AP: Reid Mangled View On Gitmo Release

From Harry Reid’s news conference yesterday, via CQ Politics:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Holds News Conference

… Questions?

QUESTION: (inaudible)

REID: Change course on what?

QUESTION: On funding the closing of Guantanamo Bay.

REID: Well, the decision to close Guantanamo was a right one.

I agree with President Bush. I agree with John McCain . I agree with Barack Obama. Guantanamo makes us less save.

However, this is neither the time nor the bill to deal with this. Democrats under no circumstances will move forward without a comprehensive, responsible plan from the president. We will never allow terrorists to be released into the United States.

QUESTION: (inaudible)

REID: No, I really don’t think so.

We have — of course, coming in July, there’s going to be a study that will be put forth on detainees — what should be done in that regard. The president knew that was coming.

REID: I think this is a very — the thing that we did is waiting for the plan from the president. He didn’t hold us out to dry at all — hang us out to dry, not at all.

QUESTION: If the United States — if the United States thinks that these people should be held, why shouldn’t they be held in the United States? Why shouldn’t the U.S. take those risks, the attendant risk of holding them, since it’s the one that says they should be held?

REID: I think there’s a general feeling, as I’ve already said, that the American people, and certainly the Senate, overwhelmingly doesn’t want terrorists to be released in the United States. And I think we’re going to stick with that.

QUESTION: What about in imprisoned in the United States?

REID: If you’re…

REID: If people are — if terrorists are released in the United States, part of what we don’t want is them be put in prisons in the United States. We don’t want them around the United States

Hilarious. Dick Cheney does get results.

As do (real, not media driven) polls.

Obviously the Associated Press disapproves and they are going to spank Mr. Reid for this new position:

Sen. Reid botches 3 subjects at news conference

By Laurie Kellman, Associated Press Writer – Wed May 20

WASHINGTON – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid became the latest Democrat to stray into rhetorical trouble Tuesday, botching statements on three subjects in one news conference — including the fragile health of the chamber’s most senior members. The Nevada Democrat reported that one of them, Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., was absent because he was receiving a new round of treatment for his brain cancer. Asked if the cancer was in remission, Reid replied, "As far as I know, it is, yes."

Kennedy’s office refused to confirm Reid’s comments or make any statement in response, the public silence a classic Washington disavowal.

Reid was then asked about Sen. Robert C. Byrd, at 91 the longest-serving senator in history, who was hospitalized over the weekend for an infection. Reid reported that Byrd was to be released from the hospital Tuesday or perhaps later in the week.

Not exactly.

"Senator Byrd is improving," responded his spokesman, Jesse Jacobs. "But his doctors, in consultation with his family, have not yet determined when he will be released."

Reid also mangled his party’s position on the congressional news of the day, that Senate Democrats would join their House counterparts in withholding the money President Barack Obama needs to close the Guantanamo Bay prison until Obama comes up with a plan for relocating its prisoners.

But Reid went further than saying he wanted to see a plan for the money before Congress approves it. "We will never allow terrorists to be released into the United States," he said.

No one, of course, was talking about releasing terrorism suspects among the American populace. Imprisoning them, perhaps, but not releasing them.

"Part of what we don’t want is them be put in prisons in the United States," Reid clarified but digging himself into a bigger hole by departing significantly from some of his colleagues and administration officials. "We don’t want them around the United States."

Did the administration put Democrats in an awkward position, asking for the money before setting out how it would be spent?

"Not at all," said Reid…

How swift and severe is the media’s punishment of any apostasy.

What about the poets and scholars from China? 23 of them or something that they’re thinking about releasing into America because they can’t be sent back to China because of fear of *gulp* human rights abuses. As I understand it the reason they are still there is because the U.S. wants to find another country to take them. If Obama presses the issue and closes Guantanamo we would essentially have no other Democrat approved choice but to release them into the U.S. and pay them welfare.

Another funny tidbit about the Chinese Muslims (Uighurs) in Guantanamo:

After being given access to television, the Guantanamo Uighurs watched a soccer game. When the screen showed a woman with bare arms, they threw the tv on the ground and destroyed it

Yeah, they’re just dying to embrace the American way…

You know, I’m really having to re-think genocide.

And yet the lefties accuse the religious right of being “repressive” of women.

It wouldn’t be the MSM if it were any other way, but they have of course flipped the script. These people can’t simply ‘be imprisoned’ in the U.S. the same way they can be at Guantanamo. They would have to go to trial and be convicted. Then they would have a prison sentence, and at the end of that sentence…bingo…they would have to be released into the U.S. general population. That’s aside from the fact that the good reporter may wish to ‘not talk about’ the Uighurs, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. But as Mr. Cheney, and now apparently Mr. Reid at his own great personal expense have discussed, these problems go away if you leave the prison at Guantanamo open.

You know this is getting interesting – Reid & Pelosi who are sitting in the cat bird’s proverbial seat – are sounding like idiots. And the Dems who are in 2 of 3 (and on the verge of securing the 3rd one) seats of American power – aren’t accomplishing what they wanted. I wonder why? Perhaps they are finding out – most especially in relation to the GWOT, Gitmo and now taxes – that it is indeed WE THE PEOPLE who are the real power in America.

