The Telegraph: Mandela memorial service: Cameron, Obama and Rouhani among 50 leaders to attend

    Dec 8 2013

At least 50 world leaders, including Barack Obama, David Cameron and the president of Iran, will join global stars such as Bono, Oprah Winfrey and the Spice Girls at an extraordinary four-hour memorial service to honour Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

One of the biggest gatherings of heads of state, religious leaders and celebrities the world has ever seen will take place in a 95,000-seater football stadium in the township of Soweto.

President Obama is likely to deliver an address at the event, while some of the globally-renowned pop stars attending may also perform, although the programme[sic] remains a closely-guarded secret.

The memorial service throws up almost unheard-of challenges for the South African government and the international security services mandated to protect their VIPs.

The government has confirmed that any member of the public is welcome to the stadium without prior accreditation.

The Prince met Mr Mandela on a number of occasions in both Britain and South Africa, most notably during a “very enjoyable” joint visit in Johannesburg with the Spice Girls in 1997.

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader who met Mr Mandela in Cape Town in 1996, will not attend.

He has twice been refused a visa by South Africa, which is keen to court China as a strategic ally, although his spokesman has refused to say if he feared the same would happen again.

The prospect has already generated outrage in the hardline Iranian media. Tehran’s Kayhan newspaper carried a headline today which read:

“Satan lays a trap, this time in Johannesburg”.

Meanwhile, Hassan Rouhani, the new Iranian president, has said he will be at Tuesday’s memorial service, along with … Ji Xinping, the Chinese president and Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Sri Lankan president who recently, controversially hosted the commonwealth summit despite concerns over human rights abuses.

I can imagine all these leaders bringing their international security with them.

The Guardian: Nelson Mandela funeral preparations put authorities under pressure

By Tracy McVeigh Dec 8 2013

An unprecedented number of foreign journalists and foreign dignitaries have arrived in the country along with tourists to witness what will be a historic event.

A broken printer meant waiting for two to four hours for the all-important yellow photographic credentials.

The vast car park was a bedlam of swearing in many languages, with one or two journalists from local media skipping the queue by appealing to officials in Xhosa and Afrikaans.

“This is African time, little angry one,” said a Johannesburg radio reporter from Jacaranda FM, pushing past a Japanese television producer.

    Tempers were fraying.

A harried official at the centre, who was not happy to be named, said: “We had four years to prepare for the World Cup but only months to prepare to lose Madiba. No, I cannot tell you how many we have processed and I cannot tell you how many are still to be processed. Perhaps you would like to do this?”

An enterprising ice cream seller was soon on the scene.

There were tensions between media outlets at some church events as cameras could barely film without getting another camera in the shot.

Plans were drawn up a year ago for the event, but the numbers appear to have shaken even the best-laid plans.

The message arrived along with promises that at least 90 giant screens would be set up at “official mourning sites” in all of South Africa’s provinces.

Noxolo Kiviet, premier of the Eastern Cape, said the electricity, banking and retail sectors were ready for the influx, but there was little accommodation.

“I appeal to Eastern Cape citizens to open their homes and accommodate visitors to our province.”

That request may have been heeded already.

Thinus Ferreira, a South African blogger, claimed that Qunu residents were charging reporters 10 rand (about 60p) to use their long drop, or earth ditch, toilets.

When Mandela reaches his final resting place on Sunday, it is believed his gravestone will convey a simplicity his funeral cannot. He asked for it to be inscribed with just the word Mandela.

“…Qunu residents were charging reporters 10 rand (about 60p) to use their long drop, or earth ditch, toilets.”

Save these news global terms “long drop”, “earth ditch”, “toilet” as digging sewer systems are not the number one reason for earthquakes in the USA.

A reminder of how Obama and the Democrats truly feel about the military.

    From Hawaii News Now:

Air Guard denied request to fly over Pearl Harbor

    HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) –
The missing man flyover at Pearl Harbor is a tradition USS Arizona and National Park Service historian Daniel Martinez has witnessed every December 7 since 1985.

