Reid: Obama Light-Skinned, No Dialect

From Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic:

The Juiciest Revelations In "Game Change"

Jan 8 2010, by Marc Ambinder

"Game Change," the long-awaited and very gossipy chronicle of the 2008 campaign by journalists John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, is chock full of revelations that are bound to stir the folks who live within ten miles of the Beltway — and perhaps even reverberate beyond Washington.

The book doesn’t officially go on sale until next Tuesday. The authors are slated to appear on 60 Minutes Sunday to preview it. I found it available for purchase at a Washington, D.C. bookstore tonight.

Among the more fascinating items:

On page 37, a remark, said "privately" by Sen. Harry Reid, about Barack Obama’s racial appeal. Though Reid would later say that he was neutral in the presidential race, the truth, the authors write, was that his

“encouragement of Obama was unequivocal. He was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama — a "light-skinned" African American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one," as he said privately.  Reid was convinced, in fact, that Obama’s race would help him more than hurt him in a bid for the Democratic nomination.”

In typical fashion, such news about Democrats only trickles out long after the fact on a late Friday night.

As for Mr. Reid’s support of Obama’s candidacy, as we recall, Reid’s eldest son was the chairman of Ms. Clinton’s campaign in Nevada.

Also in typical fashion, we are supposed to quickly forgive and forget because of a ‘apology’:

Reid Apologizes For "Negro" Remark

Jan 9 2010, by Marc Ambinder

Sen. Harry Reid’s office sends along this statement, confirming that Sen. Reid did refer to Barack Obama’s lack of a "Negro dialect" in private conversation and apologizing for it.

I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words. I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments. I was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama during the campaign and have worked as hard as I can to advance President Obama’s legislative agenda. Moreover, throughout my career, from efforts to integrate the Las Vegas strip and the gaming industry to opposing radical judges and promoting diversity in the Senate, I have worked hard to advance issues important to the African American community.”

And yet there is no mention of Mr. Reid resigning.

Which is odd, since Trent Lott was hounded from office for far less.

Of course Mr. Lott is a Republican.

But speaking of the double standards of our media masters

Don’t you think we would have heard about it, if George Bush, Mitt Romney or any Republican living had beaten up his prospective father in law — and then bragged about it regularly years later?

Well, Mr. Reid claims to have beaten up his father in law, who was Jewish, and who Reid alleges objected to his daughter marrying him because he was not Jewish.

It’s mentioned in several accounts.

First, in a December 2004 edition of Time Magazine:

The Democrats’ Hope in the Desert

By Joe Klein December 17, 2004

… Then, about five minutes into his answer to my question "Why did you become a Mormon?" Reid lets slip that he once got into a fistfight with his father-in-law-to-be, an observant Jew who opposed the marriage for religious reasons, and I realize how perfect both portraits are. Reid’s story is Twainian, a western desert tall tale, and his background is as brutal and hardscrabble as Jackson’s…

It is fleshed out on a website called The Tygrrrr Express, which describes Harry Reid appearing with (Meathead) Rob Reiner at UCLA in June 2008:

Meeting Harry Reid

… There were two stools on the stage, with Senator Reid occupying one, and actor and liberal activist Rob Reiner sitting on the other one. Reiner gained fame by playing the role of Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the historic sitcom “All in the family,” with Archie Bunker, played by the late Carroll O’Connor.

“My wife is Jewish. I am not sure if I had ever met a Jewish person before. Her parents were initially happy, because I was a football player, a boxer, and student body president. They were happy until things got serious. Then it all changed. Her father would not stop trying to break us up. Eventually, it got to the point where things happened. ‘Physical things’ happened.”

“We then eloped. Her parents said shiva (prayers of mourning), but then they were supportive. Once we were married, they decided to sit back and see if it would work. I had a good relationship with my father in law, and having to physically beat him up was “one of those things that happened.”

What a guy, huh?

