lives by joining the services. So, introducing draft (conscription) legislation is a preemptive move to get more funding for ‘free’ college for poor people.

How cruel? People serving their country? Outrageous! I know that my Father (who tried to lie about his age to enlist in WWII, later got a great stateside assignment out of USMA but pleaded for a change of assignment and then fought in Korea, and years later tried to leave an 06 office job and learn to fly helicopters at age 46 to fulfill a pilot shortage in Vietnam, etc.) did quite well in service to our Country. Not only in the services, but after, as well…

Rangel’s comments, and his basis thereof, are an affront to all who have served and all Americans period.
