Reid To Kill Filibuster, Hike Taxes, Pass Amnesty

From the Politico:

Harry Reid agenda: Filibuster crackdown, tax increases

By MANU RAJU | November 7, 2012

Sen. Harry Reid embraced his role as a more empowered Senate majority leader Wednesday, calling for a major fiscal deal in the lame duck session while vowing a new push on immigration reform and an overhaul of filibuster rules in the new Congress.

He also promised not to “mess with Social Security” as negotiations begin on fiscal reform.

What kind of fiscal reform can you have when the biggest problem of all is off the table?

Speaking at a packed news conference on Capitol Hill, Reid laid out an ambitious agenda for 2013 after his party’s surprisingly decisive Senate victories and President Barack Obama’s reelection bid, saying the public gave Democrats a new mandate to raise taxes on wealthy families as part of a major year-end fiscal deal

Obama won re-election with only a one or two percent margin. In the history of our country, no President has ever been re-elected with a margin of victory that was smaller than his first election. (Not even Bill Clinton.) Until Obama.

This was not a mandate.

“The president campaigned around the country saying, ‘We know what the problems are with this fiscal problem. We just need some revenue,’” Reid said. “That was the issue. The mandate was look at all the exit polls, look at all the polling, the vast majority of the American people, rich, poor, everybody agrees that the rich — richest of the rich have to help a little bit.” …

This, of course, is a lie. The polls say no such thing. But we all know by now that Harry Reid is a pathological liar. — And that is putting it nicely.

Reid said the burden was on the GOP to cut a deal…

That’s funny. Just last week the National Journal reported: "If Mitt Romney wins the presidency, he will not win cooperation from Senate Democrats, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Friday in his latest and perhaps final shot at a candidate who aides say Reid personally disdains… "Romney’s fantasy that Senate Democrats will work with him to pass his ‘severely conservative’ agenda is laughable."

While Reid said the election called for a new era of cooperation, one of the very first moves of the new Congress will almost certainly infuriate the GOP: Changes to the hallowed filibuster rules…

“I think that the rules have been abused and that we’re going to work to change them,” Reid said. “We’re not going to do away with the filibuster, but we’re going to make the Senate a more meaningful place, we’re going to make it so that we can get things done.”

Once the procedural snafus are resolved, Reid said “very high” on his priority list will be an attempt to pass an immigration overhaul, an issue important to the Latino community that powered Tuesday night’s Democratic wins…

Republicans, he said, would block immigration reform “at their peril.” …

Ah, yes. This is the kind of bi-partisanship the country voted for. Stripping away the power of the minority by taking away the filibuster. And ramming through amnesty. Yes, this was the mandate the voters gave the Democrats.

By the way, we also have this nugget of statesmanship from Mr. Reid, via CNS News:

Harry Reid on Hiking Debt Limit to $18.794T: ‘We’ll Raise It’

By Elizabeth Harrington | November 7, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said on Wednesday that if the $16.394 trillion current legal limit on the federal government’s debt must be raised in the next few months by another $2.4 trillion, “We’ll raise it."

That would set the debt limit at $18.794 trillion.

During a Capitol Hill press conference on Wednesday, CNSNews.com asked: “Senator Reid, the Treasury Department said last week that we will hit the debt ceiling again near the end of the year. Are you prepared—will you support—"

“I think the debt ceiling will come after the first of the year,” Reid said. “But please everyone accept this: They tried it before—they, the Republicans.”

“They tried it before – ‘We’re going to shut down the government, and we’re not going to raise the debt ceiling,’” he said. “If they want to go through that again, fine."

“But we’re not going to be held subject to something that was done as a matter of fact in all previous administrations,” Reid said.

CNSNews.com then asked, “But will you support raising it by another $2.4 trillion?”

“If it has to be raised, we’ll raise it,” he said…

It’s that simple.

By the way, lest we forget, Harry Reid and Barack Obama and Joe Biden all voted against raising the debt limit back in March 2006, when they were trying to defund our soldiers in the field in order to lose the war in Iraq in time for them to win control of Congress.

They are that despicable.

    Mandate? Mandate for what?

The Democrats ran an entirely negative campaign of demonization and vilification of Mitt Romney. How is that a mandate for anything?

The Democrats offered virtually nothing positive, no program, no plan, no vision for the future.

Under the circumstances, they cannot legitimately claim a mandate for anything, except perhaps more “free” contraceptives and abortions.

how does the senate majority blowhole pass a binding budget when the budget is (supposed to be) the job of the House?