From the keepers of the strong double standard AP:

Reid to Obama: Sorry for ‘no Negro dialect’ remark

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/201.....obama_reid

By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer Philip Elliott, Associated Press Writer – 13 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid apologized on Saturday for saying the race of Barack Obama — whom he described as a “light skinned” African-American “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one” — would help rather than hurt his eventual presidential bid.

Obama quickly accepted, saying “As far as I am concerned, the book is closed.” Reid, facing a tough re-election bid this year, spent the day telephoning civil rights leaders and fellow Democrats in hopes of mitigating the political damage.

The revelations about Reid’s 2008 comments were included in the book “Game Change” by Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin and New York magazine’s John Heilemann. The behind-the-scenes look at the 2008 campaign that elevated Obama to the White House is based on the writers’ interviews with more than 200 sources, most of whom were granted anonymity and thus much of the material could not be immediately corroborated.

OK, but don’t YOU do it. And besides, Harry fell on his sword repeatedly for the party agenda…that deserves the One’s reverence, does it not?

Also in the book as quoted from the article:

Hillary Rodham Clinton said she believed Obama’s team had used out-of-state supporters to win the Iowa caucuses and had intentionally exploited Obama’s race.

Obama and running mate Joe Biden barely spoke, kept separate schedules and seldom campaigned together. The campaign kept Biden off the nightly calls that included Obama, instead having the campaign manager and senior strategist brief Biden separately.

[Bill]Clinton told the Democratic lawmaker that just a few years ago, Obama would have been serving the pair coffee.

Reid’s office said he had also phoned to apologize to civil rights leaders, including the Rev. Al Sharpton; NAACP Chairman Julian Bond and Leadership Conference on Civil Rights president and chief executive officer Wade Henderson, as well as veteran political operative Donna Brazile. Reid also spoke with Reps. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., and Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., both African-Americans.

The leaders quickly fell in line supporting Reid.,

My god, it’s worse than I thought. They’re all robots.

I’m so glad you brought this up! I noticed that Reid’s comment was lead, (and the article was earlier today, and attached to an ‘apology’,) then it turned in to a skirmish with the Clinton’s, again… that’s what’s leading AOL, now. Makes you wonder who made the phone call…

Reid.. don’t make him look too bad.. he still has a chance.

Bill Clinton… can look bad because he is simply a distraction for Hillary.

It’s amazing how quick the MSM acts!

    • 2old2givea

It’s not possible to be a racist AND a Democrat elitist. “Racist” is a label only to be applied to Conservatives.

At least robots have an excuse for not thinking on their own. Lenin said those in the party were either the elitists or “useful idiots.” (Of course once your useful idiocy became unusable by them, they would throw them to the wolves – or “under the bus”, as the case may be.) I think we should resurrect Lenin’s “Useful Idiots” label.

Oh, and I’ll contribute to the list as this whole thing sounded familiar. From the Democrat Senator from West Virgina:

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side… Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”
      — Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944

“I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times… and I don’t mind apologizing over and over again. I can’t erase what happened. ”
      — Robert C. Byrd, 2005

      If they’re talkin’, they’re lie’n.

You mentioned Byrd. My mother was an “old time” dem whom I never could talk out of her party.
She lived a very conservative life but refused to believe the dem party had changed for the worse.

But even SHE couldn’t stand Byrd. And she was from WV.

Of course she was educated and could see through him. Why I could never wake her up to the take over of dem party by the hard left I’ll never know. But then again, I have a good friend who is exactly the same. From PA. Both coal areas that are now being hit hard by the “green” mindset.

Mom must be spinning in her grave right at what has happened to the country my dad fought for in WWII. The friend I just want to shake some sense in her head.

it’s completely ok for a democrat/progressive to make a racially related comment and a simple apology will suffice, nothing else is to be said, and the topic must be ignored, forgotten, and dropped.

but if anyone else who might possibly be a non progressive, hires a better qualified person based on merit than a black person, agrees with a conviction of a black person when the evidence is overwhelming, or doesn’t refund a black persons entire combo meal after they’ve eaten the whole meal except the last bite and now wants a refund because there wasn’t any ketchup on the sandwich for a black person, you are a racist and you must be punished and taken down, ruined forever, crucified(in a non judeo christian way).

remember don imus with his accurate yet politically incorrect “nappy headed ho” comment, harry should at least to take a 6 month departure from public eye and ear like don did.