Power to the People. Vote ’em all out in 2010 and 2012 – and let’s set up Term Limits, no lifetime retirement, pay caps and repeal the 16th Amendment – and give the Power back to the rightful owners of it – the citizens of this country.

Man – Pelosi and Reid must be polling in the single digits and worried sick over it – wonder if it is translating into no $$$$$$$$$$$$$ in their ‘re-election’ coffers?!?

Comeon – you fiberals can’t help yourself – put into the House & Senate – the Edward Kennedy Universal Healthcare Free for All Most Especially Illegal Undocumented Aliens Bill – with of course the requisite ‘honorary’ sponsorship by Her Royal Clinton – and watch how quickly We The People – rise and and say No in a single voice.

This is just the rear-guard action by the TMCC when they realized that:

    1. Americans won’t tolerate releasing terrorists in our country, and
    2. Although this issue titillates the more committed nuts, it doesn’t advance the core agenda of destroying the republic.

So rather than having The Moron pull another magic mirror show where the lie yesterday becomes the truth today, they decided to outsource the scat dance to Reaper Reid.

  6. David says:

What concerns me is the Democrat tendency to say the opposite of what they mean. (Obama’s “fiscal responsibility” and “tax cuts” we have to pay taxes on are a couple of examples) Perhaps they really are planning on straight up releasing them. My guess is that they will just use the no funding stunt to wait until the media has decided this isn’t big news anymore and do what they planned along. When anyone calls the Dems on it they will just point to the fact that it is all “old news”.
What I find disconcerting about the whole debacle is that a sizable chunk of these Democrat’s supporters believe Pres. Bush planned 9-11. With that view there can be no reason to hold any terrorists.

“REID: Well, the decision to close Guantanamo was a right one…Guantanamo makes us less safe. ”

Ok Reid, we’ll just kill them all on the battlefield next time. No mess, no fuss. And no whine from human rights lawyers who make sure inmates receive fancy prosthetic legs before returning to the jihad (to mention just one example).

Best of all, no taxpayer money to fund copies of the Koran or arrows facing Mecca.

Beauty of Reason, It was during a game commercial when a bare-armed woman was brushing her teeth. And the guards say any little thing turns them into a riot. Many are in their own cells, and just sliding a plate of food through the slot is dangerous. The more behaved prisoners are in dorm rooms rather then cells. Many don’t want to be released. Many prisoners admit they will kill for allah if released.
David, I agree. The Democrats are getting fleas from laying down with Obombies.

AP should know about medical privacy regs. Politicans don’t want voters knowing if they are insane, socialpaths, deranged, dying, and Ted Kennedy’s brain could be a blob by now, yet alone the effect of poison from chemo. Turns out JFK was on major prescription drugs for pain and to stay awake. Clinton didn’t want those emergency records of
nose bleeds from his sniffing problem while serving Arkansas.

Senate rebukes Obama, blocks Guantanamo shutdown
By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – In a rare, bipartisan defeat for President Barack Obama, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to keep the prison at Guantanamo Bay open for the foreseeable future…
Democrats lined up with Republicans in the 90-6 vote …..

It will be next month at the earliest before Congress completes work on the legislation, giving the White House time pursue a compromise that would allow the president to fulfill his pledge.

But Obama’s maneuvering room was further constrained during the day when FBI Director Robert Mueller told a congressional panel that he had concerns about bringing Guantanamo Bay detainees to prisons in the United States. Mueller, who was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2001 and is serving a 10-year fixed term in office.

Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, chairman of the Appropriations Committee, favors closing Guantanamo…,

All six opponents of the proposal were Democrats, including Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Carl Levin of Michigan, and Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island…

The Republican leader also won approval for a separate terror-related provision later in the day. On a vote of 92-3, the Senate agreed to require the administration, before releasing any detainee, to inform Congress of the likelihood that he would return to terrorism. It also would report on any effort al-Qaida may be making to recruit detainees once they’re released from U.S. custody.

Prodded by Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., to agree that Guantanamo detainees could be kept safely in maximum security prisoners in the United States,…

Mueller declined. He noted that in some instances gang leaders have run their gangs from inside prisons.

.., Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, the second-in-command among Democrats, pointed out that no one has ever escaped from a federal “supermax” prison and that 347 convicted terrorists are among those held in them.

…” said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas. “Guantanamo Bay was never meant to be an Ellis Island.”

Associated Press writers Devlin Barrett, Nedra Pickler and Andrew Taylor

    • canary says:

Don’t forget the recent and ongoing team Obama attempts to prosecute FBI Robert Mueller, to get around that fixed 10 year fixed position he’s holding.

    • JohnMG says:

What we are witnessing is a massive C(over0 Y(our) A(ss) move by senate democrats. Election’s a’comin’ real soon, and none of these moral prigs wants to have to defend a vote in favor of such lunacy as releasing this islamic scourge on the voting public. Once safely ensconced for another term, the dems will revert to their typical crapweasel form. You can take that to the bank!
