Rangel ‘Tweets’ Audio Defense Message

From The Hill’s Twitter Room:

Rangel tweets statement in defense of charges, audio message to supporters

By Elise Viebeck – 08/01/10

Embattled New York congressman Charles Rangel (D) tweeted an audio message Sunday afternoon explaining to supporters the status of an action against him in the House Ethics Committee.

Rangel’s message was as follows:

Hi, this is Congressman Charlie Rangel and I really wanted to take this opportunity just to bring a few facts to your attention.

As you know the Ethics Committee Procedure is underway and that I initiated it.

I hope that the Ethics Committee process will move forward without a rush to judgment.

I’ve discovered some of the mistakes I’ve made [unintelligible] and my answers to the allegations can be found on my website at www.rangel.house.gov.

I really believe that I’ve made some difference in the Congress and I just won’t stop fighting until I’ve had a fair and open hearing.

So, thank you for the support and I won’t let you down.

Two hours beforehand, he had tweeted the link to a 32-page PDF document signed by his lawyers that addresses the charges leveled by the committee on Thursday.

"The undisputed evidence in the record — assembled by the Investigative Subcommittee over its nearly two-year investigation — is that Congressman Rangel did not dispense any political favors, that he did not intentionally violate any law, rule or regulation, and that he did not misuse his public office for private gain," the statement reads

And we believe him. After all, why would he lie?

By the way, try using ‘Rangel rules’ the next time you fail to report $800,000 on your income taxes, and see where it gets you.

Dem leaders, donors to hold Rangel birthday bash at The Plaza

By Alexander Bolton – 07/31/10

Democratic leaders and major party donors plan to hold a lavish 80th birthday gala for Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan next month, despite 13 ethics charges pending against the veteran lawmaker.

Lobbyists and other party donors received invitations this week to join Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and New York Gov. David Paterson (D) at one of New York’s finest hotels to celebrate Rangel’s birthday.

Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg are also listed as featured guests, according to an invitation viewed by The Hill

Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” will sing to guests, who will pay $200, $500, $1,000 or $2,500 for tickets. The money will go to the Rangel Victory Fund, a campaign account.

Or, failing that, ‘the Rangel pocket.’

The 2010 Rangel Birthday Gala is planned for Aug. 11 despite the fact that Rangel’s actual birthday is June 11

Schumer gave $10,000 from his leadership political action committee to Rangel’s campaign account at the end of June

A Democratic lobbyist invited to the event said the Democratic political hierarchy in New York is still behind Rangel.

“Charlie Rangel is going to get re-elected, unless he gets expelled from Congress,” said the lobbyist. “This shows his level of support in New York.”

And even if he is expelled from Congress, Mr. Rangel would still probably be re-elected by his devoted constituents. (Cf. his predecessor, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.)

Nevertheless, it’s good to see that poster boy man for Democrat ethics isn’t allowing these frivolous charges get him down.