    • jobeth

      Take a breath luna!

Just kidding…we all understand your frustration.

Just another “I mis-spoke” moment for a lib. ” Take no notice”

Remember Biden’s remark about O being clean? Now he’s VP

      But let a conservative say it….Oh boy………..

    • proreason

Gee jobeth, I think luna is holding back bigtime!!!

I find the comment not only rational, but graciously understated.

Don’t get ME going on this topic.

    • jobeth

LOL,. I’m just worried about his BP. We can’t afford to lose a clear thinking voter these days!

Reading the last paragraph just left me breathless. LOL.

Luna…I’m with you all the way though

    • Confucius

      There’s more to it.

When a black Democrat says something like this, they don’t even have to apologize.

    • lunaticcringeradio

my bp is fine jo beth, don’t worry about me.
you should have heard my rants when i had the time to do my online radio show. i really need to fire the studio back up and start doing a live sat night show again. i mean i got 3 more years for the taps to hells septic tank running wide open.
my show was kind of a cross between rush limbagh and opie & anthony. all the conservative facts and foundation, just foul mouthed, disgusting, politically incorrect. it wasn’t for a religious republican, since i’m not that, i’m a jeffersonian conservative.
i loved it when the moonbats would drive through making some comment on how bad conservatism or capitalism was and i’d send them flapping away with their sagging vegetarian pale under arm skin in so much fury. oh it sounded like someone slapping two pork chops together, their bp tipping the edge of a heart attack in outrage after i explain how their progressive liberal values are based on greed, envy, and selfishness. oh you could almost hear their aneurisms swell as i pissed them off. oh i missed those late nights of drinking and bashing progressives and i loved pointing out how many double standards they follow, how hypocritical their values are, and how they can’t live by a set of standards because they lack the intellectual honesty and moral integrity to follow even their own rules they set for themselves(eg AL GORE), and their fragile lil egos and weak self esteems wont allow them to ever find fault with themselves or place blame on anyone that loved to bathe in the bath of pity & sorrow with them so they are never guilty of anything that they do. it’s easy to dispell any progressive liberal argument or point of view when you understand how a progressive liberal “feels” not thinks. their decisions are almost always based on a feeling not a thought rooted from somewhere in the previously mentioned personality flaws & faults listed above. i always wished somehow james carville got word of me and tried to attack me cause i would love to have been the nobody guy that handed him his ass. i have no fear when it comes to a progressive socialist who’s head looks like a rotten crab apple that a crow pecked at.

Republicans respond to democrats/Reid’s weak apology with force:

    from Politico: http://news.yahoo.com/s/politi.....co/31325_1

    GOP claims Lott-Reid double standard

John Bresnahan John Bresnahan – Sun Jan 10, 1:32 pm ET

Top Republicans called for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to step aside Sunday — and accused the Democrats and the media of holding the GOP to a double standard on matters of race.

In an interview with POLITICO, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-Texas) said it would be “entirely appropriate” for the Nevada Democrat to relinquish his leadership post over comments about Barack Obama’s skin color and lack of a “Negro dialect.”

And like Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele and Senate GOP Whip Jon Kyl — both of whom also called for Reid’s resignation Sunday — Cornyn suggested that any Republican who said what Reid said would be under attack from Democrats, leading African-Americans and the media.

Actually, they’d be excoriated, drawn and quartered.

“There’s a big double standard here,” Steele saidduring an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“What’s interesting here, is when Democrats get caught saying racist things, an apology is enough. If that had been [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) saying that about an African-American candidate for president of the president of the United States, trust me, this chairman and the [Democratic National Committee] would be screaming for his head, very much as they were with Trent Lott.

Lott lost his leadership post in 2002 after saying that the country would have been better off if Sen. Strom Thurmond — a segregationist — had been elected president in 1948.

