Rasmussen: 66% Say America Overtaxed

From Rasmussen:

66% Say America Is Overtaxed

Sunday, April 11, 2010

When thinking about all the services provided by federal, state and local governments, 75% of voters nationwide say the average American should pay no more than 20% of their income in taxes. However, the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that most voters (55%) believe the average American actually pays 30% or more of their income in taxes.

Sixty-six percent (66%) believe that America is overtaxed. Only 25% disagree.

We have to admit to being pleasantly surprised by this result.

Since, as we have previously noted, fewer than 47% of the populace pay any income tax.

Lower income voters are more likely than others to believe the nation is overtaxed

It is especially astonishing to see that “lower income voters are more likely than others to believe the nation is overtaxed.” But then again, there are more taxes than just the income tax.

And lower income people feel any tax bite more than the rest, if and when they are bit.

Eighty-one percent (81%) of Republicans believe the nation is overtaxed. So do 73% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Democrats are evenly divided on the question.

Among those who consider themselves part of the Tea Party movement, 96% believe the nation is overtaxed, and only one percent (1%) disagree.

Why are these 1% associated with a party that calls itself ‘Taxed Enough Already’?

These figures help explain why candidate Barack Obama promised to cut taxes for 95% of all Americans during Election 2008

Currently, only eight percent (8%) believe their taxes will be cut during the Obama presidency, while 46% expect a tax hike

As we noted at the time, back in February Mr. Obama promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of his term – while lowering taxes.

No wonder people are growing a little skeptical.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of voters trust Republicans more than Democrats on the issue of taxes. Thirty-four percent (34%) trust Democrats more on the issue. Republicans also are trusted more on health care and the economy.

Sixty-five percent (65%) believe that the middle class pays a larger share of their income in taxes than the wealthy. A national sales tax remains unpopular, and most oppose ‘sin taxes’ on junk food and soft drinks.

Just 23% of voters favor a more active government with more services and higher taxes.

These 23% must be what used to be called in less sensitive times, ‘congenital idiots.’

But what about all those wonderful government services we get for our tax money.

And where is the compassion for the government employees who slave so hard to keep us happy.

    Nobody appreciates anything anymore.

…only eight percent (8%) believe their taxes will be cut during the Obama presidency…

What are they smoking? It can’t be legal.

    • GL0120 says:

What do you mean it can’t be legal?
If it helps people to swallow the nonsense that’s peddled by the media and the democrats (Wait a second, why did I separate them?) then it’s not only legal but will soon be required.
What better way to keep the country happy than to keep the people stoned?

  3. confucius says:

    66%? That’s all?!

    • Right of the People says:

They must have run the poll at a Democrap fund raiser otherwise the numbers would have been higher.

  4. Catwoman59 says:

The only flaw I see with this story is that the 66% who think we’re overtaxed probably don’t seem to think multi-millionaires are overtaxed. Was that question asked?

Until everyone is paying some degree of federal income tax, the bottom 47% who do not will not see how ‘soaking the rich’ and minimum wage laws actually hurt their own work prospects and future prosperity, I’m not sure this poll was really much more than an exercise in protest.

Legitimate protest to be sure, but it just seems to me that we’re only getting half the story.

  5. Perdido says:

So, 47% are not paying Federal Income Taxes. That’s good.

We need to get to work on getting the other 53% tax free too.

Hold the Fed to the taxation provided for in the Constitution and all this nonsense goes away.