“When you see that aircraft apart in that missing man formation, every one of us individualize what that means,” he said.

But that emotion won’t be there this year. The F-22 Raptors piloted by the Hawaii Air National Guard are under orders not to perform.

There have been restrictions on all kinds of flyovers across the country. We were not able to get an exception of policy to do this one,” Hawaii National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Chuck Anthony said.

Pearl Harbor survivors are understandably upset.

“I’m totally disgusted. The one day of the year when we’re honoring our military from World War II,” said retired U.S. Army Sgt. Allen Bodenlos. …

Thank you, Mr. President. I hope you enjoy your taxpayer-funded trip to South Africa.

President Obama planning annual Hawaiian holiday

    HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) –
The White House hasn’t officially announced their plans yet, but Hawaii News Now has learned the Obamas will vacation here over the holidays. This will be the First Family’s sixth Christmas in Hawaii since he was elected president, and keeping with tradition they are expected to spend it in Kailua. …

The Guardian: Satanists plan statue to stand alongside Ten Commandments in Oklahoma

    AP in Oklahoma City/ theguardian.com, 8 Dec 2013

In their zeal to tout their faith in the public square, conservatives in Oklahoma may have unwittingly opened the door to a wide range of religious groups, including Satanists who are seeking to put their own statue next to a Ten Commandments monument outside the statehouse.

The Republican-controlled legislature in the state known as the buckle of the Bible Belt authorised[sic] the privately funded Ten Commandments monument in 2009.

The Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit seeking its removal.

But the New York-based Satanic Temple saw an opportunity. It notified the state’s Capitol Preservation Commission that it wants to donate a monument and plans to submit one of several possible designs this month, said Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the temple.

Greaves said one potential design involves a pentagram, a satanic symbol, while another is meant to be an interactive display for children.

Brady Henderson, the legal director for ACLU Oklahoma, said if state officials allow one type of religious expression, they must allow alternative forms of expression, although he said a better solution might be to allow none at all on state property.

“But if the Ten Commandments, with its overtly Christian message, is allowed to stay at the Capitol, the Satanic Temple’s proposed monument cannot be rejected because of its different religious viewpoint.”

US President Obama orders killing endangered American Bald Eagles

OBAMA ADMIN. GIVES CERTAIN COMPANIES PERMISSION TO MAIM OR KILL ENDANGERED EAGLES
Dec. 6, 2013 By Becket Adams

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) – The Obama administration announced Friday that it will allow certain companies to kill or main bald and golden eagles for up to 30 years without the fear of prosecution.

The new rule is designed to address environmental consequences that some say have hindered attempts to grow the “green” energy industry: the dozens of bald and golden eagles being killed each year by the giant, spinning blades of wind turbines.

The regulation, which was published Friday, was not subjected to a full environmental review because the administration classified it as an administrative change.

An investigation by The Associated Press earlier this year documented the illegal killing of eagles around wind farms, the Obama administration’s reluctance to prosecute such cases and its willingness to help keep the scope of the eagle deaths secret.

The permits would be reviewed every five years, and companies would have to submit reports of how many eagles they killed.

Now, such reporting is voluntary, and the Interior Department refuses to release the information.

Though the blades appear to move slowly, they can reach speeds of up to 170 mph at the tips, creating tornado-like vortexes.

A study by federal biologists in September found that wind farms since 2008 had killed at least 67 bald and golden eagles, a number that the researchers said was likely underestimated.

That did not include deaths at Altamont Pass, an area in northern California where wind farms kill an estimated 60 eagles a year.

Here’s a copy of the permitting rule:

The announcement comes on the heels of a recent Associated Press report that highlighted the environmental downsides to the Obama administrator’s pursuit of corn-based ethanol.

Is there any change Obama has made that hasn’t made him personally a hypocrite