And that remark, you may recall, had the democrats going pitchforks and torches, calling for his head on a pike. And they won.

Reid’s remarks were at least as egregious, if not a great deal more so.

    • proreason

Democrats are quick to defend everything except the security of the country. They are quick to spend our money on everything except national defense.

Kinda makes you wonder about their real agenda, doesn’t it?

  10. joeblough

The heavy handedness of Reid’s crude racial considerations is rather remarkable.

It’s almost surprising that he didn’t refer to Red Hussein as a mulatto or a half-breed.

Yep. A high yaller half-breed n****r like Obama could almost pass in decent white society, the necessary allowances assumed.

    =======

The dems were the party of slavery after all. Still are.

    =======

Why anybody ever thought of Red Hussein as an American black guy defeats my imagination in any case.

The “black”, African side of his family is undoubtedly part Arab, and entirely foreign.

The American side of his family is altogether white.

His early education transpired in the Arab toned madrassas of Indonesia. And his teen years were passed among upscale commie private-school whites in Hawaii.

I dare say that I (white enough to really pass in most places, blue eyes and all) have more in common with really black looking people who grew up in say, Harlem, than Red Hussein ever had or ever could have.

    ==========

All that said, all this black and white business is irrelevant in any case.

Obama’s real color is RED !

And I am not talking about Cherokees or Navajos.

    • GL0120

You’re close to describing TCO’s real color.
Actually he’s orange, you must’ve forgotten to factor in the yellow streak down his spine.

  11. BillK

Big shock, Al Sharpton was just on Fox News saying this wasn’t racist at all, just an “improper observation.”

It’s the usual – when you’re beholden to the Democrats for everything, the Democrats can treat you like a “house n-” and there are no consequences whatsoever.

But as a Republican, call somone a “macaca” and, well, it sounds like a racist comment, so it must be.

    • canary

Obama would consider it racist. His vulnerable old grandmother was afraid to take bus after really big black man took her money. When his surrogate father, mentor, & communist Frank Marshall Davis, said it was right for her to fear considering the hatred the blacks carried around for white, poor Obama felt all alone in the world, because no one was superior enough to see the racism he saw. Old people in NYC have to be careful.

    • Confucius

A spokesman for the NAACP was on Fox News this morning calling Reid’s comments “awkward” but “understandable.”

    This just in . . .

Bob Beckel (D) just said on Fox News that Reid’s comment’s weren’t racist because they were “supportive.”

Dem Op Bob Beckel in Court Sex Mess… Pair attempted to extort political analyst

      The Northern Virginia Journal
      8/30/02
      Lauren Dunn

A former host of CNN’s “Crossfire Sunday” and regular contributor to CBS “This Morning” paid a Fairfax County woman to perform sex acts on him at his Maryland home and was then threatened that the incident would be made public unless he paid $50,000, according to Virginia court records.

Bob Beckel, a political analyst who managed Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign, paid a woman $300 per hour to visit his home on June 27 and 29. …

About 6 p.m. June 27, Beckel was at his Bethesda, Md., home when he found an Internet Web site with a photograph of a woman named “Tiffany,” who was dressed in provocative clothing. …

Beckel called the telephone number listed on the Web page and made arrangements for the woman to come to his house for a $300-an-hour massage, the affidavit states. The woman, who identified herself as Tiffany, arrived at his home and he paid her $600 for two hours.

During the visit, she performed oral sex on him and he revealed to her that he worked for a “major media syndicate.” …

Tiffany saw Beckel again at his home from 3 to 6 p.m. June 29 and received a check for $1,300. She performed oral sex on him and she agreed that she would return to his house July 1, the affidavit states. …

Beckel left town from July 5 to July 11; when he returned, an envelope was on the windshield of his car. The envelope contained a computer-generated letter that stated: “for the last time, you need to drop off the money on Friday July 12, 2002 at exactly 4pm.” …

The letter included demands for $50,000 in cash, all in $100 bills, a drop-off time of 2 p.m. July 7 and directions to the drop-off area on Potomac Street in Washington, the affidavit states. …
